iPhone help pleeeeease

StonwEd · 24/03/2023 08:07

I've inherited an iPhone 12, great lovely whatever.
Been Android since the dawn of time so obvs there's gonna be some getting used to BUT despite it being SIM unlocked, and despite it saying it is corrected to talk mobile, I cannot for the love of god connect for data, calls etc.
I've googled it, I've asked my 17 year old. I'm off on to work where there are a number of youngsters who may be able to help but is it just a case of over 40s shouldn't have iPhones???
Can anyone understand what I mean?
Please help me, I'm carrying three phones around (broken phone, work phone, iPhone, absolutely ridiculous)

Screenshot is pointless. If over 40s shouldn't have iphones, why can't your 17 year old help you? Don't be so stupidly ageist, it's not doing you any favours.

tealgate · 24/03/2023 08:14

Just go to an Apple Store, they'll sort it all out for you.

SoupDragon · 24/03/2023 08:14
  1. is "network selection" automatic? (mine is and everything works!)
  2. try resetting the settings under "mobile data network"
StonwEd · 24/03/2023 08:14

Christ that was nasty, I've been trying all last night and this morning to work it out, was hoping for a little help. Sadly he's not on the train to work with me.
It was is a light hearted post asking for help, maybe you need to do some breathing this morning?

Wow, so nasty. Go and do some yoga or something.

Feel better for that, do you? What a horrible response. I hope you're not such a cow in real life.

midgemadgemodge · 24/03/2023 08:18

WiFi calling should be on

Is mobile data on?

In mobile data is your network provider listed and set to automatic as above

PeekAtYou · 24/03/2023 08:18

Is the iPhone locked to a different mobile network? What I mean is if the phone was used by a Vodafone customer and you're on EE then it won't work if the previous person paid monthly to Vodafone rather than bought it at at Apple Store not locked to a specific network.

Yeah, that was unnecessarily bitchy!

When I swapped sim provider to iD mobile, I had some difficulties getting messages to other iPhones. I went on the iD mobile community page for solutions since it's bound to have happened to others before me.
Maybe try your sim providers site or their chat service and see if they can talk you through it.
Sorry I can't help you more - I'm at the tech level of turn it off and back on again. Anything more complex goes to Apple Store or the kids to fix

StonwEd · 24/03/2023 08:19

Just walking to the office then will read all the helpful responses 😊

It's on talk mobile and op just needs to go into each of the next level menus for us !

dietcokelime · 24/03/2023 08:20

On that photo it looks like the phone isn't connected to a network at all? In the top corner there's three dots, normally that shows Wi-Fi / signal strength / data strength.

Is the phone connected to a network? When you swipe to show the menu but does it have a display like mine, showing I'm on WI-FI, data is enabled and so is Bluetooth?

I do remember having to go into settings, tap on my name and making sure that my number was registered to the phone, if that helps

Malbecfan · 24/03/2023 08:24

OP when I changed to Talkmobile & put the new SIM in, I couldn't get it to work. I did their online chat help on my laptop and the guy was quick and efficient. It took less than 5 minutes to solve.

My tech savvy teen/early 20s DDs couldn't solve it before I tried the help online. Once I'd sorted mine, I saved the chat & helped the DDs. Oh and I'm considerably over 40

I've spent ten minutes on the chat to them and they came up with nothing than turn it off and on again and take the SIM out.
I don't live anywhere near an apple store but I do have to go to London tomorrow so can get to one I guess. Not what I wanted to be doing!

Thanks all, think apple store is the only way 🙄 will keep googling over the day...

mdh2020 · 24/03/2023 09:21

You don’t need to go to the Apple Store, for which you need an appointment, you can do a live chat online and they will sort it for you, no matter how long it takes.

StonwEd · 24/03/2023 11:59

Nope. 20 minutes on chat with apple, they can't sort it. Said I've got to go to a shop - no one at work could help either. What a mystery

sorrynotathome · 24/03/2023 12:04

Ahhh I’m going to apologise OP as you’re right, it was rude of me! No excuse really but this is such a hot button (ie “older people can’t do tech”). Almost as bad as claiming women can’t do maths or read maps. Sorry.

StonwEd · 24/03/2023 12:29

Well I guess that's the problem with typing online.
I'm female and I'm fierce as fuck, I can do anything but FML even Apple can't resolve this issue let alone 43 year old me.
BTW thanks for the apology, but I don't identify as "older" 😘

Phone issue cannot be fixed. I have done almost no work today trying to sort it.
Gah.

Are you always this much of a bitch or did someone piss in your cornflakes this morning?

If you can get into an Apple store OP they're dead helpful, if a bit over enthusiastic, they should be able to suss it out for you.

tommika · 24/03/2023 12:54

In store they will manage to sort it, but the two things I’m thinking of are:

The network has locked (even though it may be provided as SIM unlocked there can be a ‘feature’ that locks an iPhone to the first network it’s used on)
The store would be able to fix that

But another option is whether or not it has been factory reset.
(Provided that you are content that there is nothing required on the phone) go to:
This will fully wipe and return the phone to factory default settings

Settings, General, Transfer or Reset iPhone, Reset

Return iPhone settings to their defaults

On iPhone, return settings to their defaults without erasing your content.

Ilovetocrochet · 24/03/2023 13:02

This is what my iPhone 11 shows on the same setting as you, the 4g shows at the top right that I am connected to network provider so you could look at the options in the main part that are different to yours.
