Anyone else feelin' the 50's pain? Menopausal aching, mood swings and other tortures which can only be solved with wine.. but then wine becomes your enemy..aagghh!! 😫

I hear you, 53 here. I'm sure I'm menopausal now; had major surgery in November and the only bleeding I've had was a very light period two weeks ago.

The restless, itchy legs have got worse.

Maybe joints have worsened, but I've had arthritis for years, predating perimenopause, (fusion surgery was what I had in November), so not sure it's related.

It's taken me ages to realise that the heat I get in my face (especially in bed), is a hot flush, as it hasn't followed literature on them I've read.

Last night insomnia was off the wall... I've never been able to sleep well, but I was still wide awake at gone 7am today, then got up at 10.30, so shattered.

I'm diagnosed Bipolar, but I swear my moods are affected by hormones (got worse in and following my pregnancies for example). Had hoped they'd go, but now I'm premenstrual 24/7.

Have you considered HRT? I was prescribed patches by my GP, but I cannot take them till a year after the last MP. I cannot get hold of him to tell him this, so suffering on for now.

You are not alone Flowers

Thanks for selling 50/to me😂
I'm 50 this year ,can't quite believe it tbh!

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 09/04/2023 14:40

I'll be 60 in a few weeks so 50 is looking great in hindsight. Sigh.

I'm 53, DH died at 54 and I've lost 3 friends in their 50s in the last 3 years. I'm grateful for every day, knowing plenty don't make it.

I had a tough couple of years around DH's illness and death, but I really am living my best life now. DC grown up, interesting job with a good level of autonomy, a confidence I've never felt before and the last couple of years have taught me who my friends are, those who are left are brilliant and I feel very fortunate. I have a busy social life and am fitter than I've ever been.

Menopause of course presents some difficulties, but I really do feel in my prime in terms of my ability to achieve things without worrying what anyone else is thinking.

Sunnysunbun · 09/04/2023 14:46

Yes but then I remember my two good friends who didn't make it to 50 and I suck it up and feel thankful. X

IglesiasPiggl · 09/04/2023 14:50

I am almost 50, and go back and forth with how I feel about it. I am enjoying not really caring how people judge me, being secure in my career and having older children so time for more hobbies etc. On the other hand, I struggle with insomnia and hate the fact that I am gaining weight and cellulite but not eating any more than I always have.

StaceySolomonSwash · 09/04/2023 14:55

I'm 54, when I stand up it's like the twenty-one gun salute as my joints protest. I've got the joys of night sweats/hot flushes plus insomnia - unless I've had a couple of drinks in which case I then get a banging hangover the next day. It's all fun. 😳

But as I've been to funerals of friends who were younger than me so I try to count my blessings that I wake up every morning!

OldTinHat · 09/04/2023 15:13

I was so excited to turn 50. I'm 51 now. I have chronic illnesses and am happy to wake up every morning.

Silkierabbit · 09/04/2023 15:28

I got cancer at 48 with a year's treatment (some of its 10 years) so was very glad to make it to 50. But its insomnia and aches and pains and mood swings. I'm sure its like any age though when you get 10 years older you think it was so good to be 10 years younger. 😂Though 40 was amazingly better than 50. I was fit, thin, beautiful hair which chemo destroyed, 2 breasts, 1 of which is currently chopped off, job I loved.

furryfrontbottom · 09/04/2023 15:52

It gets better after 60.

DustyLee123 · 09/04/2023 15:53

Ditch the wine and get on some good quality supplements. You dont need to put up with the aches.

PortiasBiscuit · 09/04/2023 15:54

Beats the alternative, hands down!

Fiftyisthenewsixty · 09/04/2023 16:10

Well this is my first day of being 50 and it's been alright so far!

lightlypoached · 09/04/2023 16:11

@PortiasBiscuit I agree.

I've lost friends in their early 50s and I know they'd love to be aging as I am.

That said, the wrinkles aching joints and rubbish memory are a bit shite. But hey Ho. 🤷‍♀️

Which supplements for aching joints do you suggest?

highfidelity · 09/04/2023 16:14

I'll be thankful to make 50 and any year thereafter as my mother did not.

Am also incredibly thankful that at 47, am already three years post menopause and on HRT, so feel a heck of a lot better both in myself and physically than I did from 39 to 44.

BeatriceFranklin · 09/04/2023 16:17

I’m 55, I don’t drink (and don’t miss it), we eat healthily and spend plenty of time outdoors. I often think I’ve probably got 20 years left of a reasonable quality of life (hopefully) so make the most of it.

Nimbostratus100 · 09/04/2023 16:18

I love being in my 50s its the best decade yet, so much personal freedom

MissingMoominMamma · 09/04/2023 16:19

Wine is definitely not your friend in your 50s, especially if you suffer from arthritis.

I’m loving my 50s. I’ve cut down a bit on work. Don’t feel like I need ‘stuff’ to be happy. Walking a lot more (two joint replacements have really helped- I climb mountains without pain now).

Friends are important to me; I make more time for them.

I’m just really enjoying travelling, feeling fit, being sociable…

I’ve just lost someone close to me, at 57. I’m making every day count.

Silkierabbit · 09/04/2023 16:20

I take the Wellwoman 50 supplements and they do stop the aches mostly, can't take HRT due to breast cancer. Also drink a lot of milk and swim a lot, not sure if those help. Never really drank alcohol.

devildeepbluesea · 09/04/2023 16:21

Turned 50 last guest. Not gonna lie, I’d rather be 30 but so far I’m grateful for relatively good health, strength, no meno symptoms, no arthritis, a decent job, an amazing DD and a total absence of hangovers 🤣

Carrying a bit too much lard though so have given myself til I’m 51 to sort that out once and for all.

Silkierabbit · 09/04/2023 16:25

Happy Birthday Fiftyisthenewsixty

YorkieTheRabbit · 09/04/2023 16:40

I’m pushing 56, yes the menopause has been far worse than I expected. Tried HRT for 18 months, different types and different strengths but I felt awful so gave up. Had another go after a couple of years and this time it’s way better.
As for aging in general, I’m fine with it, can’t see the point of chasing youth. I could do with losing weight but other than that 🤷‍♀️
I lost people in my life far younger than I am now so I think of myself as fortunate.

Goodread1 · 09/04/2023 16:41

Allmost 50 years of age,

I can't believe I have reached this age, really

It's a bit weird thinking about it

In a 👍 am OK sort of way
