How quickly did you get engaged?

Just being nosy. A friend has recently got engaged after five weeks - which sounds insane but they knew each other throughout childhood and growing up, and stayed in touch then got together casually, broke up and reconnected again recently. And they're absolutely perfect for each other, we all said they would always end up together so it doesn't feel crazy...

Whereas I was with my other half for ten years before we got engaged! It just got me thinking about how it's so different for everyone and I wondered what the average kind of time is - I'm guessing we are both very opposite ends of the spectrum!

Six weeks. Me 39 him 43. Met through an introduction agency (not online). We got married a year later, had two kids. Sadly he died suddenly just before our 7th anniversary.

Kyse23 · 12/05/2023 21:05

Greeneyegirl · 12/05/2023 21:08

lupinlapain · 12/05/2023 21:10

We didn't get engaged... we just got married

LunaTheCat · 12/05/2023 21:10

been together almost 22 years.
Love him still …drives me mad at times but could be with no-one else.

Cocolapew · 12/05/2023 21:11

3 weeks and married a year later, been married 28 years.

TiggeryBear · 12/05/2023 21:18

Been together almost 17 years & still waiting. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Proseccoagain · 12/05/2023 21:19

DH proposed after 6 weeks. I was 24 and he was 2 years older. We were married three years later, and had 49 years together (including our engagement) before he died. It's been 5 years now and miss him so much.

6 months after a whirlwind

Thatnameistaken · 12/05/2023 21:24

27 years, and then we didn't really get engaged, just decided to make it legal.

Sillybanana · 12/05/2023 21:27

Engaged after 6 months still together 20 years later

Nordicmom · 12/05/2023 21:27

5 weeks after meeting and starting to date and we’ve been married for 19 y now with two kids . We did take our time with a wedding though it was 3 ,5 y later . Sometimes when you know you know !

wildinthecountry · 12/05/2023 21:29

Depends on what engaged means , some people get engaged with absolute intent to get married and do so . Some people get engaged for .. well I don't know , they stay engaged for ever .

WeightInLine · 12/05/2023 21:31

6 months. Married for 18 years so far.

Inside - silently - I judge adult couples that have been together 3+ months and aren’t engaged. IME it’s cos the man is holding out for a better offer.

LeefPeeper · 12/05/2023 21:34

16 years 😂 got married within 3 months of getting engaged. I say engaged it was more “do you think it’s about time we got married?” “Yea, you are probably right”

LBOCS2 · 12/05/2023 21:35

Six weeks. Married 51 weeks after meeting, and we've been together for 14 years now.

sugarspices · 12/05/2023 21:42

Just under a year! We'll have been together 2.5 years by the time we get married though. We would have done it quicker but I found out I was pregnant 15 days after the engagement, so wedding plans have been on the back burner!

Songbird54321 · 12/05/2023 21:47

11 years, 4 house changes and 2 kids in and no engagement here.
Worst nightmare for both of us is a wedding and it'd break our families hearts if we went off and did it without them (his more than mine).
The only piece of advice my nanna gave me was to never get married. She was married over 50 years 😂

IncompleteSenten · 12/05/2023 21:52

A month maybe.
We were married 3 months after our first meeting.
Celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary earlier this year.

Tryingtoconceivenumber2 · 12/05/2023 21:57

Just over 3 years but we had known each other approx 10 years, friend's before x

Really? That's quite a stereotype to assume it's the man wanting to delay.... and why would you judge anything over three months?

For me, I would not feel out of honeymoon mode... I wouldn't have seen the person and how they reacted in a wide range of scenarios, including when challenged/exhausted/under stress.... or tested that they fully pulled their weight and made my life easier, not harder....or seen how they treat their own family, or had a chance to build a relationship with their family.... Someone can still be maintaining 'best behaviour' over that timescale. You can still be in a delightful smog of being turned on and a bit gaga in love etc..... also, if you meet young, you are barely sure who you are becoming, never mind them.

For all those reasons, I've taken five years before getting married (in three weeks time!). I was fantasising about marrying him within a month, it was such an intense, blissful connection. And he would have happily married me within a few months. But I love the feeling of knowing him so deeply and feeling we have already been through a lot together, we know what to expect, I know all his faults and vice versa. I am still head over heels in love though!!!!

So I guess you could argue I could just have trusted my instincts more! All power to those who do!Grin

From strangers to engaged in 5 months in our mid 20s. We started to chat about marriage after a few weeks I guess. Sometimes it just feels comfortable. 25 years later we’re still happy.

DinosApple · 13/05/2023 07:49

2 years in. Married just under 3 years after we started seeing each other.
Been together 18 years now, with an 18 year age gap between us.
