Ever dyed your hair an unnatural colour?

I want to go blue but I’m not sure I have the guts

Blue is really difficult to get out, and it fades to a horrible green.

I’ve been blue, purple, candy floss pink, hot pink, and green so I’d still say go for it. But be prepared to have to strip it out, and cover with a dark.

hexsnidgett · 15/05/2023 20:01

Bear in mind blue is the hardest colour to wash out.
But yes, I have, pinks, purples orange, great fun, but I got bored keeping it up as I had to bleach it.
In fact I've never dyed it a natural colour.

Hellocatshome · 15/05/2023 20:02

Pink, purple and pillar box red. As PP said blue is a pain and goes green quite quickly. If you dont mind covering it with a darker colour or stripping it out then go for it.

Yeah I know blue fades fast and is hard to get out which is exactly what’s stopping me.

Could you do blue tips and cut them off afterwards when faded?

My sister has gone all sorts! Pink suited her the most, closely followed by purple. I'm always in awe of her wild hair adventures, wish I had the balls to do it 😂

cctvrec · 15/05/2023 20:12

I'm currently purple.
I'm 41, brunette and have never dyed my hair before and one day thought, "fuck it". I went for it. My hairdresser did a temporary toner to show me and the following fortnight I was back telling her to go for it! I love it and will probably keep dying it for years to come.

BreviloquentBastard · 15/05/2023 20:14

I had mine bright blue in my early 20's. I bleached it almost white first so it faded to a quite pretty bluey-silver rather than that awful greenish yellow you see a lot. I had to chop it off to get rid of it but I enjoyed it while I had it.

Gymmum82 · 15/05/2023 20:18

Yes lots of colours. You just have to maintain the colour which can be annoying. I dye mine every 2 weeks at home so it doesn’t fade. I find you can’t keep a colour otherwise as it fades and looks horrible. Mine is green and black currently

IncyWincyGrownUp · 15/05/2023 20:33

The only colour I’ve never dyed my hair is blonde, because I find it boring and it makes me look shit. Currently peach.

Bluey18 · 15/05/2023 20:39

As above, blue is a nightmare to get out and can leave you with a green tint no matter what you do. Would really recommend pink, red or even purple instead.

TooOldForThisNonsense · 15/05/2023 20:41

I’ve had mine pink, now blonde with pink underlights

wouldbeflowerfarmer · 15/05/2023 20:51

I've had mine blue, looked a bit too much like Marge Simpson! Blue/red/purple really liked that. At the moment it's green and purple with grey 'highlights' showing through.

pointythings · 15/05/2023 21:48

I went dark green last summer (I am about 70% grey) and it looked amazing. It faded to a gorgeous teal and silver and then gradually back to grey, worked really well for me. Mid blue faded to silvery blue then grey, so I guess there are perks to being mostly grey - I don't need to bleach for it to look good and fade nicely.

betaglucans · 15/05/2023 21:49

Pink is lovely!

ASGIRC · 15/05/2023 23:00

Mine is currently blue, with a pink fringe.
Have had it like this for almost two years now. Previously I had it purple with pink fringe.

Before I just dip dyed, usually blue, purple and pink, before that I had coloured strands, but the maintenance on that was hard!

I redo mine every 2.5/3 months, including bleaching the roots and cutting it (its a short bob).

Yes, the blue fades to greenish, but its not too bad. The darker the blue, the longer it lasts.

Im 40 and Ive been dying my hair unnatural colours for 15ish years!

foxlover47 · 15/05/2023 23:02

I dyed mine pink for machine gun Kelly's tour , I'm 48 and I loved it :)
Go for it

Cheezecake · 15/05/2023 23:06

You could do a sectional tester and decide from there. BTW, I have done blue, green, purple, orange....

SkankingWombat · 15/05/2023 23:14

I did for years when I was younger. The only colours I haven't ever dyed my hair are orange and black. I gave up on the unnatural colours eventually due to the upkeep, so now just cycle through various blondes and browns to liven up my dull mousey natural colour.

FishyMcFishyfingersFace · 16/05/2023 00:50

I went blue and I love it. Fades too fast for my liking but I just use a home kit and do it when I feel like it. The grey goes a brighter blue so adds some variety/natural highlights. You can try it and if you like it, keep it longer; if you don't then let it grow out and fade, then dye it a different colour.

4catsaremylife · 16/05/2023 01:54

My hair is toned grey on the top layers with bright purple underneath and a purple section. I love it and get random people telling me they love it too.

ThemysteriousH · 16/05/2023 02:37

I’m 31, not had “normal” colour since I was 16.
do it!! Life’s too short :)

top tip - buy “crazy colour” off Amazon, add a little to your conditioner each time you wash your hair to keep it vibrant for longer!

DPotter · 16/05/2023 03:23

Another Mumsnetter with purple hair!

It is a bit of a conversation starter that's for sure and a few double takes!

ApolloandDaphne · 16/05/2023 04:12

I have pink in the underneath sections of my hair. It is rather lovely and you only see it when my hair moves.

FannythePinkFlamingo · 16/05/2023 06:41

I'm ash blonde with blue streaks. Had it done when I was 50 and I love it. I just let it fade/ grow out and get it done again. Hasn't gone green so far.

FearlessSwiftie · 16/05/2023 06:50

You can change hair color in a picture through something like Photodiva to see if you actually like it on yourself first! I've had red hair but the color faded quickly and needed a touch-up pretty soon. It was all worth it and I loved the vibrant red on my hair, but I must admit that maintenance takes time and money.
