I’m getting my nose pierced today!

I’m a 33 year old married mother of two living in the Home Counties and I work in the City 😂

I’ve wanted my nose pierced since forever, but there’s always been a reason it wouldn’t be acceptable - mostly because of the workplace but also I wasn’t sure if I could pull it off. But since Covid, dress codes at work have relaxed (plus, while I’m in professional services, I’m marketing, which can be a little less formal). And after having 2 kids I’m just a bit ‘well, if not now, when?’ about life 😄

Feeling rather nervous/excited/concerned I’ll look like an idiot afterwards (I can always take it out after, right?)

Tell me that I can survive the pain if I’ve gone through childbirth twice!! The last piercing I had was my ear cartilage at 17 in Claire’s Accessories when I was a bit tipsy

Also any tips for aftercare v welcome!

Ooh, good luck. Had mine done a few years ago to celebrate my divorce! Not bad pain-wise (made my eyes water a bit but no biggie), and it healed really well and far quicker than some ear ones I have. Basically get it done and then leave it well alone for a few months. Take care not to knock it when doing your face, or with a towel or whatever.

HoleyShit · 17/03/2023 10:00

I had mine done a few months ago (early 40's!)
Had also wanted it done for ages but kept making excuses as was worried about the pain as I have a bit of a phobia of anything being done to my nose!
Anyway it was fine, yes a momentary bit of pain but nothing to write home about.

You will be fine!

HoleyShit · 17/03/2023 10:02

I'm should say, don't let anyone go near you with a gun, it must be a needle.

Find a good reputable place with good reviews.

Make sure you get your piercing done with a needle and by a professional. Absolutely don't get it done in Claires or with a gun.

Don't worry about the age thing because it's a nonsense. I had my nose pierced when I was 16 (1986 if you care to know) and still have it now my 52.

ShadowPuppets · 17/03/2023 10:04

Oh absolutely a needle. Have it all booked with a reputable local woman who had a month long waiting list and strict criteria so feel like I’m making much better choices than my 17 year old self!

Ooh, ok, I can deal with 'eye watering' levels! Yes, going to be very careful with my face for a while - glad it healed quickly for you, hopefully mine will too... I don't have anything major coming up for the next few months (holidays etc) so figured now was a good time to do it.

I also did this, aged 31. Go for it!!

ShadowPuppets · 17/03/2023 10:11

@HoleyShit @EraOfTheGrey Thank you for reassuring me that they're not just the preserve of teenagers! Daft really, my sister had hers done in her teens and still has it in in her early 30s so I know I'm by no means too old to have one, just feels a bit mad to be getting pierced at this age - the piercer's Instagram page is full of ethereal teenagers/20 somethings and between sleep deprivation and work I feel I'm edging closer to 'undead' 😄

Have told myself if I don't wimp out about this it might be time to look into a long-desired tattoo as well... (I know I'm definitely not too old for that, MIL had her first to celebrate her 60th birthday)

My eyes were streaming too, all my makeup ran down my face - I looked a right state Grin

Mine told me I couldn't get in a swimming pool for at least 8 weeks. But yeah agree with other poster, you have to pretty much leave it alone and not be tempted to fiddle. I've caught mine a few times by accident, forgetting that it was there!

Ah excellent! Yep - suspect I might have started the thread to stop myself wimping out (also don't want to lose my deposit with the piercer so there's that too...)

I had mine done in my early 40s. It didn’t hurt, no worse than ears. I’d happily have it done again

HoleyShit · 17/03/2023 10:16

Honestly you will be fine - I'd worked myself up and convinced myself it was going to be horrific (I also have several other piercings and tattoos) and it really was fine. I felt quite stupid after for worrying so much!

Mabelface · 17/03/2023 10:19

I'm 53, had mine done for my 50th from my kids. I love it and definitely not too old (who decides what too old is anyway?)

It's a very quick pinch on the nose. Clean with saline twice a day and if it swells, also hold a hot, wet chamomile teabag against it for a few minutes twice a day. Otherwise, just leave it the fuck alone.

Advise a tragus fitted stud rather than pigtail as far less likely to be pulled out accidentally. Pigtails are a bastard to get back in whilst still healing.

Boleynforsoup · 17/03/2023 10:20

I had mine re-pierced post divorce at 38. I also had my septum re-pierced (had it done for a couple of years in my 20s) two years ago at 42.

I would argue that everyone looks cooler with a nose piercing!

ThisIsntDanicaBritannica · 17/03/2023 10:22

I've had my nose pierced since I was 17 and I had my septum done last year at the age of45. I love it and I wish I'd had it done years ago! Go for it!

Vicliz24 · 17/03/2023 10:26

I've had my nose pierced over 30 years . I only wear a tiny tiny stud these days but I'm pushing 60 and I still love it .

PollyDarton1 · 17/03/2023 10:26

I had my nose pierced when I was 32 for my birthday. Eyes watered, but apart from that it was seamless healing. My then 2 year old tugged a few times but never since. It does sometimes get caught in a towel or clothing!

Would love to get my septum pierced but I'm a bit afraid of the pain of that!

Ooh that's a great tip, thank you - I need to decide on jewelry when I get there, had been erring towards stud but that's made my mind up, thank you! Also hadn't heard the chamomile advice before, thanks :)

I'd be inclined to agree but there's always the nagging worry that you'll be the exception that proves the rule! I've spent a lot of the last few days wandering around the house with a dob of eyeliner on my nostril to see what it would look like (much to husband's amusement)...

Campervangirl · 17/03/2023 10:29

Had mine done over 20 years ago with a gun, it didn't go all the way through, the piercer offered to manually push the stud the rest of the way through, no chance, I went into a restaurant for lunch and popped in the loo and pushed it through 😂
I love my piercing, I love buying new studs, I very rarely catch it.
If you buy a stud with a gem make sure you buy a claw setting, if the gems are just glued on the heat, oils, make up etc on your face ruins the glue so the gem needs to be fastened in.
Good luck, it's not that bad and it's going to look lovely 🌹

Handsnotwands · 17/03/2023 10:32

the actual piercing will be fine, it's over quickly. i found the healing much harder (this is true of all my cartilage piercings). it's easy to accidentally catch them and i knocked my nose one out a couple of times and it was hell getting it back in. i might advise getting and L shaped stud in case this happens, i was pierced with a corkscrew one and there was no way i was getting that baby back in

FunkyMonks · 17/03/2023 10:33

Go for it at 36 I've got my septum pierced had it done last year and recently had my conch pierced helix re done and a rook piercing never too old love piercings specially with the lovely jewellery you can now get.
Oddly I'm not one for jewellery but with my piercings I've seen some lovely gold jewellery with gems.

Aerish · 17/03/2023 10:41

I had my septum pierced before Christmas and I'm 49, I had wanted it done for years so woke up one morning and just did it. I'm sure your nose piercing will look lovely

skywalkersweetie · 17/03/2023 10:45

Tea tree oil will be your friend to get rid of any bump!

HalliwellManor · 17/03/2023 11:02

I'm 46 and I pierced my own nose 2 year ago,I used one of those disposable nose piercers from Shein for 99p 😆.
It didn't hurt but it took me aaaggeeesss to work up the courage to do it and it's always been fine ever since.Just keep it clean and dry and you'll be fine
