Paper towel or kitchen roll? What do you call it?

I was visiting my SIL recently and while helping clean up after dinner I asked her where she kept her kitchen roll. She looked at me blankly and said 'what?'. I figured she just didn't hear me properly so asked again where the kitchen roll was and was again met with a confused look. I asked if she had any kitchen roll or if she had run out and she really didn't know what I was asking her for. It was only when I started searching and found the roll in the cupboard under the sink that she said 'Ah, you were looking for PAPER TOWEL!'
Now I don't think I'm the unreasonable one here, surely everyone knows that kitchen roll is another name for paper towel?
What do you call it in your house?

Toilet roll is also weird.
Do British people have something against the word ‘paper’?

What is weird? it comes on a roll Confused

Kitchen towels or sometimes paper towels.
I would be confused with kitchen roll but I’m not from UK originally, don’t think I’ve heard anyone around saying kitchen roll usually it’s kitchen towels.

Is your SIL from the UK?

The one that makes me laugh is "glad wrap". (Australian)

She's Australian but has been married to an English family for nearly 30 years so I would have assumed she had heard of it before. She also says Glad Wrap (its a brand name in Australia) but knows what you want if you ask for cling film.

Kitchen roll

I am not from the UK. Paper towel (which is what the object is) makes more sense than Kitchen Roll.
Roll of what? Roll of kitchen?

Roll of paper, useful in the kitchen! It reminds me of some comedy sketch or something years ago, where they were trying to avoid saying the name Pot Noodle by describing it as a noodle-based snack in a pot!
Paper towel is definitely what you get in public or office toilets in the UK to wipe your hands on after washing them.

Kitchen roll
Paper towel = public toilets
Kitchen towel is a separate hand drying towel which people more hygienic than me (my mum) keep in the kitchen. I’m a sloven and use a tea towel

Exactly this!
I have a kitchen towel and I tea towel.
I don't think I have ever been called hygienic though 😆

@Summertimesunshineandfizz
I agree with your descriptions.
paper towel is for drying hands.

I'll take the complement my kitchen is hygienic - the floor might need a hoover and a mop - but kitchen towel and dish towel = hygienic.

DH is a minger who's been known to dry his hands on the dish towel.

PurelyBelter · 11/05/2023 09:22

Kitchen Roll. You use a towel to dry things not clean up messes, and you’d never use a kitchen roll to dry the dishes. Paper Towels are what you dry your hands on in public toilets instead of cloth towels.

It’s in the same vein as blue roll.

But I also dry my hands on tea towels so what the fuck do I know.

MrsClatterbuck · 11/05/2023 09:26

Kitchen roll here which is on one of those holders in the kitchen. I also have a box of paper towels in the downstairs loo.

Polis · 11/05/2023 09:29

Both, but we do actually have a blue roll in the kitchen.

Years ago in school I got a massive telling of for drying pots with a tea towel instead of a dish cloth in domestic science apparently it was unhygienic!!!

TinaTotal · 11/05/2023 09:34

Kitchen roll. I wouldn't have known what she was talking about if she had asked me for paper towels. (Because we don't live in a public toilet)

Ontopofthesunset · 11/05/2023 09:35

In this house it's kitchen towel, but I would know what someone meant if they said kitchen roll. We definitely don't say kitchen roll or paper towel.

It's toilet paper in general - as in 'we need to buy more toilet paper' - but one individual toilet roll, as in 'oh, I need another toilet roll in this bathroom'. Though actually I might say 'another roll of toilet paper'.

mondaytosunday · 11/05/2023 09:35

Paper towels. I grew up in the US though.

Eh? Dish cloths are designed to be wet, they are not for drying Confused

Toddlerteaplease · 11/05/2023 09:53

Kitchen roll.

LadyJ2023 · 11/05/2023 10:00

Kitchen roll when I think paper towels I think blue wipe your hands ones lol

CircleofWillis · 11/05/2023 10:07

Paper towel - kitchen
Toilet paper - toilet / bathroom
Tea towel - for drying dishes and handling hot stuff
Dish cloth - for wiping surfaces
Kitchen sponge - for washing dishes etc
Dish brush - for scrubbing dishes etc, esp cups and jars.

OldTinHat · 11/05/2023 10:12

I call it both because I have the blue paper stuff and the quilted supermarket stuff so imo they are interchangeable!

Sudokufail · 11/05/2023 10:25

Kitchen roll, but I'd have understood what you meant.

ItsBritneyBitchhhh · 11/05/2023 10:27

Kitchen towel in my house. Seems that she was being purposely obtuse

HowToLearnToLoveMyself · 11/05/2023 10:27

Kichen roll.

FusRoDah · 11/05/2023 10:30

Kitchen roll for the kitchen

Paper towels are what you dry your hands on in public toilets
