Experiences of recovery time after vasectomy

Comfyonion · 14/04/2023 14:28

Hoping for some experiences from others. DH is booked in for vasectomy soon, and a week and a half later I have a weekend away planned. Can anyone share any experiences of recovery time so we can see if it is likely he'll be ok to look after 2 DCs alone (age 2 & 4) for a couple of days? Thanks in advance

I had mine done on a Friday, had the weekend off, back at work on the Monday. About a week after I got an infection and had to go on antibiotics for two weeks. Though my spuds were painful and swollen I didn't have any problems looking after my 4 kid's under 6 at the time.

2 days in bed, another 5 days wearing the dressing gown of doom and then another week off work. Couldn't drive for 2 weeks.

Greensleevevssnotnose · 14/04/2023 14:41

My other half was back at work same afternoon but he did WFH for a few days before risking the commute to London. He doesn't drive so I don't know about that

A couple of days and my DH was back at his manual laborer job with no pain or concerns.

Knullrufs · 14/04/2023 14:44

It can vary a lot. I know one guy who was up and about within 48 hours and another who was in bed for 10 days. His consultant should be able to advise.

Jesus, how long after giving ACTUAL BIRTH are women expected to be up and about and looking after 2+ kids?

My dh was able to 'manage' on his own with the dc after a couple of days. Plenty of snacks and screen time, they'll be FINE

DoTrollsShitInTheThreads · 14/04/2023 14:50

My dh was fine same day. Drove from Yorkshire to Scotland same week, and although slightly swollen, no other issues whatsoever. If it was women having it, it would be done in your lunchbreak before you went back to work.

caringcarer · 14/04/2023 14:55

My exh had his vasectomy on a Friday morning. Weekend taking it easy. Back to work following Tuesday.

italldependsreally · 14/04/2023 14:58

as per the username, everyone is different. Apart from some mild swelling, I felt fine, was driving again after a couple of days, went for a bike ride a couple of weeks after IIRC. A week and a half later he should be OK unless there are complications, although might want to minimise any "Dad being a horse / climbing frame" which I seemed to do a lot of when our son was that age. Cinema / soft play / just staying at home and watching telly are probably going to be the favoured activities.

ELCismyspiritnana · 14/04/2023 15:00

Yeah echoing PP above I had an emc and was sent home with paracetamol 36 hours later to look after a new born baby. Was fine. He'll be fine.

Felix125 · 14/04/2023 15:04

Had mine done on the morning and was back to work on the afternoon.

I have known of a few who had serious complications from it - but i think its the exception rather than the rule.

Flatbellyfella · 14/04/2023 15:46

Had it done in the afternoon & was back at work next day, no problems or discomfort at all.

SomeRolyPolyLittleBatFacedGirl · 14/04/2023 15:56

DH had it done Saturday lunchtime, walked home, then was back at his office job on Monday.

Ivebeenframed · 14/04/2023 16:06

Just make sure he keeps it clean and dry and he'll be fine within a couple of days. When my dh (ex) had it done, he'd have a daily bath with salt and savlon then dried with a warm hairdryer. The doctor was quite surprised how quickly he healed.

HappyAsASandboy · 14/04/2023 16:08

My husband has had two vasectomies (don't ask!) and I don't remember any recovery time at all. I'm sure he took it easy for a few days, but he drove himself there and back both times and didn't change his (high) level of input with the kids/housework.

drumandthebass · 14/04/2023 16:11

2 days, tops

Comfyonion · 14/04/2023 16:26

Exh was on a Saturday morning, he went on the train to a London based conference, tubes, standing around, reception with booze and canapés on the Monday. He was fine

ItsCalledAConversation · 14/04/2023 16:31

Couple of days moaning on the couch with frozen peas strapped to his nethers. Walking a bit funny a few days after but more or less back to normal after a week. I had zero sympathy having had an emergency c section a few months before.

Ravageur · 14/04/2023 16:32

According to my dh he has never recovered

DRS1970 · 14/04/2023 16:33

2 weeks. Didn't listen to doctors advice to rest and ended up with complications.

trevthecat · 14/04/2023 16:34

My dh went back to work the following day. Said he could have just gone back straight after. No real pain. Took paracetamol for a couple of days as a precaution. 6 weeks on now and all healed.

Oliotya · 14/04/2023 16:34

He'll be fine. My DH needed a couple of days rest, waddled a bit for a few more days and was a little bit sore for a few weeks. Our 3rd DC was born 2 weeks after he had it done, so of course he had to "manage".

My husband was back at work the next day and very keen to be back in the saddle by the next morning. No need for extended mollycoddling, he described it as having the same level of discomfort and aftercare as a trip to the dentist

bagheera92 · 14/04/2023 16:39

Hi op, my partner had the snip at 10am and went to work as a chef at 3pm. He said it was quite achey. He had to wear tighty whiteys with a sanitary pad in to hood his testicles in place while he healed. About 3 weeks we had sex and he said it's stung quite a bit . But he said over all the most painful part was having his testicles numbed
