What would Camilla's role in the royal family be if....

she outlives Charles?

Just pondering after watching a TV programme about Charles life today...they showed footage of the late queen mother and I got to thinking. If she outlives Charles, what will her title be? They don't have children together so she wouldn't be the king's mother would she? She has no biological ties to the family like the late QM. Would she still attend royal events? I get the feeling that William tolerates her but I doubt he's particularly fond of her...I could be wrong of course? Would she still play a role both personally and officially? What do you think?

We need to remember Camilla wasn’t the only side piece.

True, Diana had affairs

Based on her handling of the last 20 years, I think she’ll be fine. Whatever you might think of her personally, she has conducted herself with grace, dignity and patience. She was happy for years to be out of the public eye or not sitting with Charles at official events when she knew the public didn’t tolerate her. I think she will be very happy to be guided by the wishes of William and Kate and if that is retirement she’ll do that, or if they still wish her to do engagements she’ll do that. I think she absolutely understands that the RF is about the Firm and not about the wishes of individuals.

Doesn't matter whether anyone considers her part of the family

She will be the dowager Queen

Just like a consort, a dowager Queen is called HM Queen Firstname

Only exception is if dowager queen and new queen regnant have the same first name, then the widowed queen can choose if she wishes to be known as Dowager Queen or Queen Mother.

Camilla won't get that choice as Charles (unless tragedy strikes) will be succeeded by King William.

There are no other Camillas in the top part of the line of succession (in their own right or as potential consorts) so there's no reason to expect she'll ever be anything other than HM Queen until death

True, Diana had affairs

Irrespective of Diana's affairs, she wasn't the only "side piece" at around the time of Charles' wedding to Diana.

There was no reason whatsoever to think that either one of his main two mistresses would become an enduring fixture in later life (or if one would, then which).

The Queen Mother is a title used as a) the QM had the same name as her daughter so it would have been confusing to have two Queen Elizabeths and b) QM preferred it to Dowager Queen. The title was not Queen's Mother. That is not a thing so even if Camilla was William's Mother she would not be titled King's Mother.

Camilla would still be Queen Camilla and her role, I suppose, depends on her age and health when the time comes and will be decided on between the family. The QM had a long time in her role and carved it out for herself.

Exactly - I quite like Camilla, and didn’t particularly like Diana, but this narrative that Charles and Camilla were this great love affair cruelly separated by his forced marriage is a total fabrication by the Palace to make Queen Camilla more acceptable to the public.

They had a fling, she dumped him and married somebody else, Charles had numerous other flings, married Diana, Diana and him both shagged about, Camilla came back on the scene, Diana blew the marriage up and Charles and Camilla made the best of it.

Even if William and Harry had minimal contact with Queen Camilla in the event of King Charles III predeceasing her, I think her children (Laura and Tom) and grandchildren will be supportive, and her charities still be supported and glad of her being there.

I don't get the impression that Camilla loves royal life...I may be wrong. I just wonder if Charles died first, perhaps she' be quite happy to slide into aristocratic obscurity away from the royals and be with her own family. Perhaps just doing the odd charity event for causes she particularly cares about?
