Tell me about Whitby

DH and I are going there for a few days' break in early July. We'd love some suggestions of places, museums & shops to visit, and we are staying at a B&B so would also like recommendations of good restaurants/pubs in the evenings. Happy to do plenty of walks too. Can you really find pieces of jet on the beach?

Well this is timely. I'm going to Whitby tomorrow, have rented a house and adult DC are coming too.
I'm normally a Scarborough fan and our only previous trip to Whitby was disappointing. However it was a family vote and so I'm going with an open mind.
I love staithes and runswick bay.
Will call at goathland en route. I've just watched some old episodes of heartbeat.

Not a great fan of fish and chips and DC are veggie so I've pre-booked some restaurants and hopefully do a boat trip weather permitting.

Hi all, resurrecting this thread as we are going to Whitby again very soon. We loved it last year and investigated a lot of your recommendations. Does anyone have suggestions for a nice pub or similar that does a good Sunday roast please?

Sneaton castle is a bit pricey but honestly it was the best Sunday lunch I've had out for a long time (excepting where I work of course - don't work in Whitby though!).
There's also The Lion Inn at Blakey Ridge but that's a bit of a drive but a beautiful place over the moors.
@Perr if you like Runswick and Staithes try Port Musgrave, Skinningrove and Cowbar, they're smaller and not a lot there but very picturesque.

Agree with @AlmostWhitby that Sneaton Castle is good (and has very entertaining decor).although we went for dinner rather than Sunday lunch. Pricey though.

I also love Bothams' cherry Bakewell slices, and pastries from a lovely (more modern) bakery on the other side of town that I can't remember the name of, a few doors down from the Whitby Bookshop.

The church up near the abbey is fascinating - I loved it - and there's some good hippyish shops in town that I enjoyed wandering round.

The Pannett Park museum is really excellent, and the Captain Cook one looks great too - wish we'd had time for that.

There's some good pubs in RHB - the one at the top of the village (maybe The Grosvenor?) does excellent pub grub, sort of 90s style but just very well done and great value. Very nice staff too.

Ghost walk in RHB (with Rose) is sort of entertaining but won't be to everyone's taste.

Thank you, we are driving up tomorrow (6+ hours plus breaks), so we would prefer to have Sunday lunch in Whitby itself rather than have to drive somewhere else. Looking for a pub/carvery roast really.

trip advisor ? Loads of reviews on there.

girlmeetsboy · 05/07/2024 14:19

I would highly recommend the White horse and griffin for a lovely roast!

twolilacs · 05/07/2024 14:19

@Michaelschenkersguitar I was looking for personal recommendations from locals

Half the town is full of second homes nowadays 😂 changed so much !

Well maybe regulars then. Always one that has to be awkward.

I haven't had Sunday lunch but we liked the food and daytime atmosphere on a weekend at Abbey Wharf

Us too, we ate there last week on a weekday around 5pm so didn’t have a roast but there’s a lovely atmosphere, if the sun is out, a table on the balcony is nice

Love Whitby - you'll be there for the only time it is ever quiet - when the football is on tomorrow night!

Whitby bookshop is lovely, but the staircase is terrifying. Abbey wharf is great, they do really good seafood - mussels are amazing there. Lobster hatchery is interesting, if a bit expensive for the size of it. Generally though as others have said it's just nice to potter about.

twolilacs · 05/07/2024 17:37

Thanks for the Sunday lunch suggestions folks, we will investigate those.🙂
