Tell me about Whitby

DH and I are going there for a few days' break in early July. We'd love some suggestions of places, museums & shops to visit, and we are staying at a B&B so would also like recommendations of good restaurants/pubs in the evenings. Happy to do plenty of walks too. Can you really find pieces of jet on the beach?

If you go to Goathland be prepared for the racist window display in one of the shop windows. It's full of "Gollies".
🙄

Why the eyeroll? It exists, or at least it did a few years ago, and yes those "dolls" are racist.

704703hey · 01/04/2023 15:10

I've never been there but some of this sounds quite charming

ClaraThePigeon · 01/04/2023 15:13

Goathland is lovely otherwise though.

ISpyCobraKai · 01/04/2023 15:26

Great thread, I'm going next month for a couple of days and really looking forward to it.

Well, quite.

York had a good few gollies in its shop windows until fairly recently; might even be some still around. Yes, they are racist, and I find them extremely distasteful, and they reflect nothing good on their sellers not least placing them 40 years behind the times.

I wouldn't avoid an entire locality on the basis that certain shops were selling an offensive item. This isn't a reflection on Goathland or York. But also, I'd by no means enter or spend money in those particular outlets.

Neither would I but some people might choose to avoid it for their own valid reasons. And there isn't much to Goathland so it's hard to avoid seeing them. It was rather an unpleasant shock for me and I'd rather people knew about it in advance.

CuriousMama · 02/04/2023 13:57

They used to sell gollies in Keswick toyshop. Had loads of them. It isn't there now. I have a neighbour who collects them 🙄

Do you know what, I think I went in that shop in Keswick about 20-odd years ago when dc was a toddler. I complained to the person behind the counter and told them they shouldn't be selling them any more. We'd only gone in there because there was a display of Beanie Babies in the window, and they were a big collectable thing at the time. Funny I should remember that after all these years.

Hard to forget as they had so many. Keyrings and everything! I wonder what they did with them all when they closed?

motherofawhirlwind · 03/04/2023 18:36

Me again!

If you've got a car, Beacon Farm is the best for ice creams. They have a parlour just outside Whitby where you can see the dairy herd, but also vans in various spots, including on the cliff at Sandsend. But a lemon top from the East Side is also good.

And for parking - use the park and ride, or earlyish up at the Abbey and walk down.

Someone said the beach was chilly. The water is fecking freezing! It's a north facing bay, after all! DD grew up thinking wetsuits were mandatory on all UK beaches Grin Mind you, she's always cold so did her no harm.

twolilacs · 04/04/2023 14:59

@motherofawhirlwind Oh I'm all too familiar with the frigid waters of the North Sea, and that easterly wind that cuts you in half and sandblasts you at the same time.... I'm taking my thermals as well as my sun hat and flip flops!

When I went there we went to another chippy as coach driver told us it was just as good. Very near to the Magpie but cannot remember the name. Just remember the portion sizes! Phew! I only ate chips then, not the fish.

Leftoverssandwich · 04/04/2023 17:07

I hope a casual reader of this thread will have gathered that the Magpie is not the only place to get fish and chips in Whitby. There are quite a lot of good options. We went to Trenchers last time we were there which was excellent and no queue at all.

motherofawhirlwind · 05/04/2023 07:04

We often joke that you pack for all four seasons, even in August!

girlmeetsboy · 11/04/2023 18:59

Just booked for September :-)

OP here coming back to the thread to say I am packing winter and summer clothes and everything in between right now and we are travelling up to Whitby tomorrow. Thank you so much to everyone who commented on the thread, you have given us so many ideas, suggestions and places to eat & drink.

Just one question.... kippers. If we buy some on the morning we leave, will they be okay with a longish journey, or will they stink the car out and have to be chucked when we get home?!

It won't be cold. Just take light clothing maybe a cardi if you feel the cold. Rain jacket and brolly. I live by the sea just up the coast and it's not jumper weather.
Kippers stink but you could maybe try taking ziplock bag?

CuriousMama · 09/07/2023 00:28

The kippers won't go off they're smoked.

Hotpinkangel19 · 09/07/2023 01:07

My favourite place in the world.

KaitlynFairchild · 09/07/2023 01:46

As long as it's not too warm in the car the kippers should be fine for a few hours. They will scent your car with their delicious perfume for a few days afterwards.

Have a wonderful holiday.

Rossannah · 09/07/2023 02:24

No advice other than what has been said. Please don't tell anybody if you've had a good time, we want to keep it to ourselves 🤐

Michaelschenkersguitar · 09/07/2023 05:46

Lol. Most of yorkshire knows about it.

BarbaraofSeville · 09/07/2023 06:50

Indeed, and don't forget Teeside too. I've been on wet weekdays in November and while it's not been overly busy, there's been plenty of people there.

Add in decent weather (and remember that this is northern England so the bar is quite low) or a weekend or BH and it's standing room only and you'd have to be at the fish and chip shop well before noon if you don't want to wait for 30 mins plus.

TheresBoozeInTheBlender · 09/07/2023 10:38

Haha, as if Whitby is a secret 🤣

We love the magpie, but not for fish and chips. Their curry sauce is weird. Seafood though is lovely. You're there all week, you might as well try it. And we have always found a space in the car park just over the bridge, sometimes waiting 5 mins. It's about £6 for 24 hours

twolilacs · 04/07/2024 21:07

Hi all, resurrecting this thread as we are going to Whitby again very soon. We loved it last year and investigated a lot of your recommendations. Does anyone have suggestions for a nice pub or similar that does a good Sunday roast please?
