LIDL bakery counter - I don't understand!

Is this not the most unhygienic way to sell bread and pastries? With no wrappers on and sitting in the open air. People breath all over the stuff and can handle it without buying. Even in the middle of the pandemic, the food had no covers on. And doesn't it go stale quicker, just sitting there with no packaging? I'm not a germaphobe my any means, but it always seems a bit....ODD.

You're aware that "bakery" wasn't invented by Lidl?

👏

Oysterbabe · 31/03/2023 11:40

There's a fancy pants bakery by me and all the stuff is just in a pile on the open counters. Generally bakeries don't have everything individually sealed in plastic.
Just give it a good wash with zoflora before eating and it will be fine.

CJFJ1 · 31/03/2023 11:43

Reading this thread has just prompted me to go out to Lidl and get myself a nice jam doughnut from the bakery aisle, which I got with the tongs.

nahnahnahnahnahnah · 31/03/2023 11:44

MrsSkylerWhite · 31/03/2023 11:06

It’s naive to think everyone uses the tongs. I do buy uncovered fruit and veg because I can wash them once home,”

Oh well, happy to be naive then. It’s actually quite difficult to get the goods out of the cubby holes without the tongs, impossible for a toddler.
We all know, no-one who uses/works in independent bakeries, Waitrose/M&S, etc. picks their nose …. 😁

It’s a better class of bogey in Waitrose and M&S though.

Pushmepullu · 31/03/2023 11:51

M&S do this too. Saw a couple of children with their gran picking up loaves smelling them, giving them a squeeze then putting them back on the shelf. Told a friend who is a manager there and he told me that lots of staff had highlighted this to head office who ignore their concerns about health and safety of selling products this way.

You do know that most supermarkets (even Sainsbury's) have a section like that, don't you?

I never buy anything from then because I don't nook who's coughed on it. And if I did I still wouldn't buy anything from them.

Not just any bogey . . . M&S excess nasal mucous . . .

Not sure why people are insisting it's normal - Gregg's baked goods are kept behind a glass partition as are most bakeries.

Greggs are shite, though. Well, the stories are good.

Our local Lidl has the bakery stuff in perspex drawers and I think that you'd have to be pretty determined to get your arm in and get a roll from the back!

I was in Sainsbury's a while ago, wanting some cheesy rolls. A woman was already there, about 50, well dressed and presented. She picked up every single roll, squeezed it and put it back, before leaving without taking any.

I just watched, horrified. I was about to leave when another woman went to get some. I said loudly, "No, don't get the cheese rolls, she's" (pointing at the offender) "just picked every one up, squeezed it and put it back!"

She said, "Eurrgh, ta!" and walked off.

SapphireSeptember · 31/03/2023 11:57

In my nearest Lidl I've seen people picking up pastries then putting them back down and not buying the ones they've already fondled. Envy If you touch it you buy it! I try and get the ones furthest back.

Redebs · 31/03/2023 11:57

Having seen kids poking and messing with some bakery items in Lidl, I only ever choose from the back of high up trays, or try to get them when they're straight out of the oven

In Lidl in Holland, they have the bakery section but all screened of with plastic and you use a long pair of rings to knock them off the shelf ( like in a fun fair) and they drop down for you to bag up. Much better.

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 31/03/2023 08:57

I know what you mean OP, all those people huffing and puffing like the big bad wolf over produce.

Better to wrap everything in plastic, no one gives a shit about the environment anyway, just as long as no one BREATHES near anything.

Frankly, I don't understand why shoppers just can't hold their breath.

@MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel

i would rather stuff was wrapped in paper or something

people do cough and sneeze without covering their mouths, their have their fingers in their gobs and then touch all the produce

gross

I do care about the environment but not enough to eat bread with random peoples spit on

MoggyP · 31/03/2023 12:00

The risk of being "breathed on" is happening directly the whole time you are in the shop and therefore inhaling all the effluvia from other people.

Risk from bakery counter is low, as stomach acid will deal with nearly every pathogen.

I hope you are however being consistent, and realising that every single thing and surface in the shop is just as contaminated by other shoppers exhaling and touching things, and that you are taking hygiene precautions (such as quarantining or using disinfectants on everything). And wearing a mask everywhere indoors except your own home.

Because it would be a bit illogical to fret about one pretty small risk if you're doing nothing to tackle the bigger ones.

slowquickstep · 31/03/2023 12:00

M&S is he same as is tesco and other supermarkets. If you can't cope don't buy them. Many 100,000s do every week and they haven't dropped down dead yet.

zeldarubinstein · 31/03/2023 12:01

I won't get anything from there...I once saw a woman on her knees ferociously rummaging through a basket of bread rolls with absolutely filthy hands, I now walk straight past the bakery bit!

LuckySantangelo35 · 31/03/2023 12:03

Why are people so gross??!

MrsRandom123 · 31/03/2023 12:06

Nindaelita · 31/03/2023 09:15

Fruits and vegetables?

i wash fruit & veg before eating it - i don’t wash bread or pastries 🙄

Nindaelita · 31/03/2023 12:06

Squiblet · 31/03/2023 09:53

Wait till OP hears about public transport... 😱

Wait until people in general hears about hotels 😏

MrsRandom123 · 31/03/2023 12:06

won’t buy in any supermarket where its open for anyone to touch (have seen kids dragging their hands along passing or picking up) i’ve no problem with “open air” say behind a counter or in a glass container that only staff touch but i thought it was grotty before covid & given how ott many people went about germs i’m surprised its still an option to “help yourself”

Train007 · 31/03/2023 12:07

love Lidl bakery . Bread so much tastier than other supermarkets. Tongs, plastic casing unit and gloves all provided. Think fruit and veg section in supermarket more unhygienic but a few germs are good for you .

Aldi does exactly the same

OP works for Aldi! 😉🤣
