Is this a 'thing'?

I just purchased a new oven. As I was looking through the booklet I came across instructions on how to programme 'sabbath' mode. Is this common?

It’s for Shabbat observant Jews to comply with Jewish law. There’s lots of info on Google, I have learned something new tonight!

I don't get why the confusion over this. The confusion is implied by the way you've written 'thing'

It's obviously a thing, as in it exists as it's in your instructions.

icebearforpresident · 14/04/2023 23:52

My wine fridge has this as well, I’m not Jewish so don’t use it but I knew it was ‘a thing’ as you put it but I was pretty impressed it was a available function.

PussBilledDuckyPlait · 14/04/2023 23:58

How interesting - just been reading the Wikipedia article linked by Christmascracker0 - really impressive use of technology. I knew Jewish law prevented work on the Sabbath but I didn't realise this extended to certain functions being prohibited in appliances. Amazing what you learn on Mumsnet.

google - do some research. There is a big world out there were people have different religions and cultures and rituals

or Was this intentionally goady?

Yes. I appreciate not everyone knows Jewish people who keep Shabbat strictly, but why wouldn’t it be a ‘thing’ if the actual instruction booklet to your new oven details it?

Why would you automatically think the OP is being goady? You are correct in saying its a big world out there so why would you assume everybody knows everything? I have never heard of sabbath mode. There again my appliances are old and basic.

AndTheSurveySays · 15/04/2023 02:21

What does the function do? I've never heard of a sabbath function on an appliance.

Heaviside if you google sabbath mode it is very clearly explained.

so why come on to mumsnet and ask if it is a thing when it clearly is.

it doesn’t made sense - google answers OPs question in three seconds yet she/he took the time to be incredulous and type out a whole post.

AnElegantChaos · 15/04/2023 10:04

Sorry but my first thought was goady thread too - there is a huge amount of information online about this. It's a helluva lot quicker to do a quick Google than it is to start a MN thread (and then sift through the replies). I suspect OP already knew this is 'a thing'.

BabychamGlass · 15/04/2023 10:09

I can't believe the religious fridge thread was 12 years ago!

crazeecatlady · 15/04/2023 13:20

Thanks for all these posts. I really wasn't being 'goady' I think what I wanted to know is whether it is a facility readily available. I know about the significance of the Sabbath and doing no work but I didn't realise that extended to cooking (I once had a landlady who was Jewish, but she always prepared a meal for us on Saturdays)
@Stripedbag101 it didn't take long to type out 2 lines..
@Pixiedust1234 Thanks!🙂

is sabbath mode just like a timer setting where the appliance will switch its self on and off?

BringtheJury · 15/04/2023 13:31

Well I've learnt something new today, mind you if I actually read instructions instead of randomly jabbing buttons when I get a new appliance I might have learnt it sooner!

Dontsayyouloveme · 15/04/2023 13:36

It’s only goady
if you’re overly precious/easily offended 🙄

worktired · 15/04/2023 13:40

Op - thanks for posting, I had no idea that this was a thing either. Going to read up more about it.

i don’t follow your logic.

this lady bought an appliance that had a sabbath mode. She says she knows about the Jewish sabbath. Yet she took to the internet to ask people if sabbath mode is a ‘thing’. When is clearly is - she has it on her appliance. A quick google will show her that other appliances and makes have this mode. Further reinforcing that it is indeed a real thing and not a made up/joke function on her new appliance.

so why start a thread questioning it?

maybe the post was badly worded. Maybe she wanted to ask if anyone on mumsnet uses this function, curious about its usefulness to observant Jews ? Rather than questioning whether it is real

i worried it was a goady post because it could be seen as prompting people to scoff at this function or the reason for its introduction.

Villagetoraiseachild · 15/04/2023 13:55

Wow, if you compare this thread to the thread of the religious fridge thread of twelve years ago....which is hilarious......
What happy innocent fun they were having....

PuttingDownRoots · 15/04/2023 13:56

A colleague of DHs bought a robot lawnmower in Germany only to find it didn't work on Sundays... as mowing your lawn on Sundays is prohibited there.

Technology is fantastic.

Villagetoraiseachild · 15/04/2023 13:57

Like, has there been a collective loss of humour?

But where was the joke?

Villagetoraiseachild · 15/04/2023 14:33

Humour is not always about jokes, Striped. Sometimes it is in a lightness of touch.

OnMyWayToSenility · 15/04/2023 14:35

I'd forgotten about the fridge thread! Hilarious 😂

Well I have tI say the humour must have been light as a feather because I have re read this thread and I see no humour at all!!

it would have funny had OP expressed concern that her oven was judging her lifestyle - or that she and the oven had irreconcilable religious beliefs. But all she did was ask if sabbath mode is a thing!

where is the light touch of humour? I am really struggling.
