What laundry products make everything smell nice?

I'm fed up of the boring jobs and looking to at least feel like doing laundry is worth it. I've seen adverts for tallow and ash which is a new company and claim to smell amazing. But it's not cheap - is it worth it?
What do you use that keeps your washing smelling lovely?

I think you have to change the scent every time you buy a new box as well or you get used to it.

puffylovett · 16/07/2023 09:17

No fabric conditioner, I use ecoleaf from our local refill store. It smells like fresh air, like cucumbers especially when it’s on the line. Love it.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 16/07/2023 09:20

I don't use pods or liquids in my washing machine. Daz powder, no fabric softener (animal fat 🤢) dry on the line. My washing smells really clean and fresh, but not really 'of' anything. I wear perfume, I don't want the smell of fabric conditioner competing with it 😂

Washing machine is cleaned regularly.
I'm going to go shopping and see which of these are on offer. Thanks!

The bold gel I recommend is always on great offer in b&m, much cheaper than supermarket

One of the best replies to this question that I’ve seen on mumsnet said something like

“why would I want to smell like Lenor when I can smell like Chanel”

and that says it all, to me!

Ciri · 16/07/2023 09:42

It really is all about cleaning your washing machine regularly and taking the washing out as soon as it’s finished cleaning.

Tiredjoanna · 16/07/2023 09:46

Absolutely true ciri, hate the stagnant water smell if it left for a bit

This. I spend a fortune on nice perfumes and that’s what I want to smell of!
So until Dior start making fabric conditioner I’m sticking to plain old fairy washing powder and hanging on the line/airer.

Cornettoninja · 16/07/2023 09:51

I don’t do lenor, I don’t know if it’s the water around here but it makes my machine stink!

My favourites are the Bold lavender and chamomile powder and yellow comfort but I do like to experiment. Asda tropical washing powder is surprisingly nice and a good CoL alternative but I don’t rate the M&S stuff. I made a special trip for that and was disappointed!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 16/07/2023 10:52

Ours always smells fine, and for some years now I’ve used only powder (half as much as I once used to use) in the drum, and soda crystals in the drawer.

If your washing needs artificial scents to smell nice, try doing a really hot empty wash with just soda crystals - conditioner and pods gum up the machine with gunge. When I did this (once advised on MN by Piglet John) I was appalled at the amount of dirty grey foam that appeared - and there was still some when I repeated it.

liveforsummer · 16/07/2023 11:01

Fairy pods are amazing but unfortunately leave grey marks on my clothing. Found just be my machine. I use the Aldi blue liquid instead which is a very close second

bonfirebash · 16/07/2023 11:48

NCTDN · 16/07/2023 08:31

@bonfirebash are tallow and ash worth the money?
Are unstoppables fabric conditioners?

They're still doing samples I think so maybe try those? I guess it depends if you like the scents or not!
Unstoppables are scent boosters

Bonmish · 16/07/2023 12:16

Fairy pods, fabric conditioner and fairy scent boosters. LUSH

Tighginn · 16/07/2023 12:21

My favourite is Oud but each scent tells you what perfume it is similar too

KirstenBlest · 16/07/2023 12:37

I can't stand the smell of fabric conditioner or the slimy feel it leaves on clothes

twilightcafe · 16/07/2023 12:45

That's nice, dear.

MaryJean87 · 16/07/2023 12:59

The best fabric conditioner I've used that has the most fragrance is a Spanish one, I can't think what it's called but it's in a pink bottle, " Talbot rosa" fragrance with pink baby booties on the front. I've only ever seen it in corner shops or Amazon but it smells gorgeous.

Talco not talbot

KirstenBlest · 16/07/2023 13:15

@twilightcafe , if you buy something preloved, the conditioner doesn't wash out.

NCTDN · 16/07/2023 15:28

@Baxdream thank you!
I've bought unstoppables today as they are on offer in Tesco.

Smol fabric softener. It doesn't have animal fats and smells clean but not really identifiably of anything. The detergent is fine but the fabric softener is amazing. You can get a free trial of most of the things (not the softener tho!). It's a subscription but easy to cancel. I agree a really hot wash every couple of months does the machine a lot of good.

ferretface · 18/07/2023 10:30

I do really like Tallow and Ash for something a bit different, got a referral code for 10% off if anyone wants one. They are quite different to other laundry detergents, distinctly perfume smelling. Oud is my favourite. I don't usually use fabric conditioner but have been quite pleased with it, it is much runnier than typical fabric conditioners and doesn't seem to leave that slick feeling on fabric.

I also like Smol detergent pods (fresh clean scent) and for gym wash on technical fabrics you can't beat Gymspin. It has a strange green herbal smell which some people may not like but it does kill any lingering odour. Better than the Dettol wash which a lot of people like.

@Pushpull I haven't tried the Smol fabric conditioner but I do like the pods - will have to try!
