What date is 30 days from April 17th? Argos related...

Argos state that "you have 30 days from the date of collection or from the date of delivery to return your item". I collected my order on April 17th and thought I had until yesterday, May 17th, to return it (unopened and nothing wrong with it), but the guy who scanned my receipt said I was outside the returns window.

I figured there had just been a mistake and I would go back tomorrow when a manager was around to sort it out. But then I came across this post online, from someone with the same issue, which suggests that Argos see the 17th April as day one of the returns window, 18th April as day two etc. So 30 days from 17th April would actually be the 16th of May: https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/6393141/clarity-needed-over-argos-30-day-return-policy/p1

So can I do a poll please. If you collect an item on April 17th and have 30 days from that date to return it, what's the latest you think you can return that item?

Hi, yesterday (7th October) my son was trying to arrange collection of an item under Argos's 30 day return policy.

It'll be the 13th / 14th, depending on whether you count the 17th as the first day.

You can count the days off on a calendar and see.

It can’t be the 13th/14th! It has to be either the 16th (according to Argos) or 17th (according to me).

It should be 17th but I'd not risk it and leave it till then if that makes sense.

I always start counting dates by saying,

’30th to the 1st…2, 3, 4…etc’

So it’s the 16th. Sorry, OP.

Day one would be the day you take possession of the item (either collected or delivered) so I'd agree with Argos.

Although the return window is 30 days, I wouldn't wait until the last day.

On the one hand the first possible day to return is the day you bought it, so day one.

On the other hand if you bought it on Monday and they said you have one day in which to decide to return it then you clearly have until Tuesday. If you continue that on it takes you to the 17th.

I feel like the second makes more sense but it's not obvious!

The thing is I'm constantly leaving things until the last minute, and there's been dozens of times I've left it until (what I counted as) day 28 of 28, or day 30 of 30, to return clothes and I've never once had a problem or been told I'm too late.

So I think most shops do calculate it my way. I'll be more careful in future though.

If I bought something on the 1st of the month with a 28 day return policy I would return it by the 28th. The 28th being my last day to attempt a return. I think you need to stop leaving things until the last minute, if you know you don't want it then return it ASAP.

We'll, sounds like you've been lucky so far but Argos are, rightly, not playing ball for you this time.

Perhaps don't leave things till the last minute next time.

I think it should be 17th.

If it was "one day from the day of purchase", it would be 18th April, so 17th April is day 0 in my mind, not day 1.

However, I would not risk it personally and would take it back by 16th to be on the safe side.

I agree with you OP, but I can see why they could make the argument for the 16th (because you could have returned it on 16th April so that is day 1). So while I would tend to do it your way, I don't think their way is completely unreasonable either.

It's all good, I was just asking out of curiosity really, as I thought everyone calculated it my way. The things I got (two jumpers) are very nice and fit me, I just thought I'd be good and return them as I've got so many clothes. But it's no big deal if I have to keep them!

Ah, 14th / 15th - I should have taken my own advice about a calendar... I'm assuming 4 weeks, not 30 or 31 days.

@Tlolljs Argos have sold clothes for years. It's the TU stuff these days as they are linked with Sainsbury's.

It's the 16th. I use to sell to 7 days tickets and always had this discussion with customers. They never use to count the day they bought it for some reason.
