Just that. How many beans make five? I was taught two answers to the question. I wondered if anyone else had other answers or whether it's not even asked nowadays.

My grandad always told me it was a bean, a bean & a half, two beans and half a bean.

Thank you so much for reminding me about this, it was a staple of every time we visited. Along with being asked "What do you think of the show so far?"

Is this an up north thing?

My grandad grew up in rural Essex before WW1

My grandad always told me it was a bean, a bean & a half, two beans and half a bean

Noooo, that doesn’t scan or rhyme in my head! 😂

Two beans, a bean, a bean and a half and half a bean.

I had no idea that that wasn't the only answer.

@rightioly Only if you count my North London grandad who taught me this. 😀

Two beans and a bean, a bean and a half and half a bean.

Yes!!!! Exactly this answer!! I can’t believe everyone has heard of this I thought my Dad had made it up!

WildFlowerBees · 10/06/2023 14:46

I asked my 78 year old dad earlier, immediately he sang 'A bean 2 beans half a bean and a bean and a half' 🤯

CeeceeBloomingdale · 10/06/2023 14:53

Two beans, a bean and a half, half a bean and a bean.

Definitely two beans, half a bean, bean and a half and bean.

Well, yes. One of my father's answers was

"Two beans, half a bean, a bean and a half and a bean." There was a rhythm about the way he said it.

His other answer was "Two in each hand and one in yer weskit pocket." (your waistcoat).

I didn't realise that this had run to 5 pages. It's nice to know that other people had heard it. It's just a gentle bit of fun, which I suppose will die out.
