We have a hedgehog!!

Years ago we often saw one in the garden but haven't for ages.. probably 15 years or more. I blamed fences with gravel boards. But tonight, there on the lawn was a big fat hedgehog!

I am weirdly pleased.

I am excited for you! We had a hedgehog when we first moved in but not since! We've got holes in fencing and a very supportive neighbourhood, i Blame the abundance of a wonderful healthy fox population, which i also love, but would be thrilled to see a hedgehog.

CassTheFox · 09/05/2023 22:58

Please send photos ☺️🦔

Our hedgehog visitors are thin on the ground this year and they are coming late at night as we see them on cctv. One year we had at least 6 - because they were all in the garden at the same time.

We also have foxes who mostly ignore them.

Hurrah! Now encourage him / her a little by putting water out and a few cat or hedgehog biscuits. They struggle at certain times with food . We have a hedgehog doorway in our fence, and the pre-schoolers next door help me feed them 🥰

AlisonDonut · 26/07/2023 16:00

We have 2. We also have slugs. To make it easier for the hedgehogs, when I chop back leaves of the courgettes, which the slugs love, I put them where I know the hedgehogs pass through at night and early in the evening the slugs are all over the chippings, and next morning they are clean.

Aww , hedgehogs are lovely . We have one too . Every morning my husband checks the cctv of the garden. One night he didn’t come and husband was very worried . We think he lives in a big overgrowth patch at the side of the bungalow which has gone wild . The rest of the garden is very wildlife friendly , but tidy enough to see him / her .

I’d love a hedgehog!!!

Aposterhasnoname · 26/07/2023 16:10

We have at least two. Love to see them pootling around the garden. Think I’d die of delight if we saw babies.

LittleBow89 · 26/07/2023 16:18

oooh I’m delighted for you! Love little hogs.

I was on an evening walk through the neighbourhood in Berlin where I was living a few years ago and I saw hedgehog, I literally squealed I was so excited. Best day ever. They’re sooo cute.

gingerguineapig · 26/07/2023 16:40

How brilliant - I have never seen one where we currently live, I think because we are a bit of a badger stronghold.

Yes please send pictures.

One of my colleagues has a webcam and sometimes posts footage in our work group chat - they are so cute.

Does anyone remember the thread on here about Jumanji and being in the bath?

morelippy · 26/07/2023 16:43

Just thought I'd add that since I started this in may we have had them visit every night to eat the food I leave for them. The most we've had is 3

They come about 9.30... regular as clockwork

We had a couple but I've not seen them since it's been raining non stop, I'm hoping they'll return.

Ddog was less impressed by the garden invasion.

Hedgehogs are considered good luck, at least according to the ancient Egyptians. Enjoy!

pottydimley · 26/07/2023 17:53

We have a big one that roams around local gardens but mostly goes into my neighbour's garden and house. She was awoken by a noise in the night and found that it had been locked in the kitchen and was looking for a way out! She wasn't best pleased to be cleaning up hog poo at 4 am! It coexists very happily with all our cats - we have five between us.

cocksstrideintheevening · 26/07/2023 18:02

Found out at the weekend that we have a huge one. Ddog was outside going absolutely Bessel with the strangest bark I've ever heard, not sure if he was terrified or excited.

We thought we may have a badger as something was pushing through the fences, now think it was the giant 🦔

He was totally non plussed about the dog, just sat looking at him.

Not sure what to do about food. We have had historic rat problems.

UnfunnyJester · 26/07/2023 18:28

We have one too! It's been very exciting waiting for it to make an appearance in the evenings.

squashyhat · 26/07/2023 18:47

We don't have them at home, but my parents had a static caravan which DH and I used to borrow and we were woken one night by the weirdest sounds which turned out to be hedgehog rumpy-pumpy just outside Grin

Lucky you!

Bovrilla · 26/07/2023 18:51

Anyone who loves hogs, please talk to your neighbours and see if you can agree to put in a hedgehog highway between your gardens if you have fences, not hedges.

A hole the size of a cd/dvd is perfect, top small for cats but perfect for Hoggy adventures and they'll thrive if you can link up lots of gardens and start looking after them

They need all they help we can give them as their numbers have plummeted.

Jux · 26/07/2023 18:53

Sadly we have ancient walls on all sides which go down at least 6 ft. I'm just wondering if I could unobtrisuvely dig out one brick of it......

Jux · 26/07/2023 18:55

...and we have lots of cats which go everywhere.

Jux · 26/07/2023 18:58

Could everyone with hogs PLEASE post pics? Please please please please plea-ease! Thank you.

ComputerInitiateJump · 26/07/2023 19:09

We have regular hogs. There was plenty of LOUD sexy time happening about a month ago on the hot nights so hopefully we'll have some babies soon. We've had hogs, a fox and the cat all out on the lawn together. They just ignore each other as long as there's enough food for all.

Daleksatemyshed · 26/07/2023 19:13

Very jealous Op, my garden is as wildlife friendly as possile but still no hedgehogs. Getting rare now sadly
