Cornwall in the snow!

Blueyfan123 · 25/03/2023 20:00

We have our holiday of the year booked for the Easter break in Cornwall. Forecast at the moment is heavy snow. What is there to do to keep kids entertained in the snow in Cornwall?

Have a super time in non snowy Cornwall, you have taken your gentle ribbing in such good humour, OP.

In my school cornwalls the poor man’s choice most people go abroad, more exciting and appealing. But I guess they do say Cornwall is expensive just don’t get the appeal what with the unpredictable weather!

My god, what a snob! I'm guessing you live in Bolton? That's a shithole haha

An all inclusive week in Magaluf.

Snow or no snow you’d get a warmer welcome in Cornwall Canada.
😁😁

I’ve just had to sheepishly tell DH (who has been preparing clothes suitable for snow and snacks in case we get marooned) my mistake 😳

No, most of us Cornish welcome the tourists.
We know we have a beautiful place to live and we are happy to share.
Of course it also keeps a lot of the locals in work.

There are certain towns who have a minority who are less welcoming.....but on the whole I think we are a friendly bunch.

Tourists get a very friendly welcome in the village I live in. Please do stop touting this absolute rubbish.

Completely agree. Love it in the summer, where I am has a really nice atmosphere when tourists are here.

We really don't mind if people north of Launceston come and visit!!

Cornwall is gorgeous! There is so much to see and do. Sure, go abroad if your objective is to lie on a beach and tan.

OP if you're anywhere near Polperro, investigate the tidal pool in the cliffs at low tide. Might be too cold for you for swimming, but there's a shallow part where you can paddle up to the ankles. It's a lovely walk/easy scramble and you can Maggs it a circular route from cliffs to harbour.

I guess it js only not as expensive if family are taking you there and you’re sharing the costs for a wedding or something then that makes sense but tbh it’s STILL cheaper than say a family of 4 buying plane tickets and going aboard FACT!

KindergartenKop · 26/03/2023 16:44

I made a similar mistake once when visiting a town in the UK which has an identically named town in Jamaica. I was excited that it was going to be 34c for a whole week!

Are you OK? 😂

@WashAsDelicates
im sure it is beautiful I’m not denying it but in summer it makes more
sense PLUS as my DH says it only feels like a proper holiday it’s abroad
AND NO that doesn’t mean lying on a beach all day there are so many beautiful places and cultures to see in the world

DorritLittle · 26/03/2023 18:57

This thread made me chuckle. Glad there is no snow forecast OP!

Also I am by no means poor and I am blowing the budget with my week in Cornwall at May half term.

Boltonn · 26/03/2023 18:58

@DorritLittle
if you were going and sharing with family/friends (accommodation etc) I’m sure you wouldn’t be blowing it

And there is so much to see in the UK, too. Don't get me wrong, I love going abroad, but it is just rude to describe holidaying in the UK as the poor man's destination. Do not denigrate the beauty, culture, history, adventure, relaxation and refreshment that there is to be found in the UK. You can even get a tan in the UK. Sometimes.

For those wondering what to do!

We have Telegraph Museum which is SO cool and very interactive (similar to Science Museum actually)

Eden Project obviously

Maritime Museum in Falmoutth

Today we had epic hot chocolates and cakes at a harbour side cafe. Super quiet but lovely in between the showers.

Beaches are empty and on a nice dry day. Pack an extra blanket, flask of hot drink and a pasty - sit, rest and enjoy.

If its mizzle, drizzle or pissing it down - drive to one of our headland car parks with your fish and chips - and watch the epic stormy Atlantic seas.

Sunny, chilly, calm day? Try paddleboarding! Cycle!

Or walk the endless coast path and discover nooks and crannies, private beaches, take a book? Have a sit and feel completely alone. Switch off from the big noisy world.

Bring your National Trust memberships and enjoy rainforest style gardens, beach carparks for free and beautiful old houses like Lanhydrock. (Also suitable for kids and their bikes!)

I struggle with SAD and it's especially horrid in the winter months but even I can see the beauty behind the rain.

If all else fails, put Poldark on and fantasise about Ross 🤣

I'll add..
Visit any cliff top/beach pub/hotel and storm watch.
Wrap up warm and walk on the beach in the rain with or without a dog or two... it is exhilarating .. and when you get home it's lovely having hot chocolate and getting warm again with the smell of wet dog...
Can you tell I live here?

I think your DH is very narrow minded.

I guess it depends what your budget is. I suppose our holiday is cheaper than an all inclusive or a week seeing the sights in Italy. But we spent £200 less to stay at a similar site in France last May, including our ferry. Plus if it is anything like Dorset an ice cream will cost twice as much as Wales and parking six times as much! I love Cornwall and am happy to be going but it is in my view definitely not cheap.
