Is there any way to thin down legs (obtain Pins) through diet and exercise

Just as the title asks- anybody know if this is possible and if so what should/shouldn't you be doing. Any success stories?

Totally depends on your starting point. And what your aim is.

You can’t spot reduce fat though. So you there’s no way to ensure fat only comes off legs only.

Lockheart · 06/04/2023 17:09

You can't spot reduce fat. You will need to lose weight generally and perhaps start a weights/resistance routine that focusses on the legs, like squats and thigh extensions.

ArseMenagerie · 06/04/2023 17:09

Lily Allen who is pin thin still shades on her legs! No hope for the rest of us. I’ve learned to tolerate mine by putting fab shoes on the end of them…

Zola1 · 06/04/2023 17:12

You can improve them generally by losing weight and taking up weights and/or pilates

whirlyhead · 06/04/2023 17:16

I’ve done reformer Pilates and yoga for years and still have stumpy legs. And I’m quite slim! I’ve decided it’s down to genetics and I’m stuck with them.

MaireadMcSweeney · 06/04/2023 17:24

You can get slimmer legs by losing body fat but remember you can't control where the fat goes from. You can shape your legs by exercising if you do squats and lifts.

The spot reducing seems out. I mean I absolutely need to lose weight anyway but even when I have been very thin my legs didn't follow suit entirely. They were ok but not slender ankles. I didn't know if it was to do with diet - salt intake maybe or some other magical trick I was missing.

Unfortunately the shape does seem to be determined mostly by genetics.

Yes, the shoes at the bottom can help I suppose but I don't want to draw attention to my lack of good ankle.

So squats helps it seems and I didn't know about weights at all, I'll look that up. Going on holiday in the summer with another family, my DH's friend's wife has pins and I'm dreading the pool with my contrasting leg shape.

Yes It is very frustrating as I think I have my Dad's legs which are good for Tennis playing. DD has luckily inherited her Dad's pins.

Check lipoedema. Wear compression. Then take up heavy deadlifting. Those are my only useful tips. Good luck.

If you lose weight and do some exercise then fat will go and muscles will arrive.

Whether you get the body shape of your dreams is another matter.

I am just so thrilled to be thinner I can ignore that it's not perfection.

EmmaEmerald · 06/04/2023 17:53

I should be on gransnet maybe
what leg shape are "pins"? Like ballerina style?

anonymouschef · 06/04/2023 17:54

Yes I lost 6 stone after I had my last baby to get my legs straight again
I've got a curve in them by the top and that is my bones. I still hate it,
Have disordered eating and I'm slim on paper but don't feel l look it. I weigh 44kg
It's not good but it's my way

Yes possible if you want it

Not healthy don't do it

Moredarkchocolateplease · 06/04/2023 17:57

Lunges in all of their variety.

Weighted.

Hold weights over head in outstretched arms and lunge forward and back.
Hold weights down by sides.
Reverse lunge.
Curtsey lunge
Forward lunge.
Split lunge/squat.

With as heavy a weight as you can hold to do a lot of sets consistently.

Then squats.

I am in my pre summer dress stage and summer dresses look significantly better with defined quads.

What do you mean shades on her legs?

wellhi · 06/04/2023 18:13

Another one here not sure what's meant by pins? Does it just mean slim legs?

carlybitmitoemam · 06/04/2023 18:22

Pins is cockney slang pin pegs = legs. It doesn't mean skinny legs it just means legs.
The shape is genetics but you might be able to improve slightly with weight loss and work outs. I've been fat and thin and always had proportionally slim ankles and wrists at any weight and whether I worked out or not.

I just meant ‘throw shade on them’ as in criticise them.

carlybitmitoemam · 06/04/2023 18:25

You can get lipo on cankles or have calf implants for 'chicken legs'

rosegoldivy · 06/04/2023 18:26

Along with diet I would recommend weight training
Exercises I would recommend

  • leg extention
  • leg press
  • hamstring curl
  • walking lunges
  • RDLs
  • Bulgarian split squats
  • calve raises

And rinse and repeat.

It can be a long process especially with weight training but you its defo possible.

I am sorry to read the challenges that the pursuit of this came with. I can relate to that feeling but it was when I was younger so early 20s.

Thank you for writing that in detail - really helpful. Yes, it is the summer dress that I want to look good in to. I go from thinking I can sort this to being thoroughly depressed about it all, Bridget Jones style diary entries of 'biggest I have ever been'. When I was in my 20s I went surfing loads, has the body to match, I have good shoulders and always had a flat stomach but even that is definitely history now. my legs were at the best during those years . I feel wrong for being so down about it, like I'm an incredibly vain person after all but I just know the holiday is going to be lots of towel coverage and feeling uneasy if I don't improve on this?
