Is this a 'thing'?

I just purchased a new oven. As I was looking through the booklet I came across instructions on how to programme 'sabbath' mode. Is this common?

OP posts:

Like, has there been a collective loss of humour?

No but there has been a rise of racism and antisemitism on MN over the last few years so perfectly natural to think a thread like this might be goady. Fuck all to do with sense of humour, though not sure what you find funny about that?

HerodAntipasti · 15/04/2023 17:09

Thanks for posting, OP. How interesting! My oven is a total heathen (and cooks pizza in a most unsatisfactory manner).

greenspaces4peace · 15/04/2023 17:58

i discovered it maybe 15-20 years ago when i accidently activated it while doing a deep clean.
i now actively search out appliances that do not have that feature, because turning it back on was NOT easy.

Google is not the answer to everything. There is plenty of misinformation out there and it certainly isn't very nuanced or people orientated. Thats where forums come into it, for asking questions.

It was a bit of an eye opener reading the start of this thread and then going to the ramadan/fasting one where a poster made a lovely and informative response to the OP. Totally different feel.

Thanks for all these posts. I really wasn't being 'goady' I think what I wanted to know is whether it is a facility readily available. I know about the significance of the Sabbath and doing no work but I didn't realise that extended to cooking (I once had a landlady who was Jewish, but she always prepared a meal for us on Saturdays)
@Stripedbag101 it didn't take long to type out 2 lines..
@Pixiedust1234 Thanks!🙂

Sabbath is only until sunset on a Saturday so I'm assuming she cooked after sunset

I work with a lady who doesn't come to work events/ socials etc on a Friday if I'm London as she needs to be home before sunset as she's not allowed to travel on sabbath.

Some Jews are more observant than others like any faith

FredaFox · 16/04/2023 16:47

Also I've found I've learned a lot about Judaism and the sabbath from TikTok as there are so re really good orders there who explain things, especially the orthodox community
It's interesting

Itakecreaminmycoffee · 16/04/2023 16:53

How do some people get by in real life?

Honestly, it must be exhausting being so triggered by absolutely everything.

I’ve never heard of sabbath mode either, how interesting!

Well I have tI say the humour must have been light as a feather because I have re read this thread and I see no humour at all!!

it would have funny had OP expressed concern that her oven was judging her lifestyle - or that she and the oven had irreconcilable religious beliefs. But all she did was ask if sabbath mode is a thing!

where is the light touch of humour? I am really struggling.

I think the reference to humour was in regards to the 2011 thread linked.

There most definitely isn't any humour on this thread. 😕

I agree with you. And MN would be half-empty if you removed all the threads that could have been answered via Google.
