Edf sent me a massive bill -I'm confused help

I live in a 1 bed flat
I haven't been using much gas /electric
I've been getting the £67 a month for the 6 months
I get monthly bills -the bills with the £67 have been under £35
Last months was £28
Today I receive a 209 day bill for £309
I don't understand since I've paid every bill monthly
On the bill the £67 are not showing
Edf online chat say the £67 have been deducted
My argument was I've been billed monthly
Last month was £28
Why is it now giving me a 209 day bill

Can anyone help ?
I'm getting no help from edf

You need to read the meters now and every month, that is the only way you'll know if the DD is 'reasonable'. It could be completely wrong and you'll get another bill.
You really need to sort out access to the cupboards, how are they locked/inaccessible? Do you own or rent?

aaronlolp · 27/04/2023 21:32

The flat is rented
I have a electric key but since I've moved in I haven't been able to access it as it's totally jammed shut
They are the old style metres without actual numbers - (I've seen the other neighbours )

I'm not sure if it's shut due to bad weather etc as I've never accessed it
When I moved in I couldn't even give a reading

You've got to get into that cupboard, that needs to be your priority.

dementedpixie · 27/04/2023 21:37

You need to speak to the landlord about access to the meters. Is it an actual cupboard with proper doors?

Calmdown14 · 27/04/2023 22:12

Even in a one bed flat I'd be surprised if your electric is as low as 25kwh a month. That's not even a unit a day.

Your background power for fridge etc will be at least 0.1kw an hour and there are 24 hours in a day so that alone is more than you appear to be using on the estimate (if I can see the figures correctly as not zooming in well for me).

What is your oven and shower? Gas or electric? They will be your biggest power draw.

aaronlolp · 28/04/2023 07:11

I have a gas oven and no shower only bath

It's not no it's just little cupboards all on a wall
The landlord said contact your provider but my provider (edf) say it's not them I need to contact
Been going round in circles for months

If its the meter box with a triangle lock then the keys are cheap to buy yourself

Go over all the bills and neds to the usage amounts (kwh) they'll have an "e" or an "a" for estimate and actual. It's possible they've managed to get into the cupboard and take a read.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 28/04/2023 07:22

Even if you try to dispute it, all EDF will say is "please supply meter readings two weeks apart" for them to investigate or rectify any errors.

Exactly this.

You need to get a meter reading and if you can’t access the meters you need to get on to your landlord urgently to gain access. I was once renting a property supplied by Brit Gas and they suddenly upped my DD to £800 a month “based on estimates” but once I got readings I was actually in credit. Those estimates will cripple you.

I would also speak to CAB/ an ombudsman as it seems weird you’ve effectively had two sets of bills for the same period. My understanding (based on my one experience above) was you could only have the DD changed, not a double bill.

£110 a month for gas and electric in a one bed is high-ish but not crazy. What are windows/insulation like? Is the flat in a purpose build newer building or converted old property? These can have a big impact. For comparison I have a 3-bed det Victorian house and our bill is about £300 pcm for gas and electric (with octopus, so slightly cheaper than EDF).

The double bill was because there was a price change during the period so once they got the actual reading they calculated the likely monthly usage and credited the original bill and recharged at the correct amount.

£110 is not excessive especially since it's been so cheap so far that you've probably got into a habit of not watching every penny you spend on energy, you could put the heating on because it wasn't costing you much or at least didn't appear to. I would worry that the electric once read will push it up again.

If you post a picture of the issue accessing the meter someone will be able to help you.

NoSquirrels · 28/04/2023 09:02

Go and take a photo of your meter boxes so people can understand why you can’t access them.
