Paper towel or kitchen roll? What do you call it?

I was visiting my SIL recently and while helping clean up after dinner I asked her where she kept her kitchen roll. She looked at me blankly and said 'what?'. I figured she just didn't hear me properly so asked again where the kitchen roll was and was again met with a confused look. I asked if she had any kitchen roll or if she had run out and she really didn't know what I was asking her for. It was only when I started searching and found the roll in the cupboard under the sink that she said 'Ah, you were looking for PAPER TOWEL!'
Now I don't think I'm the unreasonable one here, surely everyone knows that kitchen roll is another name for paper towel?
What do you call it in your house?

Kitchen roll. I believe calling kitchen roll “paper towel” is an Americanism. Paper towels in the uk are disposable things that you find in public toilets to dry your hands on.

Curlyfluff · 11/05/2023 10:38

Oops I always call it Scottex, years of living in Italy:) But obviously kitchen paper/roll is the same thing!

Kitchen roll is the white stuff on a roll, paper towels are those individual slightly thinker paper towels that you sometimes get in public toilets where you pull out one at a time to dry your hands.

This!

We call it Burly, after an episode of The Simpsons, where their Burly-branded kitchen roll has a hunky lumberjack logo on it, whom Marge falls in love with; and six rolls of it will soak up an entire lake Grin

She's being deliberately snobby about it, like when you get people who pretend not to know what you mean if you say 'serviette' instead of 'napkin' - or those who make out that they have no idea what they mean when a northerner/midlander calls their midday meal 'dinner'.

Kitchen roll
Unless I have stolen one of the paper towel inserts from work that are piled up in the storage cupboard. Then it's paper towel

IsGoodIsDon · 11/05/2023 10:55

I call it paper towel, but I’m not from the U.K. I generally had no idea what my OH was talking about when he asked me to buy kitchen roll from the supermarket.

stopringingme · 11/05/2023 11:12

Kitchen roll in the kitchen

Paper towels are in a dispenser in a public toilet to dry your hands on, and are usually blue

SIL was gaslighting you.

Do you know what gaslighting means?

Spanielsarepainless · 11/05/2023 12:05

Kitchen roll. But I have a roll of paper towels for non-foody faffing!

Kitchen roll. I think of 'paper towel' as those blue sheets that you pull from a dispenser that are actually more papery.

This! or the sheets of paper towels you get in public toilets instead of hand dryers.

MargotMoon · 11/05/2023 12:13

It says kitchen roll on the packet when you buy it in the supermarket so she must know what it's called!

purplecorkheart · 11/05/2023 12:16

Kitchen paper in my house. I would normally consider paper towels as towel for drying your hands in public bathrooms. However if you asked for it in the context that you did I would have known you meant kitchen paper.

Theoldwoman · 11/05/2023 12:19

Paper towel. Never heard it called kitchen roll.

What does it say on the packet? What does it say on the supermarket online order?

TokyoSushi · 11/05/2023 12:21

Kitchen roll. DH was a Chef for a long time so calls it paper towel.

Margrethe · 11/05/2023 12:22

Kitchen roll = British English
Paper towels = American English

Justyouwaitandseeagain · 11/05/2023 12:26

Kitchen roll. Agree paper towels are what you dry your hands on in toilets.

Floralnomad · 11/05/2023 12:26

Kitchen roll

ChocChipHandbag · 11/05/2023 12:34

Interesting

Paper towel or kitchen roll? What do you call it?
ScottBakula · 11/05/2023 12:39

Kitchen roll & Toilet roll
All those that call the stuff you get on a roll paper are odd , it's not paper .
However agree the type that you get in dispenser in offices , public toilets is papery so paper towel is a more fitting name.

But which ever term you use I think @ScotInExile sil was winding her up / been obtuse.

Pavlova31 · 11/05/2023 12:41

Growing up my family called it Scottie Roll.

SnowAtRedRocks · 11/05/2023 12:43

I say paper towel, but my partner says kitchen roll so I know both names.

LibertyLily · 11/05/2023 13:27

Kitchen roll.

Northernsouloldies · 11/05/2023 13:27

K roll, became a habit as that's how it's written on my shopping list.

BotterMon · 11/05/2023 13:31

Essuie-tout but we speak French 😁I call it kitchen paper in English

CrumpetandSausage · 11/05/2023 13:45

I’m Australian. It’s paper towel. And toilet paper. And glad wrap. Took me a long time to figure out what to call glad wrap here.
