What is Flop?

Flop off Bing.

How is he funded?
What led him to this line of work?
Why is he so very, very relaxed?

And what was in Mark Rylance’s mind when he did the voiceover? Has he ever spoken about it?

I always thought flop was / is bings cuddly toy who came to life. No idea where the parents are - you never see any adults it gives me the heebie jeebies if I think about it too long.

The same goes for paw patrol where is ryders parents?!

… and with Paw Patrol - who is funding them?

Paget has the shop. Molly is a doctor (kerching). But who is funding Amma and Flop?

We don't watch Bing because I don't like the child-rabbit being followed around by a hideous shadow-land creature.

I love the episode where Flop is trying to make coffee but Bing keeps messing stuff up so he's constantly interrupted and then finally goes to make it once Bing's stopped fucking about, then he spills it all over the floor and STILL doesn't lose his shit!
Amma is fab. She has the best lines too: "oh, that's a definite code brown!" "What's all this shouty hooha?" and the classic "let's get pegging!"

Amma does have the best lines. Without Sula’s common sense and Amma’s sense of humour, it wouldn’t be bearable.

I like that episode, too. Because there isn’t a meltdown in it. The story has a different shape (it starts and ends with Flop’s coffee).

I think in the original story books, Flop is Bing’s toy bunny whom he imagines to be real, and Bing’s parents are very much in the background and present but not really heavily featured.

This then got a bit lost in translation when making the TV show with the result of Flop being Bing’s main and only carer.

I agree with PP that it just creates too many unanswered questions! Why are the adults smaller? Where are the parents? Why is everything too big for Flop and the other caters? I know it’s a kids show but it’s frustrating how much it makes no sense!

😮

it is based on an original work of literature???!!

There’s a text?

I did! I sent a question in about Flop and sadly they didn't publish it! Wonder why.....

We need a strategy next time… Get organised! Co-ordinate!

Can we petition Mumsnet to get him in? Or can he just do an AMA?

I have laughed out loud at this thread multiple times and almost woken a sleeping baby (a mumsnet rite of passage I believe)

As my DH says "being insufferable - it's a Bing thing" 😂

Why does Pando think it ok to take his shorts off willy-nilly?

I can confirm this is representative of life with a three year old boy.

Fruttidelbosco · 19/06/2023 17:05

I do respect how they include the pants shedding in the opening credits

DH tells me that he thinks that there is an episode where Flop raises his voice. Something about a ball. I haven’t encountered it, though.

I have cried reading this thread 😂😂😂 I can't stand Bing! Whiney, moany, blames everything and everyone else, sulks... bring me Peppa any day!

Angelik · 19/06/2023 20:01

I've never watched Bing, but this thread has made me laugh. What wonderful, witty women you all are!

LolaSmiles · 19/06/2023 20:57

muuummypig
I can't stand the whiny rabbit, but Peppa can also get in the bin.
😂

ShatParp · 19/06/2023 21:19

@Fruttidelbosco oh yeah!! We've had several of the books out of the library. They're pretty awful! "Something for Daddy" features a scary psychedelic Bing!

Getthemofftheirhighhorses · 19/06/2023 21:24

I always thought he was a deformed ant. 🐜

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 19/06/2023 22:04

Peppa can piss off too. She's a nasty little oink, always calling her dad fat and no one pulls her up on it. Another one that gets her own way. George is whiny fuck too.

I'll take Bluey, Duggee and Puffin Rock. Love Puffin Rock. Watched it last night whilst 3 month DD wouldn't sleep.

MsJuniper · 19/06/2023 22:05

I was also disappointed at the lack of Flop questions in this.

Why does Pando think it ok to take his shorts off willy-nilly?

I got my grandson to shout at the tv every time "Pando, keep your shorts on! And green thing, stop enabling him!" (Drives me mad that the green thing picks Pando's shorts up, folds them nicely and carries them over their arm)
Anyway, few weeks later my grandson had done something and my daughter was telling him not to do it again but she would sort it out this time. With a serious face, he told her she was enabling him! Oh I laughed!

Fruttidelbosco · 20/06/2023 05:57

@angelicaelizapeggy I’ve slept on it and now understand what you are saying.

Not a primary carer.

A small child imagining his soft toy coming to life and existing entirely in service to the child, including as an emotional regulator.

I did wonder if the Observer chose not to give Mark my Flop question, rather than him not wanting to answer it! They probably had loads of questions sent in, but too many published questions from celebrities, as usual.

Fruttidelbosco · 20/06/2023 15:15

We clearly need to recruit a celebrity to the cause!
