Where to meet between London and Edinburgh???

I have a partner who now lives in Edinburgh, I live in London. We are both on a budget.

So far, my partner has been riding the bus, but it is very long and exhausting, especially for just a long weekend.

Next Bank holiday weekend, we have decided to meet somewhere in the middle. Does anyone have any suggestions regarding a budget romantic escape? We enjoy picturesque walks, views, and bodies of water.

We are open to going abroad if it’s a great deal. I can’t do the bus journey for various reasons, and the rail tickets are more expensive than some package holidays! In which case, we are happy to catch a flight somewhere sunny!

Any and all suggestions gratefully looked up. Thank you in advance!

I can go from Yorkshire to London for £20 return if I book early enough

Can you give some tips about finding a fare like that, I haven't seen it that cheap in years.

But for the OP, somewhere like Leeds or Wakefield might be cheaper than York, and still on the East Coast main line.

Leeds is great for a city break and while Wakefield is a bit run down in places, there's the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Hepworth gallery, Thornes Park, art trail etc.

Lumo trains are cheaper than lner, so might be worth looking at any of their stops.

All those who are saying fly, what sort of cheap deals do you think are likely to be available three weeks before a Bank Holiday weekend?

I suggest Leeds rather than York, it’s easier to find cheaper overnight stay. York and Harrogate are lively, but expensive, if you’re on budget.

Durham Durham Durham, beautiful place, less busy/ hen partyish than York and an easy stop on the East Coast Mainline

Travelling at less popular times obviously helps as well.

Create an alert to be the first to hear when Advance tickets go on sale so you can grab a bargain before the rest.

York is beautiful - we stayed there for this midpoint reason before. We stayed in a premier inn but the one that’s on the motorway, we drove so maybe check if it’s walkable/accessible to things and opt for that? It was about £35 for the night

I would have suggested York except it’s expensive to stay overnight. What about Durham? It has most of what you’re looking for.

Obviously it would be uncharitable of me to point out if you’d planned all this weeks ago (given that the dates of Bank Holidays are fixed) then you could have had much cheaper train tickets and a better choice of accommodation. Train fares in the UK mainly work on dynamic pricing, so the later you book the more expensive it is. I can go from Yorkshire to London for £20 return if I book early enough.

There’s lots of budget options just outside the city, and there’s great transport in too!

Invisimamma · 06/05/2023 16:28

If you play with dates and travel without luggage you can fly from Edinburgh to London for less than £25 (Luton, Gatwick and Stansted) you will then still have the train into central London to pay for but still significantly cheaper than both of you paying to travel half way and also paying for a hotel.

lner have a window for cheapest online tickets, you can sign up for reminders. We’ve got family returns to London and Edinburgh for less than £100
