Fentimans ginger beer now has Stevia in.

Just that!

Nothing on the bottle to say there has been a change of recipe. It tasted so disgusting that I checked the ingredients list. Steviol (from Stevia) in it. I know it’s not an artificial sweetener but I don’t care. I want changes labelled so I don’t end up ingesting something that tastes of liquorice and gives me headaches and messes with my guts.

I will be so sad if all Fentimans drinks go this way, it’s difficult enough getting fizzy drinks that are only sugar, no sweeteners.

I'm going on holiday to China in a few weeks and will be so happy to be able to drink fizzy drinks that actually taste nice again, there is a type of orange drink that tastes just like fizzy orange from the 90's and plenty of 'real' lemonade 😋

TheNyx · 20/03/2023 20:16

It's actually worth checking out the drinks cabinets in Asian supermarkets here as occasionally they have imports

Camdenish · 20/03/2023 20:19

Yes, I buy my squash from an independent grocers Thenyx. I go for the Asian Vimto.

I just want to be able to drink something tasty at a pub without having alcohol!

Oh right
Am I looking for brands I know or Asian brands? Any recommendations? I miss normal San Pellegrino and I'd love a cream soda.

HelloBunny · 20/03/2023 20:42

Feck sake, I love that stuff. They’re all at it. As previously stated, the only sage option is to go for Coke. Which some places add a sugar charge for. As I’m a big adult baby who shouldn’t be having any sugar...

bigbluebus · 20/03/2023 20:56

It's getting to the point where the only thing I'll be able to drink in the pub, if I'm driving is peppermint tea or water. I'm absolutely sick to death of sweeteners other than sugar. I so rarely drink fizzy drinks that a bit of sugar isn't going to harm me. I'm waiting for the great sweetener scandal of the 2030's when they finally discover the damage this crap has done to those who drink it.

Worldgonecrazy · 20/03/2023 20:56

@TheNyx you have made me nostalgic for Orangina before they messed with the recipe!

TheIsleOfTheLost · 20/03/2023 21:06

Nnnnnnnnnnnoooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!

I bloody hate sweetener. I don't care for them adding no artificial sweetener to the label either, been caught out by that before. Ginger beer was practically the only drink left on the safe list when I go out as I don't drink alcohol. Don't really want coke with a nice meal, so guess it is tap water with judgement from the waiter. I would be happy to pay for a soft drink without sweetener!

@Worldgonecrazy the orangina thing was heartbreaking. Finally managed to get it over here and it tastes of disappointment.

I'm old, I've seen this happen so many times, and I agree.

Eggs were bad, diesel was good, smoking aided weight loss, vaping was a good alternative...

BishopRock · 20/03/2023 21:30

When I'm at the pub I drink Appletiser, and if they don't stock it orange juice and fizzy water.

BishopRock · 20/03/2023 21:32

Appletiser is just carbonated apple. Nothing else.

There's a cheap alternative I came across once, but it contained sugar.

SecretVictoria · 20/03/2023 21:36

FFS 😡. Soda Folk have done the same, just the root beer for now but I’m sure the rest will follow. They all (including Stevia) induce migraines and vomiting. Why is it I can’t buy a bloody full sugar drink but can buy 8 family
packs of Mars bars??

Camdenish · 20/03/2023 21:42

I live in blooming Camden. I can get crack cocaine easier than I can get a full fat fizzy drink.

Oh no! Fentimens ginger beer is my absolute drink of choice.

PriamFarrl · 20/03/2023 21:54

Oh ffs. Why do they do this? I’d pay more.

This! The world has gone mad. It makes no sense

Looks like Soda Folk cream soda has fallen too

This would be funny if it wasn't true.

Can you get Zolpidem? Do I need a trip to Camden? 😂 actually, not joking....

exexpat · 21/03/2023 00:06

The Karma drinks brands of lemonade, ginger beer and so on are all still sweetener-free. I only tend to see them in hipster coffee shops, but it looks like you can get them on Ocado, Amazon and so on.

Drakmo · 21/03/2023 00:17

This is very disappointing.

And pubs not stocking sugary soft drinks is lunacy. Pubs exist in order to sell fermented sugar FFS.

Ponderingwindow · 21/03/2023 00:35

My first experience with sweeteners was when my grandmother gave me a mint candy when I was a young child. I projectile vomited shortly afterwards. The same thing happened the next time I had something with the same ingredient.

I’ve tried every new one that comes out and while there are variations in exact timing and presentation, the results are always the same.

They are triggering migraines.

It makes me really angry when changes like these aren’t clearly labeled. Honestly, it upsets me that companies use artificial sweeteners in products that they do not specifically label as containing artificial sweeteners.

I know stevia isn’t technically an artificial sweetener, but there is something really wrong with it. It triggers the same kind of reactions as artificial sweeteners.

tatteddear · 21/03/2023 01:36

This really does piss me off. What are you meant to have when hung over? I need something with sugar. My go to was old Jamaica ginger beer. It now tastes rank and does me no good as a curative at all! (I don't need it that often nb but when I do I really do Grin)

Snoopsnoggysnog · 21/03/2023 03:01

Camdenish · 20/03/2023 18:41

Lemonade always has artificial sweeteners it it, apart from the Fentimans one. If that goes what am I supposed to have with my Pimms?

It’s for this reason I have stopped drinking Pimms.

Tonic is the same, I don’t want slimline crap! Like your other post I can only drink fever tree!
