What would Camilla's role in the royal family be if....

she outlives Charles?

Just pondering after watching a TV programme about Charles life today...they showed footage of the late queen mother and I got to thinking. If she outlives Charles, what will her title be? They don't have children together so she wouldn't be the king's mother would she? She has no biological ties to the family like the late QM. Would she still attend royal events? I get the feeling that William tolerates her but I doubt he's particularly fond of her...I could be wrong of course? Would she still play a role both personally and officially? What do you think?

No, I think she would retire with a handsome pension from the firm. She is the King's wife. That's all.

Mustardandchickensandwiches · 06/05/2023 21:50

Dowager queen would probably be her title.

Needmorelego · 06/05/2023 21:53

She will still be Queen Camilla. Queens of Kings who have passed are still called Queen.
The Queen Mother was only called that because she was Elizabeth the same as her daughter.
She would either retire from active service or she wouldn't. That's up to her really.

She is the future future king’s step grandmother, and by accounts they are very fond of her (probably as their grandmother on that side is dead, so it’s not like they already have 2). She isn’t just the king’s wife.

ColgateAndMustardShouldNeverMix · 06/05/2023 22:03

I imagine not much would change as long as she’s healthy. Suspect she would carry on with charity work, the boring day to day Royal duties (opening buildings etc) and the odd “set piece”.

DisforDarkChocolate · 06/05/2023 22:06

I imagine she'd step back somewhat but still be involved in the charities she's patron of. It's not like she's young. I can still see her being involved in the family because she looks to get on well with some of them.

Comedycook · 06/05/2023 22:07

Yes, dowager queen is what she'd be, you're right I think. But on a personal level, will William consider her family without Charles there?

Before QM the surviving Queen was just known as dowager queen and not seen much anyway because of their age/mobility. QM was a bit of an exception as Elizabeth was so young in the role so QM was still young enough to be doing events for so many years. Doubt it will be much of an issue with Camilla, by the time Charles dies she'll probably welcome a retirement behind the scenes.

CarolinaInTheMorning · 06/05/2023 22:12

As for her style, she will be Her Majesty Queen Camilla. Catherine will be Her Majesty The Queen.

As for her role, I think that will be dependent on her age. My guess is that she would look forward to a quiet life.

They probably tolerate her but have little personal connection. Same as thousands of step families

Thousands of other step families have a better relationship with one another than that.

A few hundred years ago, speculating about the death of your sovereign would have had your head on a spike by the end of the week.

we did however have the same treasonous conversation earlier and decided that the King’s stepmother is unlikely, but an amusing thought nevertheless.

No-one knows, unless they know the people involved personally.

My guess would be she would step back a bit and keep on with the causes she wants rather than those she does as part of her current role, and would turn up at official events such as royal weddings and funerals etc as part of her 'Dowager Queen' role.

Private events as she and the other people are inclined - but she has always had overlapping social circles with the royal family, so it is likely they would see each other on a fairly regular basis, at least until the mutual friends die out.

The Queen Mother chose to be called that as she preferred it to "Dowager Queen", but it was just another way of saying the same thing - it didn't refer to her status as the Queen's actual mother. (Not like Henry VII's mother, who styled herself "My Lady the King's Mother" because she had never been the Queen).

Why must they?

The Queen was clearly fond of her. The princes are no longer children. They must understand by now that their parents’ marriage was an arrangement. She makes their dad happy.

Toddlerteaplease · 07/05/2023 03:05

Exactly the same role as Queen Mary and The Queen mother.

They might be over it. But they also watched their mother go through hell and she is partly to blame. They have to do as the are told. Once William is at the top he can choose whether he wants her in his life.

Also there was still Queen Mary, a dowager queen. So there were two Queen Elizabeths and two dowager queens at the same time.

Queen Mother does refer to the fact she was a queen, and was the mother of the current monarch. Queen Mary was technically a queen mother (although didn't use the title) until King George died.

I imagine Camilla will just comfortably retire and be glad to have a rest. Depending on how long Charles lives, I suppose she might do what Phillip did and retire from royal duties early anyway. I know I wouldn't want to be traipsing around community centres in my 80s, no matter how many palaces I had.
(I've written the word queen so many times in this it doesn't look like a word anymore)

sandgrown · 07/05/2023 07:14

None of us really know the relationship between the family unless there are any royals on here! I expect Camilla would carry on with charity work but step back . Whether you love or hate Camilla she and Charles are obviously very close and the biggest mistake of their lives is that they didn’t marry in the first place . If you believe what you read Princess Diana set her hat at marrying Charles but , not unlike Meghan, the role was too intense for her and the cracks started to appear. Diana was no angel in the way she behaved and despite being totally vilified Camilla kept a dignified silence .

QuintanaRoo · 07/05/2023 07:22

Well personally I’m hoping for some sort of Game of Thrones coup and she attempts to get Tom on the throne! 😆

We need to remember Camilla wasn’t the only side piece.

DustyLee123 · 07/05/2023 07:30

I actually think she’s got something on him, something big, and that’s why she’s ‘queen’ now.

FelicityFlops · 07/05/2023 07:30

I do not think this is ever going to be a serious issue. I suspect that she will go first, followed shortly by Charles, who will die of a broken heart.
