Fear of putting hand in banana boxes at supermarkets.

cocobongo1 · 24/04/2023 20:37

I seem to have picked up a fear of getting bananas out of boxes at the supermarket.

All I can think of is a big, hairy spider is inside from a far away, exotic country and it's stopping me buying bananas.

Help!

This thought had also entered my head when picking bananas...after hearing horror stories!! I pick them up with caution! And prefer the ones in bags!!

MrsTerryPratchett · 24/04/2023 20:39

Poor spider. Picked without warning, away from her tropical paradise. Shoved on a loud, cold plane, whisked away to a shitty Tescos in Croydon. Only to see your enormous, scary hand approaching.

Sad

In other news, this pretty much never happens.

Whatevergetsyouthroughthenight · 24/04/2023 20:40

Bananas are horrible anyway. Change your fruit choice to something else. Problem solved.

Thanks for now making me as scared of grapes as I am of bananas.

I read a horror story about a man bitten by a banana spider so now buy them in bags and then theatrically open the bag and inspect them. Scary stuff.

Elle200 · 24/04/2023 20:47

I have this horror too OP, I very carefully pick the top bunch and give them a shake on their way to my trolley. 🍌 🍌🍌🍌🍌 🕷️🍌🍌🍌🍌🍌

In tesco they have them displayed on a black wavy shelf - not a box to delve into and you can buy them unbagged

Randomuser9876 · 24/04/2023 20:49

I worry that the misty bit by the stalk is eggs and when I come down in the morning my hose will be OVERRUN.

This reminds me of the sitcom Mandy if you've not seen it!

MrsHamlet · 24/04/2023 20:50

Many many moons ago, I got banana spidered when I was unpacking a banana delivery at work. I always thought bananas were vile but that confirmed it.

PaperNests · 24/04/2023 21:02

I worked in a supermarket as a teen and an absolutely massive hissing cockroach crawled out of the bananas one day.

tregunamekoidestrecorumsatisdee · 24/04/2023 21:18

My husband worked in a supermarket and found a massive spider almost the size of his hand in a banana box years ago 😷

consrvatr · 24/04/2023 21:19

Why so many threads about bananas!

Ichosetheredpill · 24/04/2023 21:21

Hahaha I’m glad it’s not just me. I check grape packets too, fwiw, as a black widow is small enough to be missed. I’d die of heart failure if I found a big one in a banana box.

Mummyof287 · 24/04/2023 21:22

I always want to buy them loose and not in plastic packaging for this reason...paranoid I'll open the packaging and a big hairy one will crawl out!

Cherrysherbet · 24/04/2023 21:22

I work in a supermarket and we recently had a huge spider in the bananas. Everyone was terrified, but I was fascinated! Poor thing died as they put him in a box in the fridge until a man came to inspect him. Turned out to be a huntsman. It was really sad, poor thing.

Pseudonamed · 24/04/2023 21:25

I only buy bananas if one of the kids is with me just in case. Reading the stories here I think we will give up on them altogether.

I'm sure they could get in the bags though.

No, this is worse. If there's one in the bag, you won't notice until you're at home.

Yes, me too! Articles like this don't help...

OhFFSthisAgain · 25/04/2023 11:53

Oh god yes op. I am the same, I always think that when I open a banana too! A relative told me when I was a child, a story of a woman opening a large banana to find a huge spider curled up inside, when it unravelled it took up most of the wall, and she was trapped in the room. I don't know how exaggerated this sorry was, but it has bloody scared me my whole life! 😱

OhFFSthisAgain · 25/04/2023 11:53

And I keep them in a banana net for that very reason!

Surely2023IsTheYearForMyRainbowBaby · 25/04/2023 11:53

I used to hate putting out banana's at work. They'd arrive in the boxes all wet and disgusting. I'd end up grabbing a handful of carrier bags to put over my hand whilst cautiously putting my hand into the box grabbing a bunch of bananas and lob them as quick as I could onto the shelves in case there was a spider. One of the stores had a baby snake slither out of a box of bananas 😱which obviously caused mass hysteria and the shop to be closed whilst it was located under the fruit and veg chiller

GalileoHumpkins · 25/04/2023 11:59

I am NEVER going grocery shopping again after reading this!
