When you were at school were you obsessed with anyone famous?

& if so what did you do about it?

I saw an actor today on TV who I'd not thought of in ages. He's old now but when I was at school my best friend was OBSESSED with this actor. One year he had a rep part in a local theatre and she "made" (!!) me basically stalk him. Almost every Saturday she wanted to go and hang round the theatre before and after the matinee. I saw that show more times than it was worth.

She read every interview she could find and then if he said he liked a sandwich bar in a particular city she'd want to go there too.

This was pre-internet and it made me wonder whether this sort of thing is less common now because of the internet and social media that people have more perceived "access" to the object of their affection. Why go and hang round a theatre if you might have a chance of chatting to them on Instagram or Twitter without leaving your house?

If you were at school pre-internet did you do any of this kind of thing or drag your very lovely friends into your madness?

[PS: this friend of mine died when she was 30 so I'm sad I can't tell her I saw this guy on TV today looking old and crusty]

Lee Sharpe - my mum took me to Liverpool for the weekend to watch Man U play at Everton. We queued at the front of the barriers to see the team arrive and I was within touching distance of him. They lost but he did score. Looking at a picture of him can still make my toes curl. When he was on that celebrity island thing years ago I stopped watching after the first episode as I thought it would kill the fantasy.

Keanu Reeves. It was around his Bill & Ted era and I'd read that he lived near the Hollywood sign in LA, so my plan was to move there when I left school so I could 'accidentally' bump into him, whence he'd ask me to marry him.

Weirdly, none of the above happened. I also lived in the north of England, so I was too far away from any of the other pop/film stars I fancied to hang around their houses as they all seemed to live in London.

I was obsessed with my English teacher, which was in many ways worse than being obsessed with someone famous! I did see him out for dinner with his wife in my hometown a few years ago, and wondered what I'd ever seen in him!

Lorrymum · 14/03/2023 20:09

Richard Harris! I saw him in the film Cromwell on a school trip. Fell for him totally even though he was older than my Dad.

Jeremy Sumpter from Peter pan and whichever one of the s club juniors was the lead in the puppy love music video 😂 teenage me had terrible taste. I covered my homework diary and jotter in pictures of them and had some cringe email address like xcxmrsjsumpter or similar, lots of posters and a geocities fansite.

I really fancied Lionel Blair as a child. Even now I get a small bottom drawer shiver when I see him

Pre-internet-in-my-house (2001) I was obsessed with Alan Rickman. Weirdest thing I did - I used to religiously read the film listings in the paper to see if any of his films were on. We never had Sky so I couldn’t even watch the films if they were on a channel that wasn’t 1-5. I just loved seeing the names of his films in print.

I liked a singer/band. I didn’t do anything weird, just went to their concerts and had their posters on my wall. I did meet them years later through friends of friends.

I did have a friend at school who was a football fan and used to hang around the teams football ground and training sessions. One of the players asked her to meet him and took her out. She was only 15, he was early 20s, and I now realise what happened was grooming and totally inappropriate. He’s married with kids now but I wonder how many young girls he did this too.
