Edf sent me a massive bill -I'm confused help

I live in a 1 bed flat
I haven't been using much gas /electric
I've been getting the £67 a month for the 6 months
I get monthly bills -the bills with the £67 have been under £35
Last months was £28
Today I receive a 209 day bill for £309
I don't understand since I've paid every bill monthly
On the bill the £67 are not showing
Edf online chat say the £67 have been deducted
My argument was I've been billed monthly
Last month was £28
Why is it now giving me a 209 day bill

Can anyone help ?
I'm getting no help from edf

How would they have got a read?
Do they come out to read them?
My cupboard is totally wedged shut round the back of the building and I can't access

Yes, they usually send people out to read them every so often, so it looks like they were able to access it and get a reading.

Hugasauras · 27/04/2023 20:00

I'd suggest submitting an electricity meter reading asap in case the same thing is happening there, where your payments aren't covering usage. Relying on estimated readings is risky as they could be totally incorrect.

I'm sorry op but energy bills have been so so high this winter that it's unlikely they've only been £100 per month over winter even in a 1 bedroom flat. I suspect you've been underpaying unfortunately.

dementedpixie · 27/04/2023 20:03

What sort of cupboard?
Are both meters in there?
Looks like they've read the gas meter but are still estimating the electricity reading

aaronlolp · 27/04/2023 20:05

I'm confused why the £400 hasn't been deducted from the revised bill ?
Any ideas ?
No electric meter is at the back near the big bins

dementedpixie · 27/04/2023 20:06

Why haven't you submitted an electric reading then?

dementedpixie · 27/04/2023 20:08

Your £400 was debited from your electricity account. They have recalculated your gas charges not your electricity ones.

aaronlolp · 27/04/2023 20:09

I've been unable to access the cupboards since last year as they electric is near the big bins and it's locked

fruitbrewhaha · 27/04/2023 20:09

Have you checked the meter read for the gas? Presumably they have opened the cupboard, have you looked?

LittleBearPad · 27/04/2023 20:10

They’ve credited what you’ve paid and are billing you for what you owe. The £67 x months doesn’t change anything as it’s already been credited to your account and you owe the net amount.

Your bills were improbably low. There’s a fair chance the same will happen with the electricity bill.

Irridescantshimmmer · 27/04/2023 20:11

Check if the bill is estimated and if it is, submit a meter reading to your supplier to cancel this bill. They will bill you to your actual useage.

dementedpixie · 27/04/2023 20:12

Who has a key for the cupboard?
What sort of cupboard?
Or do you mean the plastic utility boxes?
You can buy keys for the meter boxes if that's what you mean by a cupboard

Hugasauras · 27/04/2023 20:12

Locked how? With an actual padlock? Or does it just need a standard electric cupboard key to open? You can get them for like £2 if it's just the triangle kind of ones.

TheSnowyOwl · 27/04/2023 20:13

When EDF rebill you they don’t show the payments and credits again as it’s just rolled into the cancelled charges. They were clearly underestimating your use and have now got a gas reading so cancelled the bills back for the last 209 days, which was probably either when you moved in or they last had a read. I’d expect the same with your electricity once they get to read the meter.

Throwawayme · 27/04/2023 20:19

You need to get them meter reads if you want it sorted

Throwawayme · 27/04/2023 20:22

Also im sure you can get a key for electric meter cupboards in hardware stores like b&q but your previous bills have obviously been way under estimated

Justhereforthechristmasthreads · 27/04/2023 20:28

Going forward can you get smart meters fitted so you don't have to send them reads - they will be sent automatically (and if you do have to send they are a lot easier to see on a smart meter display than trying to access meters)

You need to access both meters and do readings for them both and send them to your supplier. And then send them regularly to keep on top of your bills.

Soubriquet · 27/04/2023 20:30

I had a big problem with EDF. They tried to charge me £1000 for a small house over a 3 month period. Even the bloke on the phone was confused and said there is no way you could have done this.

Turns out, when the house was converted in a house and a flat attached to it, they kept all the wiring in the same place and the house was covering what the flat was using. We wasn’t told this and refused to pay. It’s now been 10 years and they have given up chasing us

Dibbydoos · 27/04/2023 20:39

They did this at a school I worked with - they then credited it all. Madness.

Does the bill have a letter after the meter reading? Has the meter been read and they're catching up? If not ask them to read the meter. They should do this. There shouldnt be additional meter charges on it btw as you've already paid those on your monthly bill.

Also ask them to fit gen 2 smart meters so yiu can see you usage.

any probs speak to citizens advice.

Good luck x

Willmafrockfit · 27/04/2023 20:42

the rates have gone up to coincide nicely with the end of the £67

Willmafrockfit · 27/04/2023 20:43

do you have a neighbour with a key?
or ask EDF for a key

aaronlolp · 27/04/2023 21:14

Just spoke again to EDF
They have said to set up a d/d
£110 a month
Does that seem reasonable ?

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 27/04/2023 21:19

We can't tell you if it's reasonable as we don't know your actual usage of electricity if you haven't given any accurate readings

KateyCuckoo · 27/04/2023 21:24

Are you able to answer [at least some of] the questions being asked?
