Where's your airer?

Where do you dry your clothes?
I got rid of my tumble dryer as it was costing a fortune! Now I have 2 airers which seem to be up all the time! When I go in other people's homes ( no massive spacious mansions with laundry rooms) they don't have them , so where are they drying their clothes?

In my dining room, next to the radiator. I move them outside if it’s warm and sunny.

Howtolikeit · 31/03/2023 07:54

I don’t do this (no room), but my friend has her airer in a cupboard with a dehumidifier. She says it’s cheaper than a dryer and pretty quick!

icelollycraving · 31/03/2023 07:56

I have two tumble dryers, one in kitchen, one in garage and a heated airer on landing. Even then, the laundry is never caught up with 😩

Hmmthatsgoodchicken · 31/03/2023 07:57

Outside when it is dry. Then in at about 5 to put on the heated airer in my bedroom (because it's the biggest room in the house). Heated airer and dehumidifier on for upto 4 hours depending on dampness.

On a wet day. It just goes on the heated airer with the dehumidifier on as well. The amount of water that comes out is amazing.

We have a bath that’s hardly ever used as we use the shower . We have an airer that clips to the sides , and makes a triangular shape , it’s great for lightish items , shirts undies etc
for jeans and towels I have a sturdy traditional airer , which goes in bathroom when needed ,

Howtolikeit · 31/03/2023 08:17

(Also your friends probably move their laundry into another room before you get there - I do when I have people coming over!)

Notanothernewname · 31/03/2023 08:17

In my study. I once said to my boss "what you can't see in Teams calls are the airers full of drying clothes and the pile of junk in the corner". He commented his is the same!

On dry days and in the summer it's outside. When people visit it's put away.

In the hall, we have two in almost constant use. When everything is dry it goes upstairs to a huge mountain of dry washing on the landing, the kids rummage through it like animals, and eventually on a Friday or Saturday I fold it all up and put it away. I do it that way because otherwise I am folding laundry constantly. Occasionally dh will do a mid week fold.

Utility room with a dehumidifier

MajorCarolDanvers · 31/03/2023 08:19

Utility room and used for clothes that can't be tumble dried.

Sunshinealwaysfollowstherainstorm · 31/03/2023 08:23

Utility room.

We have a wall mounted one that closes against wall when not in use. We positioned it high on wall so as the heat rises, it dries quickly. Only use it for things that can't go in dryer.

In warmer weather, everything out on rotary line in garden.

aibutohavethisusername · 31/03/2023 08:26

One in the hall and one in the living room.

dementedpixie · 31/03/2023 08:26

We have a room upstairs with the computer in and there are 2 airers in there too

toomuchfaster · 31/03/2023 08:29

On the ceiling in the hallway. Rotary one in the garden when the weather allows.

DutchCowgirl · 31/03/2023 08:40

Spare bedroom…
you should combine it with a dehumidifier, if you don’t the humidity in the air can make it more costly to warm the house. It can get more expensive than the costs of a dryer that way.

MiniTheMinx · 31/03/2023 08:43

Old fashioned Sheila maid in the stairwell. It's hoisted up out of sight. Heat rises so it dries overnight.

AuntiePhoenixClaw · 31/03/2023 08:44

I have one that is built on top of tall larder cupboards and can be pushed back out of sight. DH made it out if extendable chrome poles. It’s totally hidden when not in use. Hangers are hung from it. I have a little airer on the top landing for small items.

SnarkyBag · 31/03/2023 08:47

used to have a massive utility room with ceiling airers but have moved to a smaller place. I can’t bare having airers in living spaces it’s driving me crazy so am in the process of building a drying cupboard that will house 2 airers and a large dehumidifier.

Cuwins · 31/03/2023 08:51

Ours are always out no point taking them down and nowhere to store them folded anyway. We have 2: a big one in our bedroom and a over bath one in the main bathroom, sometimes that one is empty in which case it's folded against the wall in the bathroom but you would definitely see it if you used the toilet in my flat. The one in the bedroom you probably wouldn't see unless the door was open.
When it's really warm the big one sometimes goes on the balcony but not sure that will work this year with a toddler.

FTMUM2023 · 31/03/2023 08:51

Moves around depending what room we are using lol because it’s so annoying being in the way! I always think clothes hanging out to dry look like mess and it’s a reminder that it’s a chore that still needs done. I try to help my head with this by organising how it is arranged - ie tshirts together, socks together in pairs etc etc. I always wash separate colours too so that helps it look a bit neater lol

Xanadu58 · 31/03/2023 08:51

One upstairs in the spare bedroom and I've got a second one which I use in the conservatory if needed. It stays folded behind a chair when not in use .

whataboutnow · 31/03/2023 08:56

We never use the downstairs loo but it gets really warm in there when the heating is on so has become my drying room . Airer fits in there nicely . Everything goes outside once the weather warms up.

1down · 31/03/2023 22:24

Putting them upstairs seems like a decent idea. Free up the living area.
I suppose we spend less Time awake upstairs!

In my dining room.
If people come into my home, they'd come into the lounge or kitchen, so wouldn't generally see what is on the airer.

<Another reason why open plan doesn't really work for family life, IMO>

summerfinn · 31/03/2023 23:18

In the dinning room
