Does bio oil actually work???

I've got a few scars I would like to reduce the appearance of but bio oil is expensive and I'm loathe to buy it if it doesn't work. I know everyone's skin is different but generally is it effective??

I can tell you it didn’t stop me from getting stretch marks! I’ve not tried using it on a scar though.

No, it's the greatest marketing con of all time. They've even managed to make large numbers of health professionals tell people it works.

They have absolutely no data to say it works. Stretch marks naturally fade with time anyway even if you do nothing and massage (with anything at all) might help that along a bit quicker.

There is evidence for using silicone sheets or tape on scars.

maxillofacial dr dd was under recommended silicone sheets for her scar but I’ll be honest she hasn’t used them regularly so I can’t say they worked, we found them on Amazon

Try Boots scar serum - it worked beautifully for me on a nasty burn scar

No it's bollocks and anecdotal evidence. I wasted money on it as a student desperate to get rid of stretch marks from gymnastics and I used it religiously for 6 months and it did naff all. I am still angry that I was stupid enough to waste all that money on it.

The only thing proven to work on scar reduction is silicone sheets or gel. The NHS dermatologist that DD saw told us that and prescribed some.

I used it for 3 pregnancies and have zero stretch marks. It’s pricey but actually lasts a long time and really does make skin softer.

It is mineral oil, so not actually good for your skin. You would be better off buying the same price olive oil and use drops of that!
Olive oil is amazing.
Then try the scar reducing stuff boots sells.
Bio oil is a complete con.

Bio oil doesn't work, Palmers scar serum does though.

It won’t help scars or stretch marks as these occur in the deeper lays of skin that bio oil would never touch. It’ll make your skin soft though

Nope. Dc had scarring and the pharmacist recommended vitamin e moisturiser which hasn't done any harm and it's faded

I used silicone sheet on my scars after TKR and the scar is still there but perfectly smooth

I heard one report on R4, the gist of which was, it’s the gentle rubbing that helps heal the scaring and the oil is a very pleasant lubricant. Not sure if it works on old scars, but no harm in trying and it does make your skin scented and nice and soft.

Palmers cocoa butter will gradually fade scars over time and has the benefit of smelling like chocolate!

I have quite a significant scar on my face. I tried it while healing, it did nothing. Didn’t help stretch marks either.

I absolutely love bio oil and it is the one product I always always always have in my house.... but I don't think it's a scar treatment and definitely not for stretch marks. I can see it helping for relatively fresh scars on the basis that it helps the skin to be soft and hydrated and prevents some.of the pulling and stretching etc but arguably, any good product would do that.

It does wonders for things like the little rash you get under your nose when you have a cold and using it as a bath oil makes my skin super soft and hydrated (it also soothes my nerves in a way I cannot explain but rely on when I am feeling stressed. Its like it smoothes all my nerve endings, ridiculous though that obviously is). I smooth it onto ds's hands when he us sleeping because they get so dry and sore they bleed- and he wakes up with hands that are much less sensitive.

It's amazing. But it's not a miracle scar remover.

Its good for making you slip on your arse in the bath!! Can't say it did much to my stretch marks. Maybe just faded them slightly that's all
