Lapsang Souchong Crisis - Twinings Discontinued

WTFTwinings · 21/03/2023 18:41

It's not a crisis. This is lighthearted. But still. Twinings Lapsang Souchong has been discontinued.

What is the best Lapsong out there?

I like a nuanced, aromatic version, with plenty of natural-tasting smoke. The replacement version launched by Twinings - Distinctively Smoky - is bloody horrible. It's like sucking a school swimming pool through a Centerparcs firelog.

Any Lapsang fans recommend a good one?

This is AWFUL news so I’m following with interest and angst.

CandyLeBonBon · 21/03/2023 18:44

We'll surely this is a good thing as it is a first step to ceasing the heinous colonial practice of tea drinking. No more cultural appropriation op - just think how many virtue points you'll earn!

SiobhanSharpe · 21/03/2023 18:48

Have a look in Whittards? They have a fair selection of teas and they're a chain so with any luck there is one not too far from you.
Also, I've found the staff to be quite knowledgeable, they might be able to recommend something for you.
(They seem to know a bit about coffee, anyway. I'm not a tea connoisseur. I tend to stick with Waitrose Assam😊)

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 21/03/2023 18:49

Noooooo! It’s my favourite tea.😫

Lovetotravel123 · 21/03/2023 19:03

Try the Samovar Tea House online.

exexpat · 21/03/2023 19:05

The Waitrose own brand one is OK.

SezFrankly · 26/03/2023 15:12

It IS a crisis. I buy it for my friend and she thinks I’ve bought the wrong one 🤦‍♀️

FixTheBone · 26/03/2023 15:17

Big fan of Hebden Tea
I go in person rather than online, but very decent imo.

They have 6 or 7 smoky type teas.

unvillage · 26/03/2023 15:56

Bird & Blend's Smoky Russian might suit, it's a blend with lapsang souchong, oolong and black tea. I can't stand it Grin

Kissedbyfire1 · 26/03/2023 16:13

Dunno about Lapsang but they’ve also ruined their decaff Earl Grey. Labelled “great new taste”, it actually tastes of nothing but cheap tannins now. I suspect a cost-cutting exercise is going on behind the scenes. I have complained to them but to no avail.

ChimpyPTT · 26/03/2023 21:53

I have a cup every morning. I don't like "normal" black tea 😭

GrouchyKiwi · 26/03/2023 22:03

We are very sad about this too! And too poor right now to investigate the alternatives.

boatyardblues · 26/03/2023 22:09

I was treated to a caddy of Fortnum and Mason’s lapsang souchong as a gift about 8 years ago and it was decent. I don’t know if it’s gone downhill since.

Dacadactyl · 26/03/2023 22:12

Surely this is good news lol! Any lapsang I've even drank tastes like a cup of rainwater sourced from a 'full o'fagends' pub garden ashtray!

CheeseMcKnees · 26/03/2023 22:14

Now I want some LapDogShoeSnog tea!

CheeseMcKnees · 26/03/2023 22:15

Waitrose sell it, annoying it’s past my cut off time!

user1494050295 · 26/03/2023 22:19

thats rubbish. F and m lapsang us very nice. And you can buy loose or tea bags. Not too expensive

Mirabai · 26/03/2023 22:20

You cannot be fucking serious? How can you say this is not a crisis?! That’s my favourite tea!

It’s Gods way of telling you to drink caffeine.

AdoraBell · 26/03/2023 22:23

You poor thing OP I hope one of the brands mentioned meets your, entirely reasonable, expectations.

Anyone know of a brand that does orange and ginger tea? I used to buy a Twinnings one overseas but they only do lemon and ginger here.

musicmum75 · 26/03/2023 22:24

Another recommendation for Hebden Tea. They are great!

Hahahahaha.
I love Mumsnet sometimes.

FindingMeno · 26/03/2023 23:26

Oh, I love that stuff, but I'm drinking absolutely vile pg tips at the moment.

Ponderoveryonder · 26/03/2023 23:40

Oh this is terrible news! Didn’t it only recently come back on to the shelves post brexit because of eu regs regarding lapsang? The proper Chinese stuff iirc was found to contain dangerous substances banned in the eu? And now there’s a protected name issue so iirc only the genuine Chinese version can use the name .
