Is, and I am parking to one side whether you like Trump or not, ....is how can you possibly think someone, anyone forget who it is, can leave stolen top secret US government papers all over a golf club, with potential enormous consequences for your country and still, AND STILL, think that person is qualified to have another go at the presidency.

Just on this alone.

Because many of these voters will consider the alternate Republican candidates problematic in their own way. DeSantis, Trump’s nearest opponent, is hugely divisive, and people who consistently vote along party lines and on particular issues are never going to simply switch to voting Democrat because they don’t hugely like the available Republican options.

Also, just as we’ve seen in the UK, there are some people who actually quite like and identify with a loveable buffoon. “We’ve all fucked up at work, right? Cut the man some slack.” Just as in any other country, not everybody in the US is hugely politically literate or engaged and there are plenty of people who don't necessarily see federal politics as having much to do with their day to day lives so they vote for the LOLs

Biden got a free pass with the same type of documents that were found in his house. The excuses made for Biden cock ups are ridiculous.

Yadnbu. The whole trump support base is mind boggling on a whole different scale. Its not on democrat v republican lines, it's not on republican v republican lines. The people who support trump genuinely believe that this is a huge conspiracy against him, and anyone who disagrees is anti trump, therefore anti freedom, anti gun, anti everything else they hold dear. It is, quite frankly terrifying. :(

But there are many people who refuse to be wrong.

It’s more important to be perceived as ‘not wrong’ about something they threw their heart and soul behind, than to be thought of as critical thinkers, evolving their opinion as more information comes to hand.

I guess it’s the same principle behind ‘love is blind’. When someone’s in love, they will not be persuaded to see and respond to (often profound / fatal) flaws in their object.

Nothing anyone says can persuade them. They might come around to rational thinking in their own time - but they will never be persuaded by a third party telling them they’re wrong.

This is what I am baffled by. It just doesn't make sense. You can't run "the free world" by baying mobs. You need a functional legal system. Yet Trump flouts this openly, encourages baying mobs. It's madness.

Barack Obama says in his memoir that there was this visceral reaction to a black family in the White House that created the environment in which a person like Trump could prevail. And then Trump whipped up his fans to a place where the fandom could over-ride rational thought.

You only need to read the Royal Family threads on here to see how hero-worship or it’s converse (hatred of the non-hero), results in people with this weird capacity to twist any event to confirm their existing viewpoint and to excuse or disbelieve any information that contradicts it.

Prior to Trumps election we had a relative visit from the US with his American wife, I'd met his wife previously but only knew her on a social level until they stayed about six weeks with us. She was (and still is) a huge Trump fan, when discussing the election with her she was insisting if Trump was elected it would be awesome for Europe, I asked why and her answer just amazed me, she said that Trumps relationship with Benjamin Netanyahu would benefit all of Europe not just France, puzzled I asked why she'd say not just France, turned out she believed Netanyahu was the President of France!!! This lady was in her mid sixties and in her earlier years had been a newsreader for a local tv station, something she dropped in to a lot of conversations as a reference to her intelligence and experience. I told her who Netanyahu actually was but she still insisted that his relationship with Trump would benefit even Ireland!! That was the longest six weeks of my life I think.

What US military secrets did a country ask for and get? I know he's tweeted a couple of things to the world but I didnt know countries like Russia (? maybe) were actually were asking for military information and it was just being handed over. That's beyond shocking! Which were these countries?
