What is Flop?

Flop off Bing.

How is he funded?
What led him to this line of work?
Why is he so very, very relaxed?

And what was in Mark Rylance’s mind when he did the voiceover? Has he ever spoken about it?

He's a massive enabler

Handsnotwands · 18/06/2023 17:26

My DS thinks he’s a spoon 🤷🏼‍♀️

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 18/06/2023 17:30

I agree with pp. He's a massive enabler who lets that dick rabbit get whatever he wants if he whines enough. I feel sorry for other kids. They seem to have to let Bing get what he wants. I never hear the word no in that show.

I finally got rid of Bing now DD is 8. DD2 is 3 months and it'll come back 😥

LolaSmiles · 18/06/2023 17:31

I hoped this would be a Bing thread!

Flop is there to make parents feel rubbish about the fact that whilst Flop is pateonisingly zen about everything, real parents are 3 seconds away from saying "yesterday's carrot sandwich has been eaten, no i can't get it back, put your shoes on and get in the bloody car!"

SleepingStandingUp · 18/06/2023 17:32

Eldest lvoed it but the 3 yos are all about big kid telly so there's no flop in my life. I miss his calm voice.

This is what has happened to me. I used to quite like it

(apart from when Pagit pushed Pando on the swing into Bing and then says, ‘why did you run into the swing, Bing?’)

but this time round, having been through a pandemic, I think there is something wrong with Flop. A screw loose. Too much cannabis in his twenties.

And why does the bus driver become emotionally distraught when the electric motor breaks?

These actors do have a choice about how to read their lines.

I think I can only stand Sula and her carer. I don't think Flop could cope if Bing kicked off. It's not like he can lift him up if he's rolling on the floor screaming. And how come everything in the house isn't Flop sized? Why is the house massive compared to the beanbag adults?

Infusionist · 17/06/2023 12:32

Is there a tragic prequel where Bing’s parents ended up in rabbit pie, leading to his placement with Flop?

Watership Down?

BingandSulaandFlop · 18/06/2023 21:28

As you might guess from my username, I might have been forced to watch this once or twice (an hour....for the last 3 years). It's got to the point where DH and I discuss how we've handled toddler dramas on a scale of "1 to Flop".

What I can't get my head around is:

  • why are all the houses unsuitable for everyone in that world?
  • how come Coco has a sibling?Does she remember her parents?
  • how do Flop and Amma get Charlie out of the pushchair?
  • when Bing grows up does he become a sack too or does someone just shoot him for whining too much?

Oh and Paget is Cynthia from Call the Midwife for anyone who is interested!

ISaySteadyOn · 18/06/2023 21:30

I didn't know that. That explains why she always sounded so familiar! Thanks.

catsnore · 18/06/2023 21:51

We came to the conclusion he was a knitted ant?!?! The other 'adults' don't seem to be knitted tho, Amma seems to be made of suede and Paget is a pool noodle 😂

We have so many questions......

Why does he have to stand on a stool to get to the sink/oven/worktop? The hoover is bigger than him! And there is no way his house could be so neat when he lets Bing keep all the broken toys and random balloons in the bloody bye bye box.

Is Flop really shagging Amma or Paget but they have to pretend in front of the children? Why does no-one have two parents or carers? Why doesn't Coco go to school?

ThreeRingCircus · 18/06/2023 22:26

I saw Flop once described as a "sentient butternut squash" so that's the theory I now stick with as it makes as much sense as any other.

Thecat19342 · 18/06/2023 22:49

I always thought flop was / is bings cuddly toy who came to life. No idea where the parents are - you never see any adults it gives me the heebie jeebies if I think about it too long.

The same goes for paw patrol where is ryders parents?!

ShatParp · 18/06/2023 23:05

I love the episode where Flop is trying to make coffee but Bing keeps messing stuff up so he's constantly interrupted and then finally goes to make it once Bing's stopped fucking about, then he spills it all over the floor and STILL doesn't lose his shit!
Amma is fab. She has the best lines too: "oh, that's a definite code brown!" "What's all this shouty hooha?" and the classic "let's get pegging!"

Elbbob · 18/06/2023 23:11

I am sorry to say but Flop has turned to the dark side in recent years....

What is Flop?
angelicaelizapeggy · 19/06/2023 01:12

I think in the original story books, Flop is Bing’s toy bunny whom he imagines to be real, and Bing’s parents are very much in the background and present but not really heavily featured.

This then got a bit lost in translation when making the TV show with the result of Flop being Bing’s main and only carer.

I agree with PP that it just creates too many unanswered questions! Why are the adults smaller? Where are the parents? Why is everything too big for Flop and the other caters? I know it’s a kids show but it’s frustrating how much it makes no sense!

I’m so lame that I actually looked this up a few weeks ago - he’s meant to represent a toddlers self-centred view of the world or something, which explains why all the adults are small and featureless.

What a completely random explanation! And if that's true, how is the toddlers representation so wise/patronising/weirdly calm?

That's kind of the conclusion I'd come to. I think Flop is a knitted bunny, and most of the adults are a kind of rudimentary version of their young charges. I think it's because the children are supposed to be the main characters, so it creates a clear hierarchy where you can see that the adults are the supporting characters - literally in terms of supporting the children, as well as in the sense of being less important characters. If they were physically bigger and as detailed as the children then I think it would take more focus away from them. That's my theory anyway having spent way too much time watching and thinking about this!

Also YES to the over emotional bus driver! Why is she so devastated when the bus breaks down?!

Can I also say how much I hate the swings episode? Why does everyone just let Pando be a little shit? Why is the lesson "don't run in front of the swings" when it should be "don't be friends with a little brat who doesn't play fairly and winds you up on purpose"?

Clawdy · 19/06/2023 08:17

I did! I sent a question in about Flop and sadly they didn't publish it! Wonder why.....

Physically it means I think. Kids are so egocentric that the adults around them are literally small but players in the stage show of their life.

However, how he keeps calm is clearly drug related.

Well done for trying!
Im guessing Mark chose not to answer (or they didn’t like his answer 🤷🏼‍♀️)

OneAndDon3 · 19/06/2023 10:42

The only thing that I'm sure of is that Flop is mainlining valium. Parenting Bing? It's a Flop on valium thing.

babybumbum · 19/06/2023 10:44

Bing is the most irritating children's character I have ever witnessed.

JollyGood777 · 19/06/2023 10:45

Why does Pando think it ok to take his shorts off willy-nilly?
