Where to meet between London and Edinburgh???

I have a partner who now lives in Edinburgh, I live in London. We are both on a budget.

So far, my partner has been riding the bus, but it is very long and exhausting, especially for just a long weekend.

Next Bank holiday weekend, we have decided to meet somewhere in the middle. Does anyone have any suggestions regarding a budget romantic escape? We enjoy picturesque walks, views, and bodies of water.

We are open to going abroad if it’s a great deal. I can’t do the bus journey for various reasons, and the rail tickets are more expensive than some package holidays! In which case, we are happy to catch a flight somewhere sunny!

Any and all suggestions gratefully looked up. Thank you in advance!

Yorkshire/York? Depends on how you’re travelling- if train then anywhere on east coast mainline

LittleMy77 · 06/05/2023 14:43

York; it’s almost equidistant between the two on the lner train, lots of stuff to do and see and nice walks on the outskirts if you want some quiet

Whiteroomjoy · 06/05/2023 14:44

My house? Not sure I can make it that romantic though🤷🏼‍♀️

Around York ,Yorkshire Dales ,Harrogate etc.

BIWI · 06/05/2023 14:46

York is a good idea. It's 2.5 hours on the train from Edinburgh and around 1hr 50 minutes from London to York.

Thank you everyone!

suggestions of places to stay and things to do?

Also any handy tips about finding cheap train tickets and such? Flights seem to be crazy expensive.

Trainline for tickets, no point flying unless you’re going to london/Edinburgh

chipsandpeas · 06/05/2023 15:02

york is probably the easiest as its a stop on the main edin-london trainline

Wisterical · 06/05/2023 15:06

I think you might need to up your game re effort and initiative if you're want this relationship to succeed!

Honeyroar · 06/05/2023 15:10

What sort of thing do you fancy? City/coast/lakes/countryside…. You can find all that half way..

Heroicallyfound · 06/05/2023 15:12

Get a railcard and book the train in advance.

LIZS · 06/05/2023 15:16

Probably cheaper to meet abroad. Look up where the cheapest flights are going.

Raera · 06/05/2023 15:17

York will probably have racing on at the bank holiday which means all accommodation will go up in price and it will be really busy.

Fandabedodgy · 06/05/2023 15:18

York or Harrogate

Scottishskifun · 06/05/2023 15:27

Newcastle will be much cheaper than York.
As for cheap train tickets it's often cheaper to do singles and break the journey (despite being on the same train) but takes some playing about with.

quicklybeendrivenmad · 06/05/2023 15:32

York will be heaving as racing is on, on the 27th also as it bank holiday, there will be more stag and hen do's descending (its horrific on normal weekends I used to hate working Saturdays in york) rather than paying for 2 sets of rail tickets maybe better off one of you travelling and booking something within easy reach of one of you.

BarbaraofSeville · 06/05/2023 15:41

Take it in turns to fly between London and Edinburgh and stay at each other's home, save the cost of the hotel.

But given the cost of flights like that, and the east coast main line, its probably cheaper to go to whichever unfashionable part of Europe Ryanair goes to from both London and Edinburgh for the least money.

MrsFezziwig · 06/05/2023 15:41

I would have suggested York except it’s expensive to stay overnight. What about Durham? It has most of what you’re looking for.

Obviously it would be uncharitable of me to point out if you’d planned all this weeks ago (given that the dates of Bank Holidays are fixed) then you could have had much cheaper train tickets and a better choice of accommodation. Train fares in the UK mainly work on dynamic pricing, so the later you book the more expensive it is. I can go from Yorkshire to London for £20 return if I book early enough.

Toddlerteaplease · 06/05/2023 15:44

Also came to say York!

KittyAlfred · 06/05/2023 15:51

lake District?
