Lapsang Souchong Crisis - Twinings Discontinued

It's not a crisis. This is lighthearted. But still. Twinings Lapsang Souchong has been discontinued.

What is the best Lapsong out there?

I like a nuanced, aromatic version, with plenty of natural-tasting smoke. The replacement version launched by Twinings - Distinctively Smoky - is bloody horrible. It's like sucking a school swimming pool through a Centerparcs firelog.

Any Lapsang fans recommend a good one?

I find it reassuring that others feel the same. You're right (pp), it is actually a bloody crisis Grin

I've just read the reviews on the Twinings website about the godawful product I mentioned above - it's almost universally hated. If more people leave reviews, maybe Twinings will u-turn on this?

Anyone remember the Buttermint u-turn? They relaunched it after an outcry. For now, I've ordered some Taylors of Harrogate, so I'll report back on how nice that is.

Thank you for your recommendations and solidarity 💪Grin

Brew Tea, available on line is good albeit quite expensive

Okay, I'm just drinking my first cup of Taylor's of Harrogate Lapsang Souchong, and IT IS GOOD. Not identical, but I'd wager that most lovers of the Twinings version will be happy with this.

Mellow, smoky - probably a touch smokier - and really nice. I'm very happy with this.

I'd go as far as to say that the crisis is averted.

Thank heaven! I was preparing to push the red button.

I've been on a search for the last couple years for a good SMOKEY Lapsang and have gone through a lot of disappointing samples sold by people who obviously have no idea what Lapsang is supposed to smell/taste like. If the emptied cup doesn't smell like a campfire then it's not Lapsang IMO.

The Tea House (Covent Garden/online) does a good lapsang souchong. Loose-leaf. NOT ‘lapsing douching’, despite what this phone seems to think.

I’ll order some for my friend - although he didn’t seem to notice the change in Twinings 🤷‍♀️so maybe he’s not the connoisseur he thinks he is 😂

Twinings make Russian Earl Grey tea, which is far superior to their bog standard version BUT it isn't available in the UK, only on the continent. Twinings of London that is.
I even called in their shop in The Strand which claims to stock all their teas. "No, we don't sell that one" she said in a pained voice.

Evidently serious tea connoisseurs don't live in the UK, not according to Twinings anyway.
