This is what happens when you initiate a housework strike

Me and young adult ds vacated the bathroom several months ago due to dh getting toothpaste everywhere when he was brushing his teeth. We got sick of the endless cleaning up so have started using the, previously unused, en suite. I clean it every week and all is well.

I told dh he was now solely responsible for the bathroom and that I wasn't cleaning it anymore as I do everywhere else and I never use the bathroom.

This was months and months ago. Dh briefly cleaned up for his sister visiting, but nothing since. He does sort of clean the toilet from time to time. The bathroom now stinks like a herd of Nubian goats are living in there. It's a build up of dirt smell rather than anything else. I'm still refusing to clean it, but I can't keep the door open as it affects the rest of the house.

Do I?

a) Ignore it

b) Clean it myself

c) Sprinkle the contents of the ash pan all over the place so he has to clean it.

d) Start keeping goats and chickens in there to justify the smell.

Dh himself and his clothing are always clean, it's just the bathroom that's awful. He's just being lazy.

So there's limescale on the bath grouting, dust behind the taps, and a bit of mildew on the sink grouting?

The way you described it I was expecting actual dirt, not just a bit neglected. What you've posted shouldn't be causing a smell.

As long as he's not making a mess in your bathroom I'd just ignore it.

She's only posted photos of a bit of the bathroom. Other areas will be just as dirty and will therefore smell. If splashes on the loo aren't cleaned up, it'll only take a few days before the bathroom starts smelling of stale pee. Revolting.

It is actual dirt. You can't see it close up in context. It's slimy and horrible with that red bacterial colony build up that people get in their bathrooms. I can't remember its name.

Remove the bath and basin - install a sheep dip.

What does he say when you speak to him about this? He's setting a very poor example for your DS.

I urge you to stick by your guns (whilst knowing that I couldn't have a room this dirty in my house, I don't think I could sleep!).

It's very disrespectful of him and extremely unhygienic.

TheMatriarchy · 16/04/2023 17:02

I would lose respect for someone who was content to live like that. Could he use his DIY skills to build an outhouse for himself and the other barnyard animals to share?

How come DH's clothing is always clean?

He's actually really fussy about his clothing being clean. He baths in disinfectant and wears clean clothing each day. I can honestly say he never smells. Probably because he never gets a sweat up doing any actual cleaning 😬

I couldn't relax in a bath knowing it was that filthy behind the taps and on the tiles though. He's only fussy when it doesn't take any actual effort.

He’s treating you and the family home with contempt yet you seem quite cheerful and jokey. It’s weird.

Get a weekly cleaner. He pays.

HE. BATHES. IN. DISINFECTANT

mate, he needs more than just help with cleaning the bathroom

brooksidebackside · 16/04/2023 17:10

What do you find attractive about this man, because the picture you paint is enough to give anyone the boak?

RuthTopp · 16/04/2023 17:10

It's worse that a student house share full of blokes !

stbrandonsboat · 16/04/2023 17:15

I have to laugh otherwise I'd be crying 😭

Does he do his own laundry?

Do you work, trying to understand why he only helps with a spring clean.

branforbrains · 16/04/2023 17:27

For his birthday you could get him a black light and one of those test kits for detecting E. coli and the other lovelies he shares a bath with. He’s probably breeding super strains that are resistant to disinfectant.

Honestly I’d probably just lock him in there until he WhatsApps proof that it’s spotless.

Yes in fact I wouldn't wait til his birthday, I'd just buy it!!!

I can't wrap my head around being so anal about cleanliness bathing in disinfectant and having clean clothes but isn't bothered about the dirt he's actually washing in.....

“Helps “ ? Why would a man help

He's retired and does his own laundry. I'm part time.

I would be dumping his nice clean laundry on his filthy bathroom floor!!

GoodChat · 16/04/2023 18:10

If he bathes in disinfectant why is the bath not super clean?!

vilepig · 16/04/2023 18:15

I would leave that. It's disgusting. Tell him if he's not going to clean it he has to make sure he closes the door and leaves the window open as it's stinking out the rest of the house.
Reminds me of my dirty pig ex. He was constantly having a go at me claiming the place wasn't clean when he was living here (it was), while never lifting a finger to help - commenting on all kinds of things - and saying I should hoover twice a day. Fuck that.
Anyway, he moved out, back to his parents' for a while and then into a studio flat. For some reason, can't remember why now, I went round to visit him in his new place after he'd been living there 3 months - the bathroom looked exactly like that and it stank. The orange bacteria colony had grown up from the shower tray up to a height of about 20 cm. Filthy pig hadn't cleaned anything. Toilet was minging and so on and so forth.
I don't understand how they can live in this filth.

Which begs the question, why isn't he doing at least 50/50 of the chores.

Gothambutnotahamster · 16/04/2023 20:00

He sounds grim Op, I've no idea how you can live like this, but whatever you do, don't clean it.

Locks on both bathrooms! Mwah ha ha!

hosepipes are cheap from b and m. I think you can even get outside hot water taps now!
Why bother with hot water?

MaroonCow · 16/04/2023 20:17

Yuck.

However, I'm reminded of the time my mother went on a housework strike (don't really know why, my siblings and I already kept our own rooms clean. It was Dad who did nothing around the house.). Since she was totally chaotic and barely did any cleaning anyway, nobody actually noticed.
