Alternative to crisps

georgetheblob · 23/05/2023 21:31

I've fallen into a terrible habit of eating packets of crisps of an evening when dd has gone to bed (single, exhausted, overworked, under paid, middle aged - please don't judge me!) but I've finally decided to sort my life out and I am looking for suggestions for something else that I can snack on in the evening that isn't going to add to the ever expanding tummy...

Any suggestions?

Roasted chickpeas? High in protein and fibre.

I second roasted chickpeas but I'd add lots of spices and chilli flakes too.

What's a posh apple?

SirenSays · 23/05/2023 21:57

Popcorn 🍿

Notfeelinglikemyselftoday · 23/05/2023 21:57

If you want salt, try salted seaweed.

Diversion · 23/05/2023 21:58

Wasabi peas from Aldi, they are quite strong but the crunch is like crisps and I cant eat so many. Someone once recommended that I snack on cornflakes as an alternative to crisps, the idea did not appeal at all.

When I want to eat crisps I go for a bowl of dry Special K. 4.5 syns for 25g. It's not the saltiness of crisps I miss, it's the crunchiness. This gives me the crunch I miss and after 25g I'm bored and have eaten enough. 😁

I wondered this as well. Maybe Pink Lady?

ittakes2 · 23/05/2023 22:02

how about veggie crisps

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 23/05/2023 22:04

Popcorn (do it yourself on the hob, it's great once you get the knack and very satisfying if cyou use a glass lid to watch.
Kale chips (done in oven or air fryer)
Actual real seaweed not the Spring greens kind, I love that but it's very high in fat.

Olives.

Tapenade (olive dip)

Selection of dips with veg sticks

I'm a salt fiend too!!!

Someone once suggested trying a craft hobby that used both your hands - she suggested cross stitch but you could try something else.

It is a bit of a pavlovian response - I eat a bag of crisps as soon as DH walks out the door 😋so a change in routine might help.

I eat crisps, dh leaving is also a trigger, as is the tv going on….anything really. I’m married, and like my job. I’m trying to put crisps in my head in the category of a can of fizzzy pop. I never drink fizzy pop, think it’s just not nice. So maybe try and equate them with something bad for you you don’t like?

im also trying to go for a walk every evening, that helps.

cravng salt can be a sign of high blood pressure.

Neverknowinglysensible · 23/05/2023 22:06

I second home made popcorn. Takes moments to make and, with a little bit of salted butter shaken into it, stops most of the crisp cravings. I am a 3-4 packs a day crisp addict but, with the help of popcorn, am starting to see that there is life after Walkers. please don’t tempt me with Tyrell’s Salt and Vinegar though.

whiteroseredrose · 23/05/2023 22:07

Celery sticks sprinkled with sale - savoury and crunchy. Best served with chilled white wine.

ThatFraggle · 23/05/2023 22:07

Honestly, the answer is to get used to eating less. The habit of snacking between meals is the downfall of many figures. If you eat slowly, and get plenty of protein with your meals and bulk them up with veg, you will not actually feel hungry.

And, I know it sounds silly but people often mistake hunger for thirst, so the first thing you should do when you feel peckish is have a glass of water. Often the craving goes away after that.

Hearti · 23/05/2023 22:08

salted roasted pumpkin seeds

LazyLeopard · 23/05/2023 22:08

I am a crisp MACHINE. However, chickpeas, with spices and a shit load of salt in the airfryer are 👌🏼

georgetheblob · 23/05/2023 22:15

Thanks for all the suggestions!

Thing is, I am not even hungry, I just literally sit and eat them. Like it's become part of my routine!!! 🤦‍♀️

Can you just stop buying them? And what about herbal teas try and fill up on them in the evenings.

Second this, they are great. Also kale chips made in oven are easy and amazing. Massage olive oil into kale, sprinkle, with plenty salt and hot oven for 5ish mins till crispy 😋

IamSlave · 23/05/2023 22:24

Great tips.

I love olives, manxhego cheese and ham if I have it. Unfortunately it's a kittle faff to make so I often have crisps.

I'm not single.

I'm under paid. Over weight.

msssm · 23/05/2023 22:25

I love crisps because of the texture and crunch as much as the flavour.

This might sound odd but I've discovered I get the same satisfaction from a bag of chopped iceberg lettuce. Same crunch and crispy texture!

IamSlave · 23/05/2023 22:25

Please be careful of what these chick pea things. Once I thought I was being uber sensible rating them and I suffered horrendous stabbing pains on my left side for hours.

IamSlave · 23/05/2023 22:26

@msssm have you noticed weight loss and feeling better??

MadameMayberry · 23/05/2023 22:28

Chopped carrots with lemon and salt are very tasty.

IamSlave · 23/05/2023 22:28

Op I'm not remotely peckish either even going for the crisps.

Can you get to an aldi and get little tapas snacks?

Cut back Ln something earlier and make up some kittle delicious delicacy? With something healthy like an apple but with seranco ham. Aldi serano ham..... 👌

msssm · 23/05/2023 22:29

@IamSlave no because I've not found a replacement for cake or chocolate 😂
