What sandals to take to Rome in June?

I've never found Birkenstocks comfortable so they're ruled out.

Hoping to wear them in in advance, which is why I'm asking so early!

definitely well-cushioned ones - areas like the Forum are very tough on the feet

I did thong Fit-flops quite happily . Lots of cobbled streets so comfy soles are key. It was hot and you walk a lot but the middle of the city isn’t massive.

I like the new Saltwater sandals with the thick soles. I think they are called Swimmer. I've worn the original ones for years but these are so much more comfortable

Teva

Bared Footwear. Expensive but soooo beautiful and comfortable.

transformandriseup · 02/04/2023 21:06

I don't have any suggestions but they need to withstand the heat of the pavement as I remember the bottoms of mine melting in the summer in Rome.

TeaMistress · 02/04/2023 21:08

Skechers on the go sandals. Very comfy and machine washable.

Neverknowinglysensible · 02/04/2023 21:17

Nothing to suggest, but watching with interest for recommendations. Agree Birkenstocks in Rome are a bad idea. I took what I thought were a well worn in, and comfortable, pair last August. I ended up having to buy plasters, and then socks to keep the plasters on, in order to cover the most enormous and painful rub marks I have ever had.
And don’t get me started on the stupid rim to Birkenstock insoles that keep any loose stone picked up firmly inside the damn shoe! 🤬

Some really comfy walking sandals - I swear by Keens www.keenfootwear.de/en-gb/p/W-WHISPER.html . And make sure you have worn them in. Lots of walking!

Minster2012 · 02/04/2023 21:28

Salt waters. For anything really. I walked miles around cities in them, despite usually being terrible flat footed
They are so comfy

AnnaMagnani · 02/04/2023 21:33

The sort of sandals they sell in hiking shops.

Everyone was wearing them except idiot me comfort is far and away the most import thing for Roman cobbles.

imtheproblemitisme · 02/04/2023 21:34

Sketchers sandals might be my first try, thank you. I'm so looking forward to going and I will not be taken down by blisters!

How about tevas? Mine were great in Paris last summer in the heat and cobbles.

TeaMistress · 02/04/2023 21:45

I found the Skechers sandals coped well with the Florida heat and cushioned my feet. Epsom salt foot soak at the end of every day helped as well and lots of foot lotion.

MindPalace · 02/04/2023 21:48

Gladiators? 😉

🤣😂🤣😂

Svalberg · 02/04/2023 22:46

Ecco walking sandals, and I also found trainer socks in tights material helped to stop sticking or rubbing

cherrypied · 02/04/2023 22:48

Tevas for daytime purposeful schlepping

Saltwaters for an evening amble for an aperol - they gave me plantar faciiris after a day of wearing them. The swimmer might be better.

Teva are bomb proof.

i bought These in an emergency last summer, wore them all round two very hot cities, hiking in dusty hills, on the beach and out for supper!
they were so comfy and strong. I’ve just ordered some for Athens this summer.
And they are £10!!!

Until recently I used to go to Rome every summer for 5 very hot days for work reasons, on my feet from morning until late into the evening, walking on average at least 26k steps every day between all the tourist spots. I bought a pair of Tevas for the second trip and they have accompanied me on 3 subsequent trips to Rome and on hiking holidays in the USA and France. They are completely indestructible, the pair I have are plain & not fugly with a discrete sole / footbed and my feet have never even seen the smidge of a blister. The Skechers I bought for the first trip made my ankles swell.

SquashPenguin · 03/04/2023 08:00

They have to be broken in but I could climb a mountain in my Dr Marten sandals. I have very narrow feet and skinny ankles, so they give me all the support I need and are super comfy. Can’t underestimate how much they need to be broken in though 😆

Fraaahnces · 03/04/2023 08:01

For me it’s Dr Martens Flatforms, but they really fit my feet. Also Sorel sandals. (Even the ridiculous wedges are comfy, but not practical for schlepping all around the place on cobbles.) But they do have some sexy gladiator styles often 😁

AFlockOfTigers · 03/04/2023 08:02

Tevas. I find the more fashionable but fugly Originals less comfortable than the more expensive Tirras with the moulded sole.
