Best beach near south Cotswolds

chickenchowmeinsss · 18/03/2023 20:22

We're currently staying in south Cotswolds and want to head out to a nice beach tomorrow no more than 3 hours drive (prefers two).

Looking for a nice sandy beach, near a nice town / area.

From the cotswolds you can get yourself to Devon in 3hrs. We do have a man made beach in South Cerney though!

Smarshian · 18/03/2023 20:24

Boscombe (Bournemouth)

isthewashingdryyet · 18/03/2023 20:27

Why ?

just go to Bourton on the Water for a nice day out

i am assuming you are there on a holiday/short break

2 or 3 hours each way?

chickenchowmeinsss · 18/03/2023 20:35

Yes we're here on holiday but DH wants a trip out to the beach! 2 or 3 hours each way yes.

I’d probably say Bournemouth too, or at a push West Wittering near Chichester (you have to book parking in summer but not sure at this time of year). But they are both a considerable distance. I’d be looking at what the Cotswold Water park has to offer.

EspeciallyDedicated · 18/03/2023 20:38

I reckon you could do West Wittering from Cirencester in about 2.5 hours, then Chichester is nice to wander round nearby. But the traffic does get busy on nice days.

vintagechick43 · 18/03/2023 20:38

Dawlish

EspeciallyDedicated · 18/03/2023 20:39

Having said that if you want a nice town to wander round Cirencester scores pretty highly for me

Wherethewildthymeblows · 18/03/2023 20:40

Head into Wales. The Gower peninsula is lovely and within a 2 hour drive.

chickenchowmeinsss · 18/03/2023 21:27

Thanks everyone!

Wales definitely for convenience. Kilve is doable, North Somerset and if you go tomorrow you will find the swimming good.

Devon is a bit of a journey really unless you are going at dawn.

SummerSazz · 18/03/2023 21:52

Brean sands is closest

MrsMoastyToasty · 18/03/2023 22:33

Weston-super-Mare is closest but the tide goes out for miles and leaves dangerous mud flats. The pier is a typical British pier but the town is a bit depressing.

kerstina · 18/03/2023 22:37

How about Watchet or Burnham on Sea . Or Clevedon ?

Muchtoomuchtodo · 18/03/2023 22:41

Gower is at least an hour and a half from Cardiff no way you’d do it it that time from the Cotswolds.

Barry island maybe? It might not have the best reputation but the beach is amazing (check the tide times though)

MrsMoastyToasty · 18/03/2023 23:03

Not much at Clevedon. The "beach" is just rocks and Severn estuary mud.
If you're not far from Bath I would say Swanage, Poole or Weymouth. It's about an hour and 45 minutes to the south coast.

KnickerlessParsons · 18/03/2023 23:11

Western, Penarth, Swansea/Gower.

But as others have said, there's a
Lake with a beach in South Cerney.

redspottedmug · 18/03/2023 23:16

Swanage or Weymouth

Quornflakegirl · 18/03/2023 23:19

We can get to Bude in 3 hours on a good day from Cheltenham. Worth it if you leave early.

CryptoQueen · 18/03/2023 23:26

Dorset? Ciren to Lyme Regis is 2 1/4 hours.

CryptoQueen · 18/03/2023 23:29

Remember to check the Surfers Against Sewage map SAS

clopper · 18/03/2023 23:34

Weymouth is lovely

Enthrallingstoryofstillnessandlight · 18/03/2023 23:35

I must say if I was staying in the Cotswolds, thinking about a trip to the beach wouldn't be overly top of my list

TalliskerMcSpeculate · 18/03/2023 23:38

The Cotswolds isn't a beach holiday. That's like going to the Brecon Beacons and trying to find a nightclub
