Help! - there’s a screw in my dinner!

I spent the afternoon making a home made aubergine Ragu. Sat down for dinner tonight and my husband found a screw in his. Mortified! I did the Ragu and DH cooked the pasta & plated but had mixed his all up (I keep my sauce and carb separate). Neither of us noticed anything odd when making or plating.

Thing is - we can’t find where it’s come from!! I’ve looked in various places in the kitchen (cupboard fittings, pots and pans handles etc, inside the oven) but none of the screws I can see in our kitchen match the one DH found. I feel sick at the thought of it. But also so frustrated as I was batch cooking!! We went through all of the sauce that was served up and didn’t find another screw. The rest of it is in the freezer still - can’t face it yet.

Where could it have come from??

The most simple answer is that it’s from our own kitchen but I did used canned tomatoes and lentils so thinking one of the cans could have been contaminated!?

Any suggestions??

Is the pan cupboard below a drawer? It could be a screw that was shoved in the drawer for ages and has been pushed back over time and finally fallen out the back of the drawer into the cupboard.

I think it must have been in the tomatoes.

Or it fell out of your husband's head as he lent over his portion? Does he have a screw loose?

VanityKase · 15/03/2023 19:47

Here’s the offending item for all the screw sleuths out there! Stamps for size reference.

Not from the oven or hinges of cupboards / draws - they were the first thing I checked. Not salt or pepper mill.

I used tinned tomatoes and lentils. Packet pasta too but I do suspect it was the canned items. That was my first suspicion even before looking in the kitchen.

IIII PUT THE SCREW IN THE TUNA!!
Have you got a picture of it? Was it a large one or tiny one?

VanityKase · 15/03/2023 19:54

@Paperdove87 especially for you! Can’t take credit though - saw it on Instagram 🤷‍♀️

See pic for ingredients (except I ended up using 2 cans of tomatoes -800g)

Method

  1. Place the aubergines whole in the oven to cook for 1hr
  2. Sauté onions and garlic in the oil until translucent.
  3. Add paprika & maple syrup, stir, then add the canned goods.
  4. Take the skin off the cooked aubergine and break up the flesh with a fork. Stir in through the tomato lentil mix.

Best served with pasta or gnocchi but definitely NOT screws!

Yeah it's definitely not out of a small appliance, is it!

It does look more like a machinery screw

I found a NUT in my Jordan’s cereal once I mean a metal nut not a nut nut , complained and they didn’t believe me - it was a machinery screw, it’s not trivial can cause a massive trauma to a tooth which is painful and very expensive

xprincessxjanetx · 15/03/2023 20:02

My husband is an engineer specifically in screws and says that looks like a coarse screw and is primarily used in machinery...so looks like it got in the canned tomatoes/lentils from the factory!

Paperdove87 · 15/03/2023 20:25

@VanityKase thank you that looks so tasty love aubergines. Good luck solving the mystery...

VanityKase · 15/03/2023 20:34

@xprincessxjanetx wow thank you & your DH! Confirms my suspicions.

I think we’ll say mystery solved and chalk it up to the canned goods.

Thanks for all the help (and laughs!!) MNers!!

What does the screw look like ? Wood screw ? Electrical screw? May not be from your kitchen at all

Grub screw?

SgtCatherineCawood · 15/03/2023 20:40

Don't know about the screw but you need to use those stamps by end of July 🤣🤣🤣
