Emergency tax code

Anyone know how long it takes for a tax code to get sorted with a new employer?

It doesn't usually take long, as the information is sent online nowadays.

I would suggest that if you are still waiting for it to be sorted after say, six weeks (or two pay periods if paid monthly), get in touch with HMRC.

Brilliant thanks you. I only stared 5 weeks ago today so with Easter etc it's probably held up. I can see online on my hmrc gateway that my tax code is currently "unknown" so I'm thinking it's being sorted out behind the scenes. I was taxed heavily so I'm hoping it will resolve itself soon

I'd phone HMRC and ask them to look into it.

So I've just tried to phone but got some voice robot thingy that asks your query and it responded back with " before joining a lengthy wait, if your employment only commenced within 5 weeks or less to abort the call as it will be too soon and the advisor will not have the answer/ be able to help" so I am hoping it is in the process of getting sorted ?

On two occasions for me I've been taxed heavily month one but then its rectified next month

Oblomov23 · 13/04/2023 13:04

I'd phone back. Circumnavigate the bot questions, by saying yes to the it being more than 5 weeks. And then when you speak to someone you can say yes the employment is recent, but this / the original issue relates to a historic issue, older than 5 weeks.

Comefromaway · 13/04/2023 13:09

Are you paid weekly or monthly? We usually get tax codes through within a week of submitting the first RTI which is done before or on the day you are paid.

But does the tax code not relate to the fact that it's new employment?

Were you employed before? If so did you not have a P45? Did you fill in a New Starter Declaration?

GoodChat · 13/04/2023 15:37

It's a new tax year as well op so it's probably all a bit squiff. Should be sorted by the end of the month.

kitchenisthedream · 13/04/2023 15:38

@Comefromaway I filled in a new starter form as my p45 didn't arrived - should this have sorted it out before now?

Fingers crossed. It's so frustrating lol

Comefromaway · 13/04/2023 15:56

The New Starter form should have generated a temporary tax code on the payroll software assuming that you ticked the box saying that this is now my only job. The tax code would normally be something like 1257 M1 and the M! bit would have been taken off once the new tax year started. A BR tax code is rarely used these days, mostly for people who state they have another job or claim a pension etc.

Can you check with payroll that they entered your New Starter information correctly.

Comefromaway · 13/04/2023 15:57

A BR tax code is often used when the New Starter form hasn't been filled out

kitchenisthedream · 13/04/2023 16:00

My tax code is 0T currently so not sure what is going on. New starter form
Was filled out correctly

kitchenisthedream · 13/04/2023 16:02

Sorry cut post off.... this is my only job so I'm
Not sure if there's something going on or if it's just being slow to update

topcat2014 · 13/04/2023 16:11

If the starter form was filled out correctly seems like your payroll dept have got something wrong because they should use 1257L.

My guess is they put everyone on 0T for the first month.

(Which is wrong of course)

AlisonDonut · 13/04/2023 16:11

It is so early in the tax year you are unlikely to get a phone response at the moment as the lines will be full of people calling about last year's tax returns.

Did you give them a p45?

No p45 but filled in new starter form

It took 5 months. And that was ringing HR and HMRC monthly after my second paycheck. So, 3 sets of phone calls.
First month I rang HR to tell them they had my name wrong.....
Thankfully, the money wasn't essential. It was a very nice pay check when all the excess tax was refunded!

Took my boss 7 months when he started - but he was useless, and didn't ring anyone. It sorted itself in April........
