Scratchy noises in the loft at night

Looks like we have unwelcome guests in the loft 😩

What is it likely to be and does anyone know roughly how much it'll cost to evict the critters??

Oh no can you hear scampering??

EmmaGrundyForPM · 12/04/2023 04:43

possibly mice. How loud are they? My Mum had a squirrel in her loft, it was very loud! I can't remember how much she had to pay to get it removed.

Everydayshouldbe · 12/04/2023 04:43

could be: mice, rats, pigeons or squirrels. Probably £200 if you need to get pest control? Worth going up to look for droppings, if you can.

slytherinabout · 12/04/2023 04:45

Scampering and scratching. Bloody annoying. Had a broken boiler and a broken shower to pay for in the last few weeks. Could do without this too!

Oh dear, it never rains but it falls does it.

Are you on NextDoor? You could ask around, also Council. You have reminded me that I haven't reattached the loft hatch properly after it got blown off in a storm. Luckily I only have the occasional woodlice fall down so no squirrels or bats or other alarming things.

Hope it's not too painful ££

Op we had a mice this winter, what helped was the ultrasonic mouse repeller.

We had squirrels get onto the loft from a broken outside panel. Sounded a lot like you're describing. Had to get people in to deal with it as they do tremendous damage eating wires and such like. Good luck.

slytherinabout · 12/04/2023 05:12

Thank you everyone. I'll investigate when the kids are up. Fortunately we don't have any stuff in the loft so that's one thing to be happy about I guess!

If its like ours last year it turned out to be 2 nesting ravens in our chimney. Had to wait till they finished laying and growing there young till the chimney could be covered

Mumma · 12/04/2023 05:22

I once thought this but it was crows pulling moss off my roof and stomping about

slytherinabout · 12/04/2023 05:25

Chimney is at the other end of the house! I can't sleep now I know something's up there!

Could someone in your household have a secret scratch card addiction and they are creeping into the loft at night to scratch away undisturbed?

Really? 😂

SophieJo · 12/04/2023 06:21

We had this and it was squirrels. They had caused a lot of damage. Luckily we managed to block up the hole when they weren’t there.

stepfordwifey · 12/04/2023 06:21

We had the same. Very unnerving lying in bed listening to something running up your walls and in your loft.
We found mice droppings and shredded toilet roll in our downstairs loo. They were obviously preparing to nest there. It might be worth checking to see if you have them in any of your cupboards.
We bought traps and caught three mice before we filled a hole with silver foil as apparently they won't eat through it. No trouble since.

Badbudgeter · 12/04/2023 06:29

Do you have home emergency cover as part of your house insurance they normal cover pest control visits.

Don't go up there, don't you watch scary movies?😂
We had a rat in the attic, we bought a humane rat trap but decided neither of us were brave enough to go into the attic, ya know, into the unknown 🙄
Ended up calling the council, we're privately owned, they came out and put poison down, there was no fee.
The chap said they can get in by shimmying up the outside wall with their back against the downpipe, so if I were you I'd check for any gaps, when I say you, I mean send someone up there that you don't mind losing, a spare child, mil, sil etc 😂

DCINightingale · 12/04/2023 06:53

If you can hear scampering it could well be a squirrel. We have had them in our loft. Had to have a man out. Thankfully they scarpered at the sight of him so we blocked up the holes along the roofline and they have not returned.

More innocently could be birds nesting, keep a look out on the outside for any comings and goings.

slytherinabout · 12/04/2023 06:57

@Campervangirl this made me laugh out loud! Thank you ♥️

DoraChance · 12/04/2023 07:04

Check with your council first, ours only charges about £25 to treat for rats or mice.

Littlefish · 12/04/2023 07:48

We had squirrels! Bastard things. It ended up costing us £1400 to have our roof fixed to block up the area where they were getting in, and then £500 for an electrician because they'd chewed through all the electrics in the loft. Bastards.
