Holiday tomorrow - weather is shit

Needed a rant

Treating ourselves (me, DH, DS4) to a week away before DC2 arrives in summer, and the weather looks gash for the whole week.

It's a place with nothing really other than outdoor things for kids. TV in room will be in the local language and I am just so pissed off that our treat (following a horrendous year for us personally) is going to be rained out, and 13-14 degrees daily.

We went to the same place at exactly the same time last year and it was 25+ every day.

I can't even get drunk to pass the time Grin

Indulge me in my pissed off-ness please!!

Weather forecasts are sometimes wrong!

Backwithanotheroneofthoseblockrockingbeats · 30/04/2023 09:09

I know, but these have been getting progressively worse over the last few days from 18-20 with cloud, to 14-16 with rain for 4 solid days (80% chance).

I am despairing! Starting to obsess over it, we will pack games and kids tablet etc but I really needed some sun and swimming!

If it’s somewhere like Italy, could you get a train to a warmer part on some days?

I sympathise, this was us over Easter and I won’t lie, it wasn’t great. The kids loved playing Uno all day though (they did refuse to go in yet another museum by the end of the week!)

Backwithanotheroneofthoseblockrockingbeats · 30/04/2023 09:26

Its somewhere with no trains, no local museums, it's just a lovely hotel on the beach with great (outdoor!!) facilities for kids.

Sigh.

We are taking Uno. I expect us all to be very good at it in a week. Just feel hard done by after spending what we have. Urgh!!

What a bizarre attitude. You can never control the weather and surely a nice relaxing holiday and family time is still a "treat"?

Workyticket · 30/04/2023 09:30

Where are you going op? Maybe we can suggest things to do?

CatOnTheChair · 30/04/2023 09:38

Take some jumpers and a rain coat.
Go and enjoy the outdoor facilities, then come back for cake and hot chocolate (take the powder that only needs water).
Swimming in the rain is fabulous.

It might not be what you'd envisioned, but it can still be a great week.

LobsterBiscuit · 30/04/2023 09:39

Where are you going? There's some rain the next couple of days in Italy but it'll be lovely after that. You wouldn't really book Greece this time of year and that's the only place that looks quite unpredictable.

Spain and the canaries look fucking glorious! The kids only have 2 days at school this week, so tempting.

It’s your attitude that’s bizarre - who doesn’t hope for a nice sunny week when they book a holiday at a beach place abroad in May?

LobsterBiscuit · 30/04/2023 09:42

"Swimming in the rain is fabulous."

It's all shits and giggles til you get struck by lightning ⚡️

mycatsanutter · 30/04/2023 09:45

@Backwithanotheroneofthoseblockrockingbeats I would be pissed off too especially as it was so nice the year before , any trips you can go on ?

Backwithanotheroneofthoseblockrockingbeats · 30/04/2023 09:57

It's Greece. We've been at this time for several years and it's always been hot and sunny. Maybe a couple of rainy outbursts but nothing more than a couple of hours at a time.

The "bizarre attitude" line was funny. Of course when you spend hard earned money to travel to a destination thousands of miles away in late spring / early summer you hope for nice weather.

Again - of course it's lovely to spend family time together but at 7 months pregnant after a really really rough year I was rather hoping to spend the week on a sun bed with a book. I'm sure to some that makes me the worst type of mother but I have a wonderful hands on husband who will make the week amazing for our DS.

No trips we can do apart from outdoors stuff.

Was just moaning. We will of course make the most but I am still going to be self indulgently pissed off if it's shit all week!!

It'll be fine. It looks a bit unpredictable but you'll deffo get Sun lounger with a book weather. Your DH might get chilly in the pool with the kid but get a wetsuit for the little one and he'll be fine!

Greece at this time of year is always a bit of a risk as it's quite early but some of the islands look lovely forecasts and none of them are 13/14 degrees unless you were planning on sunbathing at 4am 😅

Backwithanotheroneofthoseblockrockingbeats · 30/04/2023 10:18

Thank you. It's not the islands, it's coastal north mainland.

OP posts:
LobsterBiscuit · 30/04/2023 10:19

Also take pass the pigs, it's easy to play on a sun lounger when it's shady

LobsterBiscuit · 30/04/2023 10:21

It'll be fine, just prepare but I bet you get more sun than you think. Let us know!

BarbaraofSeville · 30/04/2023 10:49

Twiglets1 · 30/04/2023 09:40

Exactly. If the aim of your holiday was mainly to relax and have family time, you could do that at home for free instead of paying thousands to fly to another country.

OP, I'm sure it won't be anywhere near as bad as you fear and it won't affect the water temperature that much, it takes ages to cool down. Take raincoats and get out and about as much as you can.

LlynTegid · 30/04/2023 10:53

I'm sure even though his father was Greek you will be able to watch the Coronation of King Charles III.

You really don't understand why someone is feeling disappointed that their holiday is going to be subject to colder and wetter weather tha-than previously planned for?

HowBeOn · 30/04/2023 16:57

I was in this exact position last summer! Had a lovely villa and pool booked in the south of France and the weather was looking far worse than in the UK for the entire week. I became obsessed with checking different websites and really felt quiet grumpy and hard done by in the week leading up to it.

As it happened, it wasn’t as bad as predicted. I’d imagined wall to wall rain, but the showers were mainly at night and we had a small baby so ended up being glad it wasn’t scorching hot. We hired a car and did some day trips, ate some lovely food and I mooched around the supermarkets when the weather was bad. We had a great time and I’m sure you will too OP!

HowBeOn · 30/04/2023 16:58

(Ps I know the supermarket bit sounds boring but I utterly love going round foreign supermarkets and buying different bits you can’t get here 😂)

username100001 · 30/04/2023 17:09

Is it Halkidiki??

Modda · 30/04/2023 18:57

If it's Parga you'll be a champion Uno player by the end of the week.

We don't go to anywhere in Greece until mid May apart from Rhodes. You've been lucky in the past with good weather in the north.

Backwithanotheroneofthoseblockrockingbeats · 30/04/2023 19:43

It's Halkidiki.

I also love a foreign supermarket, to a PP. we're not near many shops but a walk to any shops is a must do!!

I was hoping everyone would say "it won't rain don't worry" Grin

We will make the most!!

We've been a few times and know that the weather is so unpredictable there. The hotel we usually stay at is having construction this year so off somewhere else.
