The world is insanely and dangerously overpopulated. In 1900, there were a billion humans. By 1960 that had trebled to three billion. By 2000 it was six billion. Today it's eight billion. Africans still have five children, on average, and the African population is going to double by 2050. It's ok for people like Mogg, with his live-in nannies and giant detached house. What about a poor woman living in a tin shack in Nigeria with six kids? How is she supposed to educate herself? Or build a career? Or simply live a quiet and civilised life? Family planning is the quickest way to cure poverty and misery, always has been.
Besides, with climate change poised to cause havoc, humans all over the world need to have fewer, not more, kids. The population of the UK is heading for 70 million. Essex, where I live, is hellishly overcrowded, and houses are being built on every scrap of free land. Imagine if the population of this island hits 80 million, or 100 million. Kiss goodbye to the green belt, that's for sure.
