Help! - there’s a screw in my dinner!

I spent the afternoon making a home made aubergine Ragu. Sat down for dinner tonight and my husband found a screw in his. Mortified! I did the Ragu and DH cooked the pasta & plated but had mixed his all up (I keep my sauce and carb separate). Neither of us noticed anything odd when making or plating.

Thing is - we can’t find where it’s come from!! I’ve looked in various places in the kitchen (cupboard fittings, pots and pans handles etc, inside the oven) but none of the screws I can see in our kitchen match the one DH found. I feel sick at the thought of it. But also so frustrated as I was batch cooking!! We went through all of the sauce that was served up and didn’t find another screw. The rest of it is in the freezer still - can’t face it yet.

Where could it have come from??

The most simple answer is that it’s from our own kitchen but I did used canned tomatoes and lentils so thinking one of the cans could have been contaminated!?

Any suggestions??

Think about it. You checked your saucepans to see if any screws had fallen out - you wouldn't be freaking out if the sauce had come into contact with a screw in your saucepan. If it was thoroughly cooked, a random screw won't contaminate it.

No suggestions but reminds of the time my mum found a screw in the homemade cottage pie. Immediately assumed it was from the mince And left the dinner table to tear the butcher off a strip. The shop was opposite. Only to find when washing up the saucepan later that the handle came off the lid. She never owned up and we always got a discount at the butchers!

The main risk in this was to your teeth if you'd bitten down on it - you've avoided that one, so relax.

I had some sainsburys olive ciabatta the other day that had a stone in, but at least they put a disclaimer on, and no broken tooth luckily

That is hilarious!! Damn - wish I’d added meat now so I could blame the butcher and get a life time discount 😂

What does the screw look like ? Wood screw ? Electrical screw? May not be from your kitchen at all

You’re assuming I know about the different types of screw! I just know my husband had one and I did not! 😂

@hedgehoglurker @SageRosemary We don’t have a cooker hood. The extractor fan is else where in the kitchen but also very new and this screw was not new 🤢

Meaning possibly a manufacturing screw, did you use anything prepped in a factory, tomatoes tinned for example

Did you use an airfyer I had to return my airfryer after the screws melted lose and were in our dinner

Not got much to add about the screw but I'd love your recipe for aubergine ragu! Sounds delish. (Preferable sans extra metal though...)
