Just that. How many beans make five? I was taught two answers to the question. I wondered if anyone else had other answers or whether it's not even asked nowadays.

OP posts:

A bean, two beans, a bean and a half and half a bean.
I honestly thought this was just my dad whittering. Where does it come from?

RebulahConundrum · 09/06/2023 14:42

Two sticks of water

Amandasummers · 09/06/2023 14:43

I feel like I've just opened a thread into a different universe!

caringcarer · 09/06/2023 14:50

Never heard of it and I'm ancient.

ReginaPerrin · 09/06/2023 14:53

Bean, bean, half a bean, two beans and half.

Clarabellawilliamson · 09/06/2023 14:55

Two beans, one bean, one and a half and half a bean!

Looks like we are in the minority with this configuration though....

TeaStory · 09/06/2023 14:57

I thought this was a Blackadder reference so I’m going to say “some beans” and “four, plus that one”.

orangeflags · 09/06/2023 14:59

Aw love this. My dad used to say it too Smile

A bean, a bean, a bean and a half, half a bean and a bean.

This is my one! I have it in my mind as a song. "How many beans make five? How many beans make five? A bean, a bean, a bean and a half, half a bean and a bean."

EamonsPalliativeCareTracksuit · 09/06/2023 15:02

Some beans and then some more beans.

A bean, a bean, a bean and a half, half a bean and a bean.

This is the one! My Grandpapa taught me.

MarinatemysoulinSprite · 09/06/2023 15:46

OP you are totally unreasonable to be boasting about having 5 beans. Some people have no beans. Have you not heard about the COL crisis?

This is a blatant stealth boast.

TeenDivided · 09/06/2023 15:50

2 beans, a bean, a bean and a half, and half a bean.

WakeMeUpWhenGoodOmensIsBack · 09/06/2023 15:53

Am I the only person in England who'd answer "two in each hand and one in your mouth?" I don't even know why.

LongTermLurker · 09/06/2023 15:53

Whoa hold on there. It's two beans, a bean and a half, half a bean and a bean.

WildFlowerBees · 09/06/2023 16:02

What is this?! How do 5 whole beans not make 5 beans?

WarmSausageTea · 09/06/2023 16:05

LongTermLurker · 09/06/2023 15:53

Whoa hold on there. It's two beans, a bean and a half, half a bean and a bean.

it is!

DappledThings · 09/06/2023 16:08

A bean, a bean a half-bean, a half bean, a bean, a bean

Or

A bean and a half, a bean and half, half a bean, a bean and a half.

I use both.

StarchySturgess1 · 09/06/2023 16:12

Depends if you're Baldrick or not.

I thought this was a Blackadder reference so I’m going to say “some beans” and “four, plus that one”.

It took too long to find someone else!

I have never heard this at all!
What does it mean and where is it from?

Neither have I!

LongTermLurker · 09/06/2023 15:53

Whoa hold on there. It's two beans, a bean and a half, half a bean and a bean.

Definitely this version!

JamDodger · 09/06/2023 16:18

I’ve actually clicked on this to say that you shouldn’t really use beans as your 5-a-day because they should be veg and fruit. 😂

It was always a response to me asking too many questions or a way of saying that you know what's what and won't be fooled. Always said by adults in the 60s, I don't recall ever saying it myself.

Also: How long is a piece of string?

How long is a piece of string? Twice the distance from the middle to the end!

Some beans and then some more beans.

You bet me to it! Advanced mathematics by Baldrick.
