Want to settle the stupidest argument ever?

DP and I are jet lagged and so are our toddler and newborn and as such we are having the stupidest whinge to each other.

DP saw that I had put my clothes in the top two drawers of the large chest of drawers, and started complaining about why does he always have to have the bottom ones.

I said because a- I was the first one to unpack so why would I choose the lowest ones, and b- in our last house he would just leave piles of clean and dirty clothes lying around on the floor and on top of surfaces and his drawers were mostly full of clothes he didn't even wear. I actually use my drawers.

He said that I should have the lowest ones because I'm a foot shorter than him so I have less distance to travel to get to them.

I said that's bollocks.

Who's being the most stupid here? (Yes, we both are, yes it's lighthearted, no I wont be moving my drawers)

You got there first, so I'd say you get to pick which you want, though it might've been charitable of you to take the top drawer and the third or bottom one.

You both have to bend down as much to get to the bottom drawers; "less distance to travel" doesn't apply here in the way that it might if you objected to him nabbing low shelves and leaving you only high shelves that you struggle to reach. You could equally argue that his arms are longer so he doesn't have to bend down as far as you do.

Xrays · 31/03/2023 08:33

You got there first. Finders keepers and all that. You snooze you loose…!

Xrays · 31/03/2023 08:34

*lose even!

Nimbostratus100 · 31/03/2023 08:35

tallest person gets the highest drawers and shelves - always!

AlisonDonut · 31/03/2023 08:37

Say 'next holiday you can have the top two if you never drop another item of clothing on the floor ever. Show me you deserve the top two drawers'.

I'm someone who lives straight out of the suitcase the whole holiday. I rarely even use the drawers.

LizzieSiddal · 31/03/2023 08:37

I’m a foot shorter than DH and always get the bottom draws and it does annoy me. However I also get the lowest shelves, so feel I have to take the rough with the smooth.

PuttingDownRoots · 31/03/2023 08:40

Person A gets the bottom and top.
Person B gets the two middle
Toss a coin to decide.

Shodan · 31/03/2023 08:41

Share each drawer and then every morning do a blindfolded 'lucky dip' to choose your clothes every day. You have to wear what you first touch and pull out of the drawer.

Yup, "down by my feet" is as inconvenient for a 5' person as it is for a 7' person. Whereas a shelf that's 7' up is a lot easier for a tall person to see and get to.

I can't believe the petty things people argue about Grin ... I know you said it was lighthearted but if I was lucky enough to be on a holiday (& jet lagged so presumably somewhere far away) I wouldn't want to waste time arguing!!

This.

Why not just share?

So top drawer for u does and costumes

Second drawer for t shirts

Etc...

BrimFullOfAsher · 31/03/2023 08:46

I think you should take half of each drawer 😁

Everyone is a winner (and loser) then.

Genius!

discobrain · 31/03/2023 08:53

I'd just tell him that whining is so unattractive, and to suck it up.

Justmuddlingalong · 31/03/2023 08:54

DP uses "the chair method" on holiday. I have all the drawers.

mrsm43s · 31/03/2023 08:57

Are you on holiday or have you moved house?

If on holiday, just leave all your clothes in the suitcase and go out and do something more fun!

If you've moved home and this is a long term thing, then buy two smaller chests for drawers rather than one large one.

LilylilyDaisy · 31/03/2023 08:58

Is the argument just about drawers or is it an expression about "selfishness" though?

I went out with a guy once who always seemed to pick the best for himself. ie if we went to a restaurant, he would always make sure he had the better seat - the one facing out into the room instead of with his back to the room. He would pick the nicer mug for himself, the comfy seat instead of the harder seat, the chair that didn't wobble etc and he couldn't/wouldn't take turns or swap or offer me the choice, once claimed (and he was good at getting in early) it was his and that was that. So it might have manifested itself as any of these seemingly petty annoyances but it was symbolic of him always making sure he got the nicer or easier option. "You snooze, you lose" isn't working as a team. Perhaps say that next time he can have the top drawers. Share the better option between you. Or he can have the top drawer, you have the next one down.

addler · 31/03/2023 08:59

We've actually emigrated so not as temporary a situation as a holiday! And there's just stuff everywhere and I wanted to put things away sooner rather than later so we can get around the room without tripping and dropping the baby, whereas DP likes to take things slowly (and then complain when he wants to go to bed at 8pm and there's still crap all over the bed).

But also- share a drawer?! Shock I could never! Heathens!

As the parents of two children you should know the answer to this:
if you can't play nicely then neither of you can have it.

Now based on this, I would still take the top drawers and the lower shelves.

The first person to the drawers gets to choose - everyone knows that

That's not fair though is it! Smile What if the second person has been taking suitcases out of a taxi, helping the kids search for a toy or finding them a drink, opening the windows to let out a musty smell or some other such general task that benefits others or the family, which has allowed the first person to go straight to the bedroom and choose the best side, the best drawers and the best wardrobe space?

WandaWonder · 31/03/2023 09:46

If the man took the top drawers I bet the replies would be different

I tend to unpack first with clothes so usually work it out as evenly as possible

Dh deals with my precious chocolate stash and whatever weird food he brings first

You snooze, you lose.

I can see you’ve given this a lot of thought Grin

Pixiedust1234 · 31/03/2023 10:01

Tell him that although you are shorter you actually have longer legs than he does so the pivot point is higher, therefore you need the top drawers. My DH is 7 inches taller than me overall but my hips are higher than his.

No idea if this is true for you but in his tired state it will takes him ages to ponder Grin
