Help! - there’s a screw in my dinner!

I spent the afternoon making a home made aubergine Ragu. Sat down for dinner tonight and my husband found a screw in his. Mortified! I did the Ragu and DH cooked the pasta & plated but had mixed his all up (I keep my sauce and carb separate). Neither of us noticed anything odd when making or plating.

Thing is - we can’t find where it’s come from!! I’ve looked in various places in the kitchen (cupboard fittings, pots and pans handles etc, inside the oven) but none of the screws I can see in our kitchen match the one DH found. I feel sick at the thought of it. But also so frustrated as I was batch cooking!! We went through all of the sauce that was served up and didn’t find another screw. The rest of it is in the freezer still - can’t face it yet.

Where could it have come from??

The most simple answer is that it’s from our own kitchen but I did used canned tomatoes and lentils so thinking one of the cans could have been contaminated!?

Any suggestions??

Don't tell everyone or they'll all want one?

SillyBub · 15/03/2023 18:57

Could it have come from the pepper or salt mill?

PlateBilledDuckyPerson · 15/03/2023 18:59

Think about it. You checked your saucepans to see if any screws had fallen out - you wouldn't be freaking out if the sauce had come into contact with a screw in your saucepan. If it was thoroughly cooked, a random screw won't contaminate it.

What does your DH do for work? I find screws fucking everywhere, not had one in my dinner yet though Grin

No suggestions but reminds of the time my mum found a screw in the homemade cottage pie. Immediately assumed it was from the mince And left the dinner table to tear the butcher off a strip. The shop was opposite. Only to find when washing up the saucepan later that the handle came off the lid. She never owned up and we always got a discount at the butchers!

There's a screw in my dinner, dear Liza, dear Liza ...

The main risk in this was to your teeth if you'd bitten down on it - you've avoided that one, so relax.

I initially read the title as shrew.

Which would be worse.

heldinadream · 15/03/2023 19:04

Well given aubergines are symbolic of dicks it's not surprising is it? 😂

I don't know - I have heard good things about shrew ice cream 😏

From the salt or pepper mill is a good shout

hedgehoglurker · 15/03/2023 19:26

The extractor above hob?

SageRosemary · 15/03/2023 19:28

Did you check your cooker hood?

bussteward · 15/03/2023 19:28

Were you making a variation on nail soup

TwoMonthsOff · 15/03/2023 19:30

That’s awful and a very hefty dentist bill potentially
I had some sainsburys olive ciabatta the other day that had a stone in, but at least they put a disclaimer on, and no broken tooth luckily

That is hilarious!! Damn - wish I’d added meat now so I could blame the butcher and get a life time discount 😂

Yeah I avoided it as it was in the husbands portion 😂

What does the screw look like ? Wood screw ? Electrical screw? May not be from your kitchen at all

You’re assuming I know about the different types of screw! I just know my husband had one and I did not! 😂

@hedgehoglurker @SageRosemary We don’t have a cooker hood. The extractor fan is else where in the kitchen but also very new and this screw was not new 🤢

Meaning possibly a manufacturing screw, did you use anything prepped in a factory, tomatoes tinned for example

Tesoroxx · 15/03/2023 19:37

Did you use an airfyer I had to return my airfryer after the screws melted lose and were in our dinner

xprincessxjanetx · 15/03/2023 19:40

My first thought would be off of a machine in the canning factory

TroysMammy · 15/03/2023 19:40

Have you checked cupboard door hinges and handles?

xprincessxjanetx · 15/03/2023 19:41

Or possibly somewhere inside your oven?

Paperdove87 · 15/03/2023 19:41

Not got much to add about the screw but I'd love your recipe for aubergine ragu! Sounds delish. (Preferable sans extra metal though...)
