Cornwall in the snow!

Blueyfan123 · 25/03/2023 20:00

We have our holiday of the year booked for the Easter break in Cornwall. Forecast at the moment is heavy snow. What is there to do to keep kids entertained in the snow in Cornwall?

In my school cornwalls the poor man’s choice most people go abroad, more exciting and appealing. But I guess they do say Cornwall is expensive just don’t get the appeal what with the unpredictable weather!

What a twatty comment. I'm very well travelled and can perfectly see the appeal of (the not very cheap at all) Cornwall. I'm going to Wales and Northumberland in April. Do I get double povvo points for that?

One of my favorite places on the planet (and I've seen a lot of it), is Scotland. Holidaying in the UK is far from the poor man's choice - it's expensive :-/

Quornflakegirl · 25/03/2023 21:19

Certainly not a poor man’s holiday! We can go to Spain or Portugal for cheaper than a week in Cornwall!

Architectahoy · 25/03/2023 21:21

Our trip to Sardinia is cheaper than Cornwall including flights

transformandriseup · 25/03/2023 21:24

There better bloody not be, we've only just turned the heating off. Heavy snow in Canada more like.

Blughbablugh · 25/03/2023 21:32

As someone mentioned upthread. If you put Cornwall UK in to bbc weather it brings up Canada. You have to search a specific place in Cornwall UK. I just searched St Ives and its coming up with low teens and definitely no snow.

Whatthefuck3456 · 25/03/2023 21:44

Just got back from Cornwall absolutely freezing but there is so much to do. The scenes are amazing too! Why have I not been before

FannythePinkFlamingo · 25/03/2023 21:55

I'm in Cornwall. No sign of snow here at all. Planning my weekly dip in the sea tomorrow and a camping trip 'down west' over Easter. It ain't gonna snow.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 25/03/2023 22:30

@Blueyfan123 you're not alone. My colleague once booked flights from Birmingham to Toronto. They were surprisingly cheap. Birmingham, Alabama...

Blueyfan123 · 26/03/2023 11:46

Oh my goodness! I’m such an idiot! Almost cancelled our holiday on this basis 😳

For those saying why going to Cornwall:
my step daughter (6) lives down there and it’s easier to see her in colder months as we can afford to stay. Prices in summer are astronomical!
Also Cornwall is beautiful and one of the best places in the UK
💕

£1600 for a week in a caravan in summer. A poor mans choice?!

Had the best Christmas ever near Jamaica Inn in the snow many years ago. Got the last bottle of fizz and the last boneless turkey joint from the nearest supermarket and hunkered inn with a lovely open fire. Lovely memory.

Cupcakequeen75 · 26/03/2023 12:09

As kids we did 2-weeks in Cornwall at Easter and 3-weeks in the Summer.
Caravanning on the Lizard peninsula, they were idyllic holidays and they must have been successful as we all looked forward to going every year.

BrutusMcDogface · 26/03/2023 12:11

I had heavy snow in Cornwall when I lived there! Everyone was just amazed as usually it’s much milder in Cornwall than elsewhere in England. It’s absolutely stunning and I love it- and have also seen a fair bit of the planet!

lol @Blueyfan123 though- glad you didn’t cancel your holiday!

That's where we're staying! Any must-dos you can recommend? (Especially if raining). We've not been further South than Truro before so although happy to drive back towards that way for our usual days out, we wanted a few more local attractions.

Movinghouseatlast · 26/03/2023 12:26

Look up Green Apples Cafe. There are some lovely coves on The Lizard, even in the rain they are great to explore.

'The poor man's choice'?

Wow. What snobbery.

Have you ever been to Cornwall?
It is stunning. Just beautiful, and so much more to it than the weather.

I know. Disgusting comment. As if everyone has the option. Plus imo Cornwall is very expensive. We go to Devon every easter and its lovely. Wonderful walks, beaches, rivers, beautiful old pubs for lunch and peace and quiet. We couldn't afford to go in the summer holidays and tbh im not sure I would want the crowds.
Mumsnet is so condescending and privileged sometimes. 🙄

OP, you are looking at the BBC forecast for Cornwall, CANADA.

Well thank christ for that!! I was about to put the shovel and boots in the boot of the car, so I can dig my way up the A30 when I pick up the eldest from London!! Phew!!! 🤣

The Northumberland coast is amazing, its still one of my most favourite holidays. Have fun x

That's where I'm off to the week after Easter. Haven't been back for years and really looking forward to it.

Stillbloodyraining · 26/03/2023 12:36

Hi OP, from the Lizard you will be close/ish to the Cornish Seal Sanctuary at Gweek, Flambards theme park in Helston, Falmouth (National Maritine Museum, Pendennis Castle, beaches), Via Ferrata in Penryn (climbing in an old quarry with a fabulous cafe), Marazion and St Michael's Mount (think you need to book the mount in advance and it's only open on certain days), the Minack Theatre (and stunning beach) at Porthcurno, Geevor Tin Mine at Pendeen, Lands End (just to say you've been, its quite tacky apart from the views) you could walk from Sennen Cove, Cape Cornwall (cove, hot chocs etc in car park or at the golf club) St Ives (get the park and ride train from St Erth).

There is Go Karting and Paradise Park in Hayle, Country Skittles just outside Hayle, wildlife spotting boat trips from Penzance (Mermaid or Marine Discovery), swimming at the Jubilee pool in Penzance if it's nice weather, sand dunes/beaches in Hayle and Gwithian. You can park at Godrevy (NT) and walk round the cliff path to a nearby cove where there are often LOADS of seals on the beach. Tehidy Woods (again a nice tea room).

Sorry for epic list but there is plenty to do, you'll have a fab time.

My mum booked a holiday the once in Torquay, she rang me up all shocked saying it's going to be 28 degrees!! Later that day the holiday company actually called her up and checked she did know she was booking Torquay in Australia ?! 🤣🤣

I, like another poster, saw on the news about a dreadful fire in Bellingham which is not far from Me
Only it was Bellingham, Washington State, USA
