Why don't you drink?!

PontypandyPioneer · 16/03/2023 16:48

What do you say if someone asks why don't you drink alcohol?

There's no particular reason I don't drink, I don't want a hangover (have two young sons), the cost of getting a taxi to and from home and I never sleep well after a drink. So I'm usually at a loss at what to say other than I just don't want it, but it seems this isn't a good enough answer for most people! My husband doesn't drink either so it's not like it's because I'd have to drive.

I'm usually hit with a puzzled look and people saying "can I not even tempt you with one?"

Sometimes I feel like saying back "why do you drink alcohol?" but feel like I'd come across rude and defensive haha.

Any good responses?

Btw, I used to drink when I was younger and it just got less and less over the years until now I just never fancy one.

I stopped drinking when I quit smoking because it made me crave a cigarette. I found I really didn’t miss it. I still miss smoking.

SwimmingAgainstTheTides · 16/03/2023 19:12

I just say it does nothing for me, which is true.
I' d rather spend the money on my hobbies, plus I'm 54 and still slim, healthy, never been on a diet.

Cherryblossom1985 · 16/03/2023 19:23

I have been asked, "Why don't you drink? What's wrong with you"? I answered, "Because I don't need drink to be able to enjoy myself ". Which is true.
The real reason is because I grew up with two alcoholic parents and my childhood was sh1t.

I find this really hard. I'm honest now and say that once I start I can't stop.

I don't need to anymore, not that now that I have our Lord Jesus

Is a better answer than I'm too old and alcohol doesn't like me anymore!

Haha this is literally why I don't drink anymore. I was going to say 'me too!' then realised you were joking 😄 🤣 😂

SprinkleRainbow · 16/03/2023 19:44

Can't stand the taste, makes me go pale white like a ghost (except my nose goes red!) And I much prefer to drive everywhere so I can leave whenever it suits me! Much rather go for dinner with the money 🤣

Rockbird · 16/03/2023 19:48

Hate the taste of alcohol, love Diet Coke. It's a no brainer.

I have been known to say I can't drink because it plays havoc with my heroin habit.

But normally I shrug and say I just don't like it any more and/or I get terrible headaches and dizziness when I drink (not entirely untrue.)

In a serious note, and my facetiousness over the heroin remark, I think it's very rude to ask. No one wants to disclose a pregnancy when they choose not to yet, and if you do have a problem with alcohol, people can be judgy fucks so who would want to say they're an alcoholic?

I do this too

I'm also tee total and usually reply with

"I'm on that much heroin that I think I'd puke if I touched a drop "

I've never touched heroin 🤭

Bananalanacake · 16/03/2023 19:50

I Say, I do drink but not every day, which is the truth.

Longingforthesummer · 16/03/2023 19:53

Looking after an elderly relative
Dont like the headache the next morning

PrawnofthePatriarchy · 16/03/2023 19:56

I say it's because I'm a sober alcoholic. Which I am.

StewPots · 16/03/2023 19:58

I’ve been pretty much teetotal for the last 5 years. I’m on a LOT of medication for various illnesses so conscious of my liver etc plus not a good mix!

I did enjoy the odd night of drinking now and again, especially in summer, but I’m on a very specific antipsychotic drug now for cyclothymia. And that’s totally turned me against the taste and thought of alcohol for good.

I don’t even have a Baileys hot chocolate anymore which makes me kinda sad as I liked those occasionally especially in winter - but I have a Velvitiser so I get lots of different flavours for that and enjoy those instead!

I have Emetophobia and feel sick after a couple of drinks. As soon as I say that people sympathise instantly.

Even when I was young out clubbing people got it.

same! I can remember being 18 and seeing friends being sick and it’s so scary to me I never got into drinking. People do find me weird (they’ve said!) but I don’t care!

BillyNoM8s · 16/03/2023 20:00

Because I'm pregnant Smile (I'm not).

The guy turned water into wine. If anything it's respectful to him for you to drink Grin

blackheartsgirl · 16/03/2023 20:05

Yep I’m another one who has had family members destroy themselves with drink, my brother luckily has been sober and dry for 11 years and has turned his life around but that was after it wrecked his marriage, health and mental health.

I do drink but I choose when and it’s very little these days, I’m on strong meds that interact with alchohol anyway.

hate it when people pass comment when I don’t drink, I had a so called friend who likes her booze invite me to the pub once and I was driving anyway so said not drinking. Her reply was oh aren’t you boring, what’s the point in coming out if you’re not going to drink.

silly cow

Ladyofthesea · 16/03/2023 20:06

I tend to answer that I got out of the habit when ttc/pregnant/breastfeeding which in total was a stretch of 9 years (fertility problems). That's when I realised that I had more energy the next day without.

Beesandhoney123 · 16/03/2023 20:12

I was once told I didn't know how to have fun because I didn't want a drink.

No one asks nowadays I find.

if pressed, I just sat no thx not today, got to be up early and I won't enjoy my day with a headache etc. Which sets me up to leave very soon as can pretend need to get up early and avoid very drunk people.

Ps I am fun, just not a drinker. My dh and I have never seen each other drunk.

parrotonthesofa · 16/03/2023 20:26

It's strange because I don't find that people care whether I drink or not.

It was definitely a thing when we were young but now we're in our forties no one cares or bats an eyelid at who is drinking or not.

It doesn't agree with me anymore so I just don't drink. Anyone I tell this to is just like ´ok.' And then we talk about something else.

JellyBabiesSaveLives · 16/03/2023 20:31

Because that's time when I could be having a nice cup of tea. With biscuits.

Peonies84 · 16/03/2023 20:39

I stopped because I couldn't tolerate it. I would flush, get numb limbs and bad headache. Turns out I have a heart problem. When much younger everyone in my circle drank, I couldn't handle it and eventually started to blame medication (lies). These days I don't go out and therefore don't have to justify myself to anyone, which I know sounds sad but I'm happy that way.

tickletimmy · 16/03/2023 20:45

Because it gives me insomnia and I just don't like it as much as I used to. I think it's quite sad that to have a 'good night out' - alcohol must be consumed. I worked with a girl who drank a bottle of wine EVERY night plus more at the weekend. Apparently she doesn't have a drink problem 🤷‍♀️

xPissflapsx · 16/03/2023 20:47

Because alcohol turns you into a raving nymph and your husband can't cope with you trying to dry hump everyone.

Alcohol is like garlic to a vampire. It will kill you.

Alcohol makes your clothes fall off.

Just say "we don't talk about Bruno"

Tell them you are offended (whilst clutching a pearl necklace)

Tell them your little leprechaun will be pissed off

Say "your mom"

Tell them the power of Christ compels you

eatdrinkandbemerry · 16/03/2023 20:49

I'm allergic 🤷‍♀️
Makes me quite ill ( even a sip)

LtMoose · 16/03/2023 20:53

I just say It doesn't agree with me
