LIDL bakery counter - I don't understand!

Is this not the most unhygienic way to sell bread and pastries? With no wrappers on and sitting in the open air. People breath all over the stuff and can handle it without buying. Even in the middle of the pandemic, the food had no covers on. And doesn't it go stale quicker, just sitting there with no packaging? I'm not a germaphobe my any means, but it always seems a bit....ODD.

But the Waitrose bakery is exactly the same; open so anyone can stick their hand in. Or is Waitrose ok because it has a better class of customer? sniff

Doesn't matter where it is, could be Fortnum & Mason or Harrods food hall, I don't fancy bread that has been in the snot line or touching with poopy fingers so don't buy it. Given the ingredients these days I don't fancy it anyway. My choice, if you like additions to your bread it's fine.

I used to work in a microbiology lab testing posh ready meals and sandwiches. I'd honestly be more worried about them than people breathing on bread rolls 🤣

Aside from which they are foul.
And meatballs with horse...

It's not just breathing though, it's spitting, sneezing, coughing germs type breathing as well. When you find hairs and bits of fluff from clothing in the icing on your bun, it's a bit off-putting.

Your fruit and veg has probably been shat on by birds or other animals...

Don't you wash your fruit & veg?
Do you also wash your bread?

Eggs come out of chickens' bottoms. Front or back I'm not entirely sure

Wow, I didn’t know that. Amazing what you learn on MN.

It's called a cloaca. Reptiles have them too.

I don't think it's just Lidl that have loose bakery items is it? They're usually inside enclosed shelves, with a hole at the front. Sainsbury's and Marks also have theirs loose, or do you just want a reason to turn your nose up at a bargain basement supermarket?

Our local Lidl provides tongs and have signs not to use hands, and not to eat before paying.

Of course this doesn't stop some grubby customers from using their hands to move the items at the front so that they can get "fresher" ones at the back. That's the thing with anything self service though.

In the 50's the bakery wasn't kept in heaps in plastic shelving units where people could maul it in droves.”

Shopped in Lidl for donkeys’ years, never seen droves mauling the baguettes.
Did the zombie apocalypse happen and I missed it? 😁

Yes I saw your post, DotAndCarryOne2 - probably not the wisest move as I'm just about to eat my lunch!! Confused
